Red Hot Chili Peppers – Otherside Lyrics 9 years ago
Thank you for sharing that with us, anonduser. **hug**
I have a question - well, a theory - about a particular line that I was hoping someone could let me know if I'm on the right track. (or explain it to me ,if I am completely wrong.)

The last line from the chorus: "It's all I ever." It seems like it should be "It's all I ever *HAD*", especialy since the third line ends with "bad" and usually these two sentences would rhyme. Which would mean that "It's all I ever" ends prematurely. It abruptly trails off, like an unfinished thought. Could that be an allusion to nodding off?
Also, the word "had" is the past tense of "have." But since he is using again, he now HAS it, so the past tense 'had' no longer applies.. Like "it's all I ever had" was a mantra he used to repeat, but this time as he says it, he realizes it is no longer true, so he stops himself mid-sentence from finishing....

Nirvana – Pennyroyal Tea Lyrics 11 years ago
No need to apologize for your in-depth post.. it's very informative and insightful! Thank you for going through the trouble of re-writing it after losing it before. Much appreciated!!
I figured the obvious stuff about heroin and his stomach pain, but never put together the musical tone change between the sad verses and the happier verse about pennyroyal tea reflecting the change in mood when he used. Great catch!
As for Anemic Royalty - I don't know about Heroin specifically, but I was prescribed Methadone for severe back pain. (Kurt also took that from a young age, which is shocking.. His pain must have been incredibly debilitating for him to be prescribed that, too. The doctor weighs a person's quality of life, only giving it if a patient's life would be a hell of constant pain without it, and when nothing else helps. Most don't know that it's used for pain management, because it's rarely prescribed for that.) Methadone depletes vitamins in your system, so you have to take vitamin supplements to keep healthy. I'd imagine that heroin is much, much worse for the body. There are times when the Methadone doesn't do enough for the pain. I can kind of see why he moved to harder stuff to ease it. But it must have been intense pain for him to take that step..

The Mars Volta – The Widow Lyrics 11 years ago
"Finally the narrator dies. "Oh Lord! I'm bloodshot for sure!" -- His eyes bloodshot from pain. "Pale runs the ghost -- swollen on the shore!" "
Not sure the eyes get bloodshot from pain, they dialate from it. I'll do my best with 'Pale runs the ghost" and "swollen on the shore."
I think the song is straight about dealers and herion use, and the "He" at the first and second verse is the dealer.
Up until now, he had been loathing the dealer, trying to stay clean. He looks at the reality of the situation through clean eyes: A disgusting dealer, and even more disgusting addicts. But in the third verse, he eventually he gives in for the taste that's worth dying for. He shot up blodshot for sure. Remember the "isle of open sores" line? Now he is "swollen on the shore!" As for "pale runs the ghost" - The ghost of his clean self is pale again, because once again It is just a ghost. At the end he cries out "let me die! 'Cause I'll never, never sleep alooooone...." He never sleeps alone because heroin is with him, within him.
He's relegating his fate to the drug; That he will always use. Rather than continue this circle of freeing himself from shame and looking for answers that never come by using, coming down and remembering the shame, then using again... He pleads to whomever to just let him die, as using will likely bring this ultimate fate.

--
To me, this is the only way that the line 'Swollen on the shore' fits, when paired with that isle of open sores one. I also agree that this is an amazing song, and one of my favorites. Tough to sing.. but a favorite of mine.

Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick (Parts 1 & 2) Lyrics 11 years ago
Great analysis, Idrewarainbow! When I was about age ten and first listened to my dad's Tull CDs, he pulled out his old LP and had me listen. (My dad is my main music influence - the first album I ever remember hearing was Lou Reed's "Rock 'N Roll Animal." So yeah, when it came to music, I never had kiddie stuff. When my friends were into NKOTB, I was into The Doors..)

The album's newspaper cover is my favorite of all time. I remember sitting, listening to the album, and having that cover to read through the entire song since it's so in-depth. I love the connect-the-dots and those goofy shopping boots. Oh, and of course young Gerald Bostock, lol.

Album cover aside, 'Thick as a Brick' is a magnificent piece of work ! I'mnot sure why he felt the need right off the bat to tell listeners that he really didn't mind if they "sat this one out." If you love and understand Tull, this fits right in.

The Who – Helpless Dancer Lyrics 11 years ago
I saw The Who's recent tour in San Francisco, and I don't know if they did this for the entire tour - but they dropped the audio for the words "lesbians and queers." Didn't matter, as Pete raised his hands and pointed to the crowd, and they loudly filled in the blanks.

But obviously in the context of the song, this isn't presented as a *good* thing - so it bothered me that they woud be so over-sensitive. Especially since they didn't drop the "beaten up by blacks" line, but maybe they were worried since it was SF. Still, it was odd hearing thousands of people enthusiastically screaming 'lesbians and queers." (Maybe because it was SF that they embraced that line even more.. )

That said, it's a very powerful song, and I'm so glad they decided to do this 'Quadrophenia + More' tour.

The Who – You Better You Bet Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's like a conversation. He's talking about a conversation with his girlfriend/wife: "When I say I love you, you say 'You'd better."

Then repeating the conversation, after he said 'I love you':

Her : You'd better.
Him: You'd better? You'd bet!

So, I think the line "you better, you bet" is a stunned reitteration of her reply to the 'I love you' - What? You better? - and then his reply back- You bet (I do!)

[I've light-heartedly replied to my boyfriend telling me "I love you" with "You'd better' without thinking of this song, and it was because there's only so many times you can do the whole "Oh, I love you too!" and my thought was 'Well, if we're doing all this stuff together, you had better damn well love me."]

The Who – Cry If You Want Lyrics 11 years ago
I think "It's Hard" gets way too much harsh criticism. But I can understand it, as it took me a while to really get into it. Maybe it took me listening it more, getting older, or both. But this song has become one of my favorite Who songs.

The lyrics come at you at such a frantic rate, as though the song is stabbing you with its sharp words. Which matches Pete's feeling that his guitar is like a machine gun, knocking down audiences. That reminds me of my favorite quote about Pete's guitar playing: "Jimi Hendrix made love to his guitar. Pete Townshend F***s his."

Pete said in his Autobiography that this was one of the hardest songs for Roger to learn and how impressed he was with his performance of it, and I can see why! This is absolutely an all-around magnificent song, lyrically and musically.

The Who – Another Tricky Day Lyrics 11 years ago
First off, I saw The Who perform this song live for the first time in over 25 years. It was on July 4th, 2002, just seven days after John's death. So, I think they were just testing new songs since they could no longer do My Wife or The Real Me live. (though I'd still love them to *do* the real me.. nudge nudge, lame joke, but you know what I mean. **ahem** Sorry. )
----
As for song meaning, I always felt it was about one of those types of people who are always having some sort of crisis, but almost all of their problems are self-inflicted or made worse by their actions/inaction.
They also exaggerate how bad things really are to gain others' sympathy, and the singer sees through the act: "This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you."

WOW! What an awesome first album to get! I wish my 11 year old self could have hung out with your 11 year old self. :p
I got into the Who when I was 13, starting with Tommy. By age 14, I had all the big albums (took me a while to find the earlier ones like 'Sings My Generation', as it was before the Internet was popular.)
BTW- My first album that I picked out all by myself was Queen's 'A Night at the Opera.'. Great album, but The Who is the only band I truly idolize, and have all the members' solo albums, mostly on LP (yes, even Two Sides of the Moon.)

Also a huge fan of Entwistle. Saw them in 2000 with John, and 2002 just seven days after his death. Both great shows, but definitely lost something without John's thunder fingers.

The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray Lyrics 11 years ago
I also have to give a huuuge recommendation to The Quine Tapes (although it seems like many people who are a fan of The Velvet Underground are naturally die-hard fans of them, and likely to have it..)
It has lots of live versions of songs that the VU rarely performed live. Also, the concert where the track Sister Ray came from was it's first live debut.

And you are correct: The second time through the lyrics that the words get "punched-up" a bit, and I love your assessment that it's because the situation is getting crazier as time progresses. That makes total sense, and just another reason why VU rocks on so many different levels!

The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray Lyrics 11 years ago
Hello, Sister Ray from 2002! I always assumed that "no kinds of love are better than others" to mean that love is love, and no matter who's involved or the circumstances, they're equal.
I'm guessing you interpreted the "No kinds of love" to mean "no love at all" .
Guessing from other Lou Reed songs, I think it's more likely that he's just saying that love isn't this big swooping all-emcompassing feeling that should be placed above all other feelings. It's just another feeling like any other feeling. And when you're in love with someone, you assume it's the best one in the world - when *everybody else* feels that same way when they're in love. But love is just love, so don't place yours above someone else's. Also, may be eluding to love between the same sex, .love for objects (like drugs, as he said heroin was his life and his wife) or anything else. I don't think he's denying it exists, but that it is in many different forms, all equal to each other. Like saying things like "Man, I love this brand of coffee!"
-
Also, love itself is kind of absurd. It goes against logic, requiring most people to use their hearts (emotions) over their brains when making decisions. It also accomplishes nothing except making you feel good, like a drug. Perhaps you meet a mate who you share a life with, but otherwise it's using a personal relationship like a drug - To get off, to make you feel good, and can make you act completely irrational. Then it sometimes you come down off it, making rash decisions because of losing it. **shrug** I know that might not make much sense to Sister Ray or Some Kinda Love - just thought of that and wanted to share.
Anyway, thought I'd answer you since no one did in over ten years.. so, greetings from the future! :p

Pete Townshend – English Boy Lyrics 11 years ago
I absolutely love the line "If you raise your dress, then I will bite." :-) Straight to the point, without being too vulgar.

As for song meaning: Being the first track on 'Psychoderelict", I believe this was meant to give the all the Ray High character's backstory, growing up as a boy in England. Since we are mostly products of the environment we grow up in.

Pete Townshend – I Am Afraid Lyrics 11 years ago
Wow, what a beautifully powerful song!
I'm not entirely sure of what Pete intended the meaning to be in the 'Psychoderelict' story. But I'll take a shot at it, just from all that I know about Pete and his music:

It seems like he's with a new girl, ready to embark on a new life and future together. But, he is afraid of that. There are no certainties in life, and sometimes being with someone new can make you feel afraid. Especially if the feelings towards them are strong, and you feel that your relationship is in *their* hands.

"I am not drunk now. I am not pilled down. My window's wound down."
"I am not running, I am not hiding" - "Be no more lying" - "I stand here naked"

These lines make it seem like he's also ready to be 100% purely himself, which leaves him exposed and vulnerable. That also leaves him afraid of being rejected at some point for being himself. But he's willing to take that risk, because putting on a facade, or hiding behind booze and pills, and not being true to himself is too taxing on his soul.
Even being so honest as to admit that fact that he is afraid of all this, which can be very difficult to admit to yourself, let alone someone else. But in admitting his fear, he's baring his soul that much more to this person.

That's just my take from many years of listenng to Pete's music and interviews, as well as reading his Autobiography. I could be way off base, but that's how I interpret it.

Pete Townshend – Now and Then Lyrics 11 years ago
In his Autobiography, I believe Pete mentioned this was about his wife, and a new, younger girlfriend at the time.
So the first two verses are about the wife, and last two are about the new girfriend. Hence, another meaning to the title "Now and Then."
"I feel so badly Darlin' all the time. I have tortured you so long.
But I am helpless in this pantomime. I am aware that I was wrong."
This is to the wife. He felt like he tortured her by being on the road touring, or in his studio working, and being an overall 'workaholic.' Many times he wished he could drop it all and be at home, becoming a better husband and father. But he couldn't, and that's the "pantomime" - The rock star he can't help but being. Then on top of that, falling in love with another.

"Despite the fact that I now have lost the only love that ever caused me pain"
Only a love that is strong and meaningful can actually cause you pain. So, Pete's acknowedging that being with the new girlfriend that he's madly in love with, he's also losing his wife - someone he loved deeply for a good portion of his life.
He's conflicted, but acknowledging the fact that sometimes "you fall in love, and you can't do a thing about it."

I believe he said that his wife felt sick hearing the song.

Pete Townshend – Don't Try to Make Me Real Lyrics 11 years ago
Feel whatever you want about me, just don't actually bring *me* into it. Because once you actually bring me into the equation, then *I* would have to get emotionally involved. l can't live up to the expectations that you've built up for me in your head. You think I'm perfect, which means I can only fail you - let you down. The best way to prevent that is for me not to get involved in the first place.. I won't hurt you (thus, preventing me from hurt as well. The real intention for this attitude. But I can't admit that to myself, so I'm putting it all on you.)

Kind of seems like it keeps in line with his feelings from No Road Romance. The only thing worse than everyone thinking the worst about you, is having them think the best about you when you don't feel that way about yourself. Perfection is an impossible standard.
I could be wrong, but that's the impression I get from years and years of hearing Pete.

Love this song, and much of Entwistle's solo stuff.
I was sad at first to see very few comments on his page, but then I realized maybe that's because he always said what he meant!
One of my favorite quotes from Entwistle was about how whenever Keith Moon would be blowing up toilets in hotel bathrooms, he was usually right behind Keith holding the matches. That kind of says it all..

Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 11 years ago
Sorry for the double post. I wanted to add that not everyone who breaks up with you will always straight-out tell you. Sometimes the radio silence on their part is their way of breaking up with you. It's fairly cowardly, but it happens. Either from their mistaken belief that this will hurt you less, that they don't know what to say, or because they're afraid for whatever reason. Again, it's probably the worst way to break up with someone, but it happens.
If an officially declared break-up were required for it to be valid, I'd still be in a relationship from seven years ago. :-p

Not sure about spirituality, though I do believe in fate to a degree. I have a similar story.
My "perfect day" was back when I was in a dark place.. I hadn't dated anyone in three years due to a bad break-up, and had severe and chronic back pain with PTSD from a dog attacking me. I was barely leaving the house, when a female friend from high school invited me out for the night. I almost didn't go, but eventually decided "why the hell not?" So, we walked around the center of a big city, and ran into two guys. She immediately clung to one of the guys, so the other guy walked up to me and said exactly what I was thinking : "I guess we're stuck together for the rest of the night now, huh?"
But it ended up being a beautiful night. We just walked and talked, looking at little shops with knick-nacks and such. And our topics of discussion weren't just small talk - they were really in-depth and meaningful. The moon was full, and there was a warm, calm, stillness in the air. It just felt perfect. Our friends went into clubs dancing, but we just stayed outside and talked for a good six hours. (At one point, a homeless guy came up to us, asking us how long we'd been together and when he was going to marry me. Even though we told him we just met, he asked us to kiss. Feeling awkward and pressured, we laughed did a quick peck on the lips.) As we walked down a quiet street, I even told him hanging out with him reminded me of the song, specifically the "It's such a pefect day, I'm glad I spent it with you" part.
We all went back to his place and our friends ended up having sex, but even though I liked the guy ,I just don't do that kind of thing on day one meeting someone. So, unable to help hearing our friends going at it, we made some hilarious commentary on their sounds. :p
Eventually it was 3am and we parted ways for the night with a hug and exchange of phone numbers. He said "Even though we were just stuck together, I definitely got the better half of the deal." I laughed and agreed. The last thing I said to him was "Thank you for this night." He smiled and said "Thank you... Like you said, it really was a perfect day."
He never called me, and I never had the nerve to call him. But I still remember his name, and every little detail of that night. I know he wasn't "the one" , as I'm about to marry mine, but meeting up with the "pefect day" guy gave me a lot of confidence and was just what I needed at that time. Maybe that's who I was to him, as well. (The Bowie song 'Heroes' feels a little appropriate, too.) I wish I had the nerve to call him now and just thank him again for that night, but I doubt I will.

You can meet one person and share just one single day together and still have had a meaningful, worthwhile relationship with that person. I am aware the song is about Heroin, but I wanted to share my story since it seemed like yours, DEcomposer. :-) Sorry about your heartbreak at the time of this posting, but I hope you eventually found what you were looking for!

Are men supposed to care about a prostitute's feelings? I think you missed the point here.
Also, I give a lot of credit to men who'll even admit to having feelings of inadequacy, as society has taught many of them to push these feelings down and not acknowledge them.

Here's a guy owning up to feeling inadequate, and the only thing you can think of is "but what about the poor girl he's with?!?" How's that for selfishness? Typical woman... (BTW- I'm a woman too.)

Love is supposed to be this flowery, all-encompassing feeling that you live and die for. But not John. Kind of reminds me of 'It ain't me, babe." You can't force yourself to feel something that isn't there.

It's about drug use.. specifically heroin. He's eluded to as much in concert. No matter how pure of a person you are, heroin won't refuse you, and even good people can be trapped by it.
This is him hitting rock bottom and trying to figure out where to go next. He's losing everything and assessing his life. There is a "Come to God" moment where he realizes that we only have one life to live, and he ultimately decides to clean up his life.

Remember, Pete is spiritual but not a Christan, so that 'God' refers to a higher power but not necessarily in the Christian sense.
