Lady GaGa – Donatella Lyrics 9 years ago
I have to say that I'm not a big fan of Gaga, but I particulary like this song for the quality of the lyrics and the way Gaga paints well the stereotype of a model/socialite rich girl lifestyles. In the lyrics those two lifestyles get mixed and go together, and it's interesting how Gaga in her writing switches between.
So let's see:

"I am so fab
Check out
I'm blonde
I'm skinny
I'm rich,
And I'm a little bit of a bitch"

=> Skinny, blond and rich: these are the nowadays(saddly) watchwords of the Fashion field. It almost became a standard and you don't have to be in the fashion industry to feel the strain of it, since this image of the perfect girl related to blond hair and thinness is also transported by media and infected all the girls' minds.

"I wanna dress you up in silk, Taffeta
Tailor these clothes to fit your guilt, what's your size?"

=> (Talk from the perspective of the designer) Again always a question of size, the rule is that a model is wanted to be fit in the smallest range size industrilized, this is why the more thinner they get, the better is. But some girls will usually get guilty about their size no matter what and will never feel enough skinny and good with themselves, they'll always tell you that something's wrong with their bodies.

"This purse can hold my black card and tiara
Versace promises I will, Dolce Vita"

=> This is definitley about the lifestyle of some rich girls ("tiara" => princess) that spend their days only shopping and buying clothes, and thinking that they are "in" and have a "dolce vita" (sweet life) since they are made in Versace. They will usually attend socialite parties where they will only need a small purse to hold their black card ("black American Express card" which is an elite credit card that is only given to the wealthiest members of society).
It is applyable on models too who will usually tend to be fashionable since they are part of the fashion field, and will attend socialite parties and meet people. (I'm thinking especially about events like the Victoria Secret Shows that sent the modeling world and its actors in spotlight the last years, it became "in" to be a model or to "go out" with a model)

"What do you wanna wear this spring?
What do you think is the new thing?
What do you wanna wear this season?
Donatella"

=> It feels for me like a discussion with the designer (probably held between Gaga and Donatella since they are friends, Gaga asks about the new thing the trend to come out, and the designer (Donatella) asks back about the trend Gaga would like to see come up)
This summarizes a little bit what the fashion is about: trends. it became "hype" to be on that "trends" to always be on the list and on the new.

"(I'm smokin em on full tank of gas)
Mi-Mi-Bella
(I'm a rich bitch, I'm the upper class)
All of the day
(I'm the pearl to your oyster, I'm a babe)
I'm gonna smoke Marlboro Lights and drink Champagne
(I smoke Marlboro Reds and drink Champagne)
Donatella"

=> Models get this habit to chain-smoke, in order to cut their appetite. So the "tank of gas" here may refers to the enourmous amount of lighters (>gas) they need to keep up with their heavy smoking, due among others to the stress models are constantly going under.

"Cause she walks so bad, like it feels so good"

=> The walk of the model: one of the rules is not to smile cause looking good is not the point on the runaway, the attention should be dragged on the outfit itself not the model (considered only as a walking coat-hanger). Hence, models are always having while walking "that face" where they look bad, yet their walk is stunning.

"Voodoo, Voodoo, Voo-Don-Na-Na"

=> Voo (Vodoo) + Dona = Donatella is associated with sorcery for applying some kind of complex charm that drags girls into her fancy creations and fashion.

"Walk down the runway, but don't puke, It's okay
You just had a salad today, Boulangerie
Just ask your gay friends their advice, before you"

=> As the "big thing" is about to get skinny no matter what, models will tend (in addition to smoking) to keep their thin shape with eating light foods and making themselves puke. Something that leads generally into anorexia.
(For the advice part it's because gays are well known for their neat taste)

"All of the day
I'm gonna wear designer and forget your name
Donatella, Donatella"

=> These "blond girls" the lyrics are about will probably recite you all the names of the fashion brands and desginers, but will never remeber the name of a friend, or you haha!

James Morrison – Broken strings Lyrics 9 years ago
Those lyrics never made sense to me as much as they do now, I definitely can relate to this song after 6 years not hearing it.

For me the song is about two people that loved each other but then went apart (probably because of the girl messing and cheating "I tried to forgive but It's not enough"), but then again when they tried to give a chance to their relationship it felt all wrong and not the same. He says that you "cannot play on Broken Strings", means you cannot compose something with a string less instrument; you cannot start something that is going to launch from broken things. Once it's over, it never feels the same again and you can never look at the person the same.

He's broke and his love for that girl is deteriorated (But you broke me, now I can't feel anything - How can I give anymore when I love you a little less than before?). But though they try to carry on they quickly feel they just can't, they try to build again the relationship but since it's based on "ruins" (Playing house in the ruins of us - When there's nothing left to save, It's like chasing the very last train when it's too late), it doesn't work anymore, and the hurt is still there to recall the problem.

Very personal lyrics!

Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 10 years ago
Before exposing my version of the song meaning, I have to say first that it's been a while I didn't read such a good lyrics! This song is just amazingly written!!

The lyrics are about a man who's in love with a person to the point of worshipping her, and putting her at the same level than the gods ("If the Heavens ever did speak, she's the last true mouth piece"). She is in fact his religion and church. That man finds consolation in his Goddess when the real religion and the church bore him while his Goddess only asks him about love. ("Every Sunday's getting more bleak, a fresh poison each week, we were born sick, you heard them say it"). He’s getting tired the poisonous words the ministers preach, claiming that people like the singer and his lover are flawed from the beginning.("My church offers no absolutes. She tells me 'worship in the bedroom')

"If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight [people used to worship the sun]
To keep the goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course [for the sacrifice]
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work"

"Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good god, let me give you my life"

Oh my god how I just love this part, definitely my favourite!!

"No masters or kings when the ritual begins [making love]
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean"

After understanding what the song is about I think it gets pretty clear with the last verses. Bref, the song simply amazing!

Justin Timberlake – Mirrors Lyrics 11 years ago
The song is obviously dedicated to Jessica!
Justin is describing how he sees Jessica and the new life he's about to start with her : "I'm looking right at the other half of me" "That we're making two reflections into one", "And now it's clear as this promise" (they made at the chruch) "So now I say goodbye to the old me, it's already gone. And I can't wait wait wait wait wait to get you home"

This is the best feeling ever, to find a person who is just your reflection, your other half walking in front of you :)

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 11 years ago
Reading again the lyrics of Viva La Vida just after ending a book about Louis XVI (Louis Vincent - and Stephan Zweig with Marie-Antointte) makes everything clear to me: THE SONG IS OBVIOUSLY HIM!
And let me tell you why:

1. "I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I sleep alone"

Well after reading this part, we are sure about the fact that we're talking about someone who used to rule, a king. But that's too obvious and I didn't mention this part to say this, because what that catched my intention is the "now in the morning, I sleep alone". That's Louis XVI in his last moments, captured in "La conciergerie", where he spends his last days before the trial. He's seperated from his Family, (the Queen and their 3 children). He is alone and he's thinking about what he had become.

2. "Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

This part refers to when Louis XVI had become a king when his grand father Louis XV, died with the smallpox. He was waiting with Marie-Antoinette in a parlor (the heir apparent wasn't alowed to enter the room of the dying king in order not to get affected. He was going to be king) when the courtiers came running to them and screaming all over the castle after hearing that the king passed away in his chamber : "The old king is dead! Long live the king". That's when Louis XVI fell on his knees and said his famous prayer: "Dear God, guide and protect us. We are too young to reign."

3. "One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand"

For me it refers to when Louis XVI became a king, and started to reign and discovered how bad was the situation of the country, he was trapped. He became the king [of a nation in decadence]. That bringed absolute power (restaured at the time of Louis XIV), but also a lot of responsibilities, and a hope of change from the people of France, who were living in misery for so long and to who God bringed a new young king full of good intent. (Louis XVI ruled at 19 years old, and succeed at his grand father who was well known for debauchery, and also for his negligence of the affairs of the country in his last years. His death was like a relief for the people at that time.)

4. "My missionaries in a foreign field"
Louis XVI was recognized to be a learned king: he was reading a lot, and passioned by the geography and the maritime navigation. He was sending missionaries to discover and to study foreign countries.

5. "For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world"

"Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become"

They say that the history is always written by the winners, and that's true. After the revolution, the king was falsely remembered to be "weak, without personnality, dominated by his woman, stupid, fat, a good for nothing" (and even to be a tyrant and a despot which was hard to imagine, all the people who knew truely the king knew that he could has been anything but a tyrant), this is how the revolutionnaries wanted the king to be remembered, all in order to save and defend the Revolution. But the truth is that Louis XVI loved his people to the much that he didn't want to spill blood even when the times got hard, he believed in a revolution (but a monarchic one, that's why somehow, he led the revolution). That's maybe the fault I reproche him: he could had spilled blood and mainted the order of the country but he didn't, that was the safetest option for him but he didn't want to do it, but badly the times never forgive the powerful nations that wants to get weakned. Blood had to be spilled at that time anyway, so he payed with his own, he was heard to say when about to get guillotined, 'People of France, I am innocent, I forgive those who are responsible for my death. I pray to God that the blood spilled here never falls on France or on you, my unfortunate people ...' When he tried to speak to the crowd and say these words, he was cut short by a roll on the drums.)
I've said all of this just to talk about the part when CD say "Once you go, there was never, never an honest word " it's like the king is disappointed to see how misunderstood he was : There's no recognition of all the efforts he tried to do (and yes, unlike all what was commonly thought, he did! He was encouraging the science at his time but most of all, it's thanks to him that the united state got the independence I don't wanna talk about this cause I'm not gonna stop if I start haha), everybody is pointing him, they are lying about him, he feels betrayed by his people.

6. "Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?"

This part confirms more than ever what I have said: this song is REALLY about Louis XVI. We're talking about "revolutionaries" "head", but most of all (which is for me a great way to end the song!), the "who would ever want to be king?" part which refers the "label" they gave to Louis: "Louis XVI, l'homme qui ne voulait pas être roi" (Louis XVI, the man who didn't want to be a king).

Good lyrics are good lyrics.
