Gwen Stefani – What You Waiting For? Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
to verucasalt:
Obviously, she used the same lyric ("born to blossom, bloom to perish") self-referentially, since it fits with the lyrics preceding it that are talking about her performing the same old material over and over. DUH.
to jessthink:
You don't seem to understand that this song is satire. She is observing her situation in an ironic way. None of that "Gimme lots of brand new fans" is said in a serious way, -obviously-. It is tongue-in-cheek to the max. No one thinks that being Asian is a trend. Jesus. How can an ethnicity possibly be trendy? Don't act dumb. |

Eels – Novocaine For The Soul Lyrics
|
Sara, just because it contains the words "hole" and "hard" does not mean it's meant to be taken in a sexual way. To interpret this song as something sexual makes the rest of the lyrics make no sense. He's obviously talking about the dreary life he leads, and when he says "you better get me something to fill the hole", he's saying he needs something meaningful in his life that he can enjoy/care about, not that he needs a dick up his ass. |

Duran Duran – Notorious Lyrics

I hate you fucking Donnie Darko fanboys. You've beaten the Boondock Saints fans in annoyance level. Congrats, shit-asses.
That said, this song is great to dance to, as maria pointed out. So is most of Rio, one of the greatest albums to come out of the '80s. As for the meaning of the song, I think it seems to be describing those who are corrupt, greedy, etc. Since it is called "Notorious", it may be referring to the lies, greed, tricks and bad-mouthing that comes with fame. |

Ben Folds Five – Magic Lyrics

|
This song reminds me of my grandmother who died very young after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for 10 years.
"we could see that you weren't yourself
and the lines on your face did tell
it's just as well
you'd never be yourself again" |

The White Stripes – I Think I Smell A Rat Lyrics
| 22 years ago
|
The message of this song is simply put, which makes all the more powerful, in my opinion. Tool, I don't know why you think that is what the song is about. The song is talking about adolescents who grow up in medium-to-high-income families that act like delinquents. I know people who are like this, and they're irritating as hell. I always think of this song when I'm around them. |

Fiona Apple – I Know Lyrics
|
"So be it, I'm your crowbar"
She is this man's support and love, even though he is still with another woman. Until he ends it with her, she is forced to keep her love for him a secret. She is patient with him, and she believes that he loves her even though he's never said it to her (probably out of guilt). You can tell from the lyrics that she isn't very happy with her situation, but she sticks to it and compromises because she is in love with this man. It certainly is a sad love song if ever there were one. |

I think this songs comments on the fear that is laced into our world today. He makes them personal and lovely, and I know we can all relate to how he feels. |

You should like the damn song, HappyWaffle, after all, this is New Order we're talking about, not Good Charlotte. |

Kenna – Hell Bent Lyrics

The song and the video do fit remarkably well together. The video is beautiful, sad, and true, and it seems that "Hell Bent" magnifies the desperation that the video portrays. |

AFI – Half-Empty Bottle Lyrics

aws: Perhaps it's alluding to the "half-empty or half-full" question. In this case, it gives a negative connotation to the song. |

Aimee Mann – Guys Like Me Lyrics

I think this song describes people who are emotionally reserved and are intent on being completely individual, forgetting about the importance of humane impassion. They become lonely and isolated because of this. |

Pavement – Give It a Day Lyrics
|
I love this song, and the lyrics are some of the best I've seen. At least part of the song is referring to organized religion in the U.S., but I'm still not sure about the "I hope you profited from this bulletin..." verse. |

Azure Ray – For No One Lyrics

Any ideas on the meaning of the song? It seems to me that the subject is questioning their purpose of being alive. I'm still not sure of that, though. |

The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics

I wonder if Radiohead were at all inspired by the Stone Roses, because songs like "Fools Gold" remind me of "I Might Be Wrong" and many OK Computer tracks. |

Don Henley – The Boys of Summer Lyrics
|
Ferthuko and liverdude are both right. This song is a melancholy look back at the narrator's past. The usage of summer as a metaphor for the carefree days of youth is perfect. This is a great song to listen to in the summer, since the guitar really gives off the feeling of summer (appropriately), but you can listen to it anytime and still feel the meaning of the song strongly. I've always loved this song and, while the Ataris did a nice take on it, you can't beat the original. |

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics
|
I think Tracy Chapman's original version is better than Xiu Xiu's cover, but their cover is still very good. You can't beat the writer of the song, though. This is truly an amazing song. I and many others can relate with the subject matter. It's a very sad song. The line that gets me the most is, "I had a feelin' that I could be someone". |

Dashboard Confessional – For You To Notice Lyrics

I don't hate Dashboard Confessional, because he does have some non-whiny songs like this one, that I genuinely like. He should write more songs like this. He uses his voice well on this song, unlike some other songs of his. |

Death Cab for Cutie – For What Reason Lyrics
| 22 years ago
|
This is a great song. The bitterness in the lyrics and the drums and bass flow together perfectly. I love The Postal Service, mnichols. "Such Great Heights" is a stellar song.
x awful eifel x: The song's lyrics are pretty obviously about a relationship that left the narrator hurt and full of disdain for his ex. The girl may have possibly cheated on him, since the narrator mentions a "he". |

Fuck Vanilla Ice, he was undeserving of using such a cool melody track. His "Under Pressure" sample is the only good part of "Ice Ice Baby" |

David Bowie – Fashion Lyrics

Why the hell hasn't anyone commented on this? Well, let me be the first to say that this song kicks ass. I'm not sure what this song is about, but I view it as a critique on superficiality. |

"Ashes to Ashes" is a beautiful and haunting song reminiscing on Bowie's past battles with drug abuse. Love it! |

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics

Also, why are there extra lyrics on here? Are they from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack? Were these originally in the song, or were they added on for Moulin Rouge? If they were added on for Moulin Rouge, then this doesn't belong on here. |

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics

This is what all the emo singers are copying off of when they try to sing all emotional/screamy. Bowie kicks their ass at it, obviously. |

Tori Amos – '97 Bonnie and Clyde (Eminem cover) Lyrics

Tori did a great creepy as hell version of this already creepy song. I do think that Eminem can be a lyrical genius when he wants to be, and this song is a great example of his talent. It's probably one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time. |

Azure Ray – 4th of July Lyrics
|
It reminds me of Mazzy Star the way that this song is sung all dreamlike. I absolutely love it.
As far as the meaning, it's obvious that it's about a relationship where the speaker of the song fell in love with this person. The lines "When you told me my surprise I looked and asked you, 'Why did you tell me now'?" could mean that he told her that he wanted to end the relationship. So the last lines of the song are talking about the relationship in retrospect and saying that she will always look back on it positively and always care for him. |

Rage Against the Machine – Sleep Now In The Fire Lyrics
| 22 years ago
|
linkinparkdeftones:
It's referring to the lines preceding it, "the world is my expense, the cost of my desire". It's saying that "Jesus blessed me to lead the world into it's future, and I'll protect the world with fire (that could be capitalism, greed, etc.)."
I think it may be referring to how our government has many very religious people running it, and they believe that many of the diplomatic/corporate decisions that are made coincide with their religious beliefs. They believe they are always doing the right thing, sort of. |
