The Clash – Straight to Hell Lyrics

"Paper Plane" writing credits: Arulpragasam, Mathangi; Headon, Topper; Jones, Mick; Pentz, Thomas Wesley; Simonon, Paul; Strummer, Joe. I don't call that stealing. |

Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics

Not sure he is talking about bending the rules. I believe he is alluding to the old expression "The first casualty of war is truth." |

Levy – Rotten Love Lyrics

I think the meaning of this song is fairly obvious: a guy is being rejected by the women in his life so he thinks his love is rotten. Oh how I love this song... |

M. Ward – Carolina Lyrics

I think it's about starting over with a former girlfriend. He's trying to take it slow, perhaps not trusting her and she doesn't understand what the problem is. |

The Beautiful South – Song For Whoever Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
I think think this song is about the one woman he loved. There were others who were flings and didn't mean anything to him ("I love you from the bottom of my pencil case.") They provided material for songs but nothing else because he couldn't remember their names. But he loved Mary and she killed herself ("Turned her grief into glory") and that ended his inspiration to write songs. ("She ripped his ribbon to shreds.") |

Matthew Sweet – Winona Lyrics
|
I bought this album in 1991 simply because there was a song on it named "Winona." I assumed it was about my hometown of Winona, Minnesota. Unfortunately it's just Matthew crushing on Winona Ryder (who, btw was born in Winona, Minnesota.) |

The 6ths – He Didn't Lyrics

Perhaps the most beautifully pessimistic song I've ever heard. It'll end in tears, but not for years." Sung by Bob Mould of Husker Du and Sugar. |

Soft Cell – Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Lyrics

This song so perfectly describes a relationship I just ended with a co-worker. Sometimes after an initial physical attraction you realize there's nothing else to base the relationship on. Also check out the excellent cover by David Gray. |

Tilly and the Wall – Nights of the Living Dead Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
This is also my favorite Tilly song. Mainly because the whole tap-dancer as percussionist thing isn't quite as annoying here. This song is like a musical coming of age story. I hope I never get too old to shout "I wanna fuck it up and I feel so alive!" |

Okkervil River – Kansas City Lyrics
|
I’ll tell you one thing that you should never do - never let a woman tell you she loves you. She’ll call you “baby,” she’ll look in your eye, then she’ll get on that airplane and wave “bye bye bye bye bye bye, baby.” No shit. I'll never make that mistake again. |

Okkervil River – Westfall Lyrics
|
I agree with the above statements, although I would object to classifying OR as country. If you ever get a chance to see OR live, do it. Their version of "Westfall" is sped up and rocked out. At the show I attended a mini mosh pit even formed. Try to picture that. |

Okkervil River – It Ends with a Fall Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
"Wish I could remember why it mattered to me." My favorite OR song. One of my favorite songs by any band actually. This song is a collection of conflicting statements and emotions. Reminds me of relationship I've been interwined in now for 6 years. Like most great songs the main theme is resignation to the failure of romance. "I won't let you go, although the moment stole my self-crontrol from us all and it can only end...end with a fall." |

Mercury Rev – Tides Of The Moon Lyrics
|
This is my kind of song: a rambling, aimless, spacey, fantasy of telling that chick you loved and who didn't love you back that someday the error of her ways will lead her back to you. |

Mercury Rev – The Dark Is Rising Lyrics
|
This song has a sort of feeling not unlike meeting that one true love who dumped you later in the afterlife and just sort of walking along a creek talking about what happened in your lives after you parted ways. |

Mercury Rev – Holes Lyrics
|
I suspect this song was written on a tour bus crossing the vast empty spaces of some flyover state like Nebraska. Just sitting and staring out the window and watching the moonlit landscape flow by. Also, I suspect a great deal of weed participated in the writing process. |

Mercury Rev – Car Wash Hair Lyrics
|
This song reminds me of having sex with Deadheads. If you live out of the back of a VW Microbus the only place you can wash your hair is at one of those self-service car washes with the high-pressure hoses. And, as we all know, Deadhead chicks will pretty much bang any dude/chick so this guy is saying the chick he banged in the back of her VW slept with a chick in between times sleeping with him. Well, that's what I choose to believe anyway. |

Mercury Rev – Nite And Fog Lyrics
|
I'm pretty sure monsters aren't particularly interested in "soles," unless all that wandering in barren, moonlit landscapes has caused their shoes to wear out. Anyway, I would say this song is a typical Mercury Rev space rant about fucking up a relationship. |

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
I think this song is about Doug inviting a chick over to his place to hang out and she instead goes and lies in the sun. His feeling of being dissed results in the rant that makes up the 2nd half of the song. Deciding that even though this particular didn' want to be with him that at least his mom thinks he's special. I love this song and the line "It's alright now, I'm getting over getting mine." Reminds me of a girl I loved who immediately moved on to someone else after telling me she wanted to marry me. |

Daniel Johnston – Syrup Of Tears Lyrics
|
"Why can't we syrup for sorrow pancakes so flat?" I think it's an expression of regret and almost apology to a woman he loved. His depression interfered with his ability to make the relationship work. "Until we meet again I won't give up." |

The 6ths – Oahu Lyrics

The meaning is obvious. The true triumph is the 25:10 of synthesized waves that end the song. This song is required listening for me on long drives. Very comforting and relaxing as the landscape drifts by. |

Luna – California (All the Way) Lyrics

Luna – Indian Summer Lyrics
|
This, of course, is a cover of a Beat Happening song. Wonderful wordplay in this song, nothing beats "French toast with molasses, croquet and baked Alaskas." This song reminds me of a girl i met when I was working a summer job in a national park. We had a great summer together and I never saw her again.
