Björk – Earth Intruders Lyrics 8 years ago
"There is some sort of solution to the situation today in the world that is above and beyond religion. I had this dream that a tsunami of people would take over the justice in the world. So there is this kind-of naive hope that there is some sort of balance gonna be.. you know all these billions that are starving and then the billions being spent on warfare.. maybe we just have to drop this idea that we can actually separate us from nature, and be these kind-of perfect humans... I'm not so sure that it's such a good idea and we just have to accept that we are a human tribe and we can unite in some sort of a global beat."

"I mean, the human race, we are a tribe, let's face it, and let's stop all this religious bullshit. I think everybody, or at least a lot of my friends, are just so exhausted with this whole self-importance of religious people. Just drop it. We're all fucking animals, so let's just make some universal tribal beat. We're pagan. Let's just march."

-Bjork (2007)

The ancient Voodoo of West Africa has been revived by Bjork to remind us of a time of general harmony and sacred connection between human beings and Mother Earth. Ten thousand years ago, before the monotheistic religions and patriarchy hijacked humanity, there was a strong general bond between people and their environment. This is reflected in the very name 'Voodoo', which is derived from the African word 'Vodun' meaning 'spirit'.. not God, but spirit. This is an important distinction to make.

Rather than spending energy on becoming closer to God (thus separating themselves from the natural world) as seen in the dominant Abrahamic religions of today, these ancient people accepted that God was unreachable and unknowable. They didn't seek to understand the mystery of God, who he/she was, or even how humans came into existence. There was no prayer offered to God, only service offered to the intermediaries.. the spirits who control all aspects of the natural world.. that is, the world that matters to humans. Instead of worshiping their supreme creator, they placed the highest importance on these intermediary spirits known as the Loa. Shamans in these ancient tribes understood that the Loa, through ceremonial dance and other rituals, could take possession of their bodies for short periods of time, during which great wisdom could be communicated to the rest of the tribe.

Earth Intruders recaptures the wisdom of these ancient people with respect to Loa and the spiritual realm. From its universal, tribal beat to its sloshing-water sound effects, it is certainly one of the stand-out pieces on the Volta album. It touches on the fractured/schizophrenic nature of modern humanity, describing it as a "beast with many heads" that is steamrolling over the Earth creating uncessary turmoil and imbalance. As Bjork noted, modern people are lost in their efforts to become something that is beyond human and separate from the environment. In trying to differentiate man from beast, man has actually become the beast by polluting the environment with large-scale industrialization in an effort to support an ever-increasing population size. The shift from a pagan, female-centric outlook to a God-fearing, male-centric outlook has taken a great toll on the Earth, as most of us are now aware. So we need to revive the 'necessary voodoo' and reverse this terrible shift in thinking/spirituality that has taken place.

Note that the cover of the Volta album symbolizes a feminine-led human world. The human mind is still very complex and always reaching higher, and stretching.. pushing the limits. However, the large, heavy, cool-colored feet symbolize the wisdom of the pagan revival. We must keep our feet on the ground and remember that we are, as Bjork said, all animals who are meant to march with each other as one. The artwork on the Voltaic album reinforces the femninine energy that needs to wash over the world, as seen in the vaginal-shaped drops.

A final interesting thing to note is that there appears to be a general similarity between the beings that Bjork calls Earth Intruders and the intermediary beings often seen during DMT/Salvia Divinorum experiences. These beings have been observed throughout history in many different forms. They come in dreams (like Bjork's dream which provided the initial imagery for the song). They come to Vodun priests during ceremonial dances. They came to the Irish as 'faeries'. And they come to modern psychedelic users in the form of gnomes or elves (you may have heard the term 'machine elf' before). Often times as you are in the process of breaking through to the spiritual realm, you run into hundreds/thousands (i.e. a tsunami) of happy little elves who are very excited to see you, and help pull you through to the other side. Making regular contact with these intermediaries is important to maintaining a healthy relationship between humans and the natural world. This is the necessary Voodoo that will free us from the metallic carnage we've created and get us back on a healthy track toward peace.

Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree with replaceablehead in that Patti's book basically rules out any connection to heroin use, but that doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any images of rape and suicide in the song. And she didn't actually say that her LSD trip sparked/drove the overall shape and meaning of the song.. I think it just sparked much of the imagery used in the song (imagery which is used to convey a message). To me, the song is about transcendence. The "coiled snakes" of Hermes guide young Johnny through the major transitions in his spiritual life: from his darkest point to his most enlightened state, then finally on to his death. Patti specifically noted in the book that Land has "wild-boy imagery fused with the stages of Hendrix's death".

More importantly, I don't think it matters _who_ Johnny is.. it's more about what he _represents_, which is many people and many things. He represents youth. He holds the ideals of America and freedom in his heart. He represents all the strange goodness that came out of the 60's.. a goodness that couldn't live on forever (as marked by the deaths of many of its most esteemed figures, like Hendrix). He also represents someone who has been beaten down spiritually by the human world around him. This is most obvious during the initial scene described in the song where Johnny is pushed against a locker and raped by another boy (an image likely born out of Patti's fears with respect to Robert Mapplethorpe and his hustling). This is also made especially clear in more recent performances of Land, where an extended intro is given.

Johnny transcends from a depressed, low-functioning spiritual state to an extremely enlightened state where he indulges in dance (shown in the verses taken from Land of a Thousand Dances), sex ("dig your baby sister"), and drugs ("fill my nose with snow"). These things all make him feel free from the society that constantly beats him down spiritually. There is also new freedom found in the realization that there is no God to judge us, and we must judge our own actions ("there is no land but the land, no sea but the sea.. no keeper of the key.. except the one who seizes possibilities"). But ultimately, Johnny can't do it.. he continues to see life as full of holes and pain.. so he slits his throat and kills himself (as he transcends toward death), which is what the final part is really describing imo. It's sad, but also not sad in the sense that Johnny did find pure, untainted freedom for at least a short time.

Queens of the Stone Age – You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about how humans seem to summon/personify the spirit of the bull: a strong, fearless being who can be totally at peace in a field eating grass one minute, but can become a raging, insanely-destructive animal an instant later. It's a metaphor for our contradictory/dualistic nature. We're heavy/hardcore like metal sometimes, but soft/sensitive at other times.. pressurizing, then neutralizing.. just completely undamped. It also speaks to our tendencies to over-consume stuff that's bad for us (e.g. alcohol, gory/violent movies, etc.), which allows us to feel like we're strong and invincible. Fantastic song from Josh.

Tomahawk – Capt. Midnight Lyrics 9 years ago
Wake up.. our past stops right now.
I see light.. must be you.
Watch and learn, Burning Igloo.
Blood boiling in slow motion only shines of distortion.
Don't be afraid.

What? Are you surprised?
I'm staying alive.
I spit in your eye, drive a stake in you.

Take me away, take me away..
I gave you the world, it was all for you,
but I'm sick and tired of wasting time.. I want mine.

Take me away, take me away..
I gave you the world, it was all for you.
Stinkin' lies, stinkin' lies, stinkin' lies..

We'll die trying to live so long.
I can wait, and I should leave the phone off the hook.
Don't be afraid.

I agree with nagsworth that "Capt. Midnight" is partly a term for someone who watches/works under a veil of darkness.. like a spy or a mystic. The title most likely stems from the old radio/TV/comic series, where the main character was a pilot/spy who led a paramilitary organization called the Secret Squadron. I also agree with rageblynd: it's not "burning it blue", it's "Burning Igloo". It appears to be a reference to a semi-famous practical joke played by the now-deceased Austrian actor, Helmut Qualtinger. This line and the song title both fit with the general German/mysterious/Occult themes going on in Mit Gas.

As others have pointed out, I think this song is about a relationship that's coming to an end. On the surface, it's written (and sung) like a guy who's fed up with his girlfriend/wife for lying to him and wasting his time and energy. But going deeper, I think it's really about a conflicted person who is going through a change in Ego/Persona. This could be a man or a woman, but I'll just describe it as a man for now..

Basically, a repressed side of this guy's Self is now taking over and becoming the main, dominating piece of his Ego/Persona (or his "outer Self" or whatever you wanna call it). The formerly-repressed inner voice is saying "ok, I'm putting a stop to all this conflict right now, because it's sucking up all my energy and distorting my sense of reality". It's like when you realize you're being an idiot and say to yourself "hey WAKE UP and stop being stupid and afraid.. stop lying to yourself and be a better person".

It seems Tool has picked up that torch, at least to some degree.. I'd definitely check out Lateralus, Aenima or even 10,000 Days. It's heavier than Gabriel of course, but still generally melodic w/ a high level of artistry & complexity. Maynard, the singer, has cited Peter as being a strong influence.

Tomahawk – Waratorium Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the proposed line..

"D'amour, je tiens peau"

..is actually:

"full of more shit than us both"

Also, I hear the second verse as:

----
got memory, don't need a tattoo
young blood, patriot fool
horizon stretches in your eyes
like furniture that carries lies
you will carry my lies
----

I also hear "country germ", not "countrydom".

This is, as with other Tomahawk songs, a declaration spoken by an agent of the illuminati/occult.

There's a connection people feel to the country in which they're born, and this is used against them by the dominators and the warmongers, as noted..

you are my weapon, my son
country germ is thicker than mud

Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics 11 years ago
Yet how superb, across the tumult braided,
The painted rainbow's changeful life is bending,
Now clearly drawn, dissolving now and faded,
And evermore the showers of dew descending!
Of human striving there's no symbol fuller:
Consider, and 'tis easy comprehending –
Life is not light, but the refracted color.

-Faust II

The color of Goehte's masterpiece has rippled through the medium of Radiohead with their album, In Rainbows. The character, Faust, observes that life is not about some great search for divine light, but rather, it is about the practice of living with the enlightenment of God at your back; thus allowing it to guide you forward through your organic life, and not lead you down a dead-end path of obsession. This is essentially what the phrase "In Rainbows" means. It is the recognition that the source light which governs our world cannot really be seen nor fully understood by human beings ("dare not speak its name"). Although we have moments of clarity and deep understanding, these moments are generally temporary and don't last very long. As Thom Yorke said of the album, "It very much explores the ideas of transience. It starts in one place and ends somewhere completely different." This is the transient nature of human consciousness being described by the character Faust in the above passage.

So who is The Reckoner?

At a concert in Glendale, Arizona, Thom Yorke stated:

"..it [the song, Reckoner] was born out of a very trippy dream, one of those ones you wake up from and go, 'aww man, I don't want to wake up from that, ever.'"

The Reckoner is the one who wakes you up when you wish to remain in your current perceived reality or dream-state. It is the transient way of true nature that we all need to reckon with and accept. For Faust, this means that he must live up to his bargain with Mephistopheles, who represents the Devil. Note that Mephistopheles is mentioned by-name in another song on the album: Videotape.

As the story goes, Faust becomes so obsessed with discovering the true nature of life, he summons Mephistopheles to help him in this quest. Mephistopheles agrees to serve Faust right up until the moment he reaches the height of human wisdom/happiness/fulfillment; at which point, he will claim Faust's soul. Faust agrees to the deal because he actually thinks it would be impossible for him to reach that height.

Ultimately, however, Faust does experience a moment of pure happiness, and so Mephistopheles attempts to claim his soul... that is, Faust is woken up from his happy slumber. Luckily, Faust is ultimately rescued by a group of angels who escort him to heaven before Mephistopheles can take him.

The theme of transience can also be seen in the previous song on the album, Faust Arp ("it's on again, off again, on again")... another obvious reference to the tale of Faust. The sound of the music, like Reckoner, is also heavy with percussion and transient in that it folds over on itself between piano & guitar portions.

The most accessible metaphor that I can see for this idea is how people tend to want to escape from reality (that's the "bittersweet distractor"), and would rather call in sick on their day of reckoning. They, unlike The Reckoner (or Buddha, if you prefer) cannot overcome the division between self and other (i.e. subject and object, which make for the transient/dualistic ways of human beings). Again, we have moments of clarity and understanding, but they don't last.. "like ripples on a blank shore".

PJ Harvey – Long Snake Moan Lyrics 11 years ago
This is what I hear..

------------------
Dunk you under
Deep salt water
Bring me, lover
All your power

I'll be no hell
Out of your spell
Over, under
Die of pleasure

In my dreamin'
You'll be drownin'
Hell's low, God above
All drunk on my love

You outta hear my long snake moan
You outta see me from my throne

Dunk you under
Deep salt water
In my dreamin'
You'll be drownin'

Raise me up, Lord
Call me "Lazarus"
Hey Lord, help me
Make ready my veil

You outta hear my long snake moan
You outta see me from my throne

It's my voodoo workin'..

Moan!
-------------------

The snake is a very familiar image with various interpretations and meanings. Some people use it to signify evil.. others consider it a symbol of rejuvenation. This is probably one of the primary reasons it was chosen for this song. The image of the snake is something that really hits us on an unconscious level. The way it hisses and slithers is generally unsettling (or at least, intriguing) to almost everyone, and this is consistent with the unsettling, voodoo-like sound effects used in the song.

At its core, Long Snake Moan uses the snake as a symbol for transcendence, especially with respect to the concepts of religion, "right" vs. "wrong", life vs. death, and traditional gender roles. In a 1995 interview, PJ Harvey said:

"I look towards religion as possibly one means to finding an answer, to making sense why we’re here. That’s what drives the creative force, to make sense of one’s life. A very natural place to look is in that divine area, because it’s so strong and has been here long before us."

Although not a religious person herself, PJ understands the importance of religion in its pure, non-corrupted form where both 'God' and 'Satan' become part of the same abstraction. In other words, God and Satan are essentially the same thing on a certain level: they both represent something that transcends the boundary between the physical and the spiritual. They interact with the physical realm, but they aren't restricted to it.

The narrator in the song is identifying herself with this concept. This is why she says "Call me Lazarus", because Lazarus transcended the boundary between life and death after he was resurrected by Jesus. This is also noted in other lines throughout (e.g. "Over, under" and "Hell's low, God above"). She also includes the religious ideas of baptism ("dunk you under deep salt water") and obligation/fidelity to God ("make ready my veil").

Thinking about this from a more human/female perspective, the term "Long Snake Moan" seems to be a reference to both 1) the narrator's libido, and 2) her declaration of independence from a controlling relationship (that's where "Out of your spell" comes from). She has transcended gender by taking on the dominant sexual role in the relationship (a role usually played by the male). This role-reversal is accomplished through her "voodoo", where she summons the power of higher transcendental beings (like God and Satan). In this way, she resembles the snake and takes on its symbolic characteristics.

What is particularly beautiful about this song, imo, is that PJ incorporates the religious idea of transcendence into her own broader abstraction, where the transcendence of morality (right vs. wrong), mortality (life vs death), and gender (male vs. female) are all weaved together to form an extremely rich artistic expression.

Tool – Schism Lyrics 11 years ago
If there is one primary, indentifiable theme going on in Schism, it is certainly the alchemical concept most commonly known as "squaring the circle". Hence, the interlude..

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance

Squaring the circle is a subject that can't easily be summed up in a small article, but I'll provide some quotes to start with:

"The 'squaring of the circle' is one of the many archetypal motifs which form the basic patterns of our dreams and fantasies. But it is distinguished by the fact that it is one of the most important of them from the functional point of view. Indeed, it could even be called the archetype of wholeness."

-Carl Jung from Mandalas (1955)

"The intent behind alchemy and the alchemical work is personal individuation, which is wholeness. In order to attain wholeness, it is said, one must square the circle... To square the circle is to see equally in the four directions, and so to be whole... To find a new equilibrium where inner, outer, above, and below are balanced and in harmony, is to be One... The viscous flame of oneness comes burning away all division of spirit and flesh, and the diamond body becomes the eternal fuel of this emancipative, destructive union."

-Jack Haas from OM, Baby! (2005)

Squaring the circle is also referred to as "quaternity" or "quadratura circuli", and is represented in countless artistic works going back to ~1000 AD (and probably before then). It is, as Jung and Haas point out, a symbol of wholeness and balance between the inner portion of the Self (i.e. the spirit), the outer portion of the Self (i.e. the body), the heavens above, and the Earth below.

The video for Schism, in particular, brings out this theme in a way that the song by itself cannot. It takes us through the process of purifying the mind and the body, in order to allow "the viscous flame of oneness" to dissolve the boundaries between spirit and matter, between male and female, between good and evil. This is precisely what occurs in the final moments of the video.

In the beginning, we see a circular shaped metronome that bounces up from the floor and becomes suspended in the air, where it starts to oscillate back and forth. This is symbolizing a spirit that is in a state of confusion and uncertainly, thus it sways to and fro because it cannot reach a state of calm equilibrium. In other words, the circle has not yet been squared.

We then fade into a room that's very square-like and gray. This represents the world of matter.. the physical realm where the spirit is held within a body. You'll also notice there are wires that stretch across the room, symbolizing the lines of communication that are gray and stale (meaning they are not working properly, as described in the lyrics).

Similar wires are seen stretching out from a female figure's head, who now comes into frame. Only her wires are red, meaning they are healthy and open for connection. As she wanders around the room, she starts to sink into the floor. At the same time, she notices an opposing male figure's feet rising up out of the floor, as if he's stuck in a state of total unconsciousness. She pulls herself out of the sinking floor and is also able to pull the male out by his feet thereafter. When she does this, we can see that she rotates him around on his head, forming a circle on the ground. This expresses her desire to form a higher, spiritual connection with the man, which is clearly seen as the camera fades out and displays the two figures forming the shape of a compass. The compass is often shown and referred to in the works of alchemists, because it metaphorically represents one of the tools that can be used in the process of squaring the circle and reaching a higher state of being.

The female then carries the still-unconscious male back to the first room we saw in the beginning, and lays him down. She moves close to him (again, indicating a desire to communicate), reaches out toward him with her arms, and pulls them back toward herself.. like she's trying to pull him closer, but there's no wires available to hold on to. She's just pulling at the air, and is only miming the act of connection.

The male continues to remain asleep, as he starts to drift away from the female. She pursues him into a new room, which has a large tree-shaped crack in the wall where the male is hiding (the cracks are clearly another symbol of a breakdown in communication). The female then begins to walk on all fours and soon, the male emerges from the crack in the wall and does the same thing. This is symbolic of male and female communicating at a sub-human level... at the animal level. That's why they walk on all fours. They're not yet at a point where they can connect spiritually, so they can only connect through the flesh (i.e. matter).

Now we reach a crucial point in the video, where the female moves in close to the male again (only this time they're both standing upright). You'll notice her movements are very twitchy, again indicating that's she's vibrating at a higher frequency and desires higher-level communication. She then grabs his ear, and pulls it out along with a rectangular chunk of his head. This is represents the process of purifying the mind, as we later see a small goblin-like creature emerge from the extracted head piece.

Later on, we see another cancerous goblin being extracted from the male's neck, symbolizing the purification of the body (in addition to the mind). Once this occurs, the male figure becomes much more vibrant and life-like. At the same time, the female becomes fearful and weak as she falls to the ground. While she's lying there, the parasitic goblins start to feed off of her as they had been previously doing to the male. Fortunately, she's strong enough to sit up and remove them from her face so that she doesn't become consumed by them.

This process of purification through bodily extraction/operation is common in strong psychedelic experiences or experiences with alien abduction. Often, you'll read about people claiming they were operated on by aliens who extracted things from their bodies. This also occurs during DMT and Salvia Divinorum trips, where you run into therianthropic figures who reach into your body as if to purify you and show you what is needed in order to reach a higher level of being.

Once purified, the male now grows the same red-colored wires as the female has. They grow so fast and thick that he has to pull them away from his face. Afterwards, the male and female turn to face each other and become merged into a single being with a large head. Male and female (i.e. spirit and matter) have now become one, as we see the viscous flames rain down upon them, symbolizing the union of opposites. The squaring of the circle is now complete, and the spiritual/astral Self has finally reached a state of equilibrium. This is confirmed by the reappearance of the metronome we saw in the beginning of the video, which you'll notice is no longer oscillating back and forth. This being has now completed the process of individuation, and is in a harmonious, balanced state of oneness.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Fancy Lyrics 12 years ago

I beg your pardon? (beg your pardon?)
beg your pardon?!

beg your pardon?!
WOAAAAAAAAAAH!

we read it for three days..

we ran over it
like a perfect fit
didn't need our..
didn't need our eyes
watched it from the next island
----------------------

In an interview in 2006, Karen O said:

"I wouldn't say that only the softer ballad side of me is who I actually am, as opposed to the more confrontational, irreverent side. They're both interwoven. It's not like one is acting and the other is for real. Both are what appeared and came out from the first performance we ever did to the last one, and I'm not exactly sure where it comes from and I can't ever actually predict what's going to come out. Both of them come from their respective places inside of me, but I think they are just two sides of the same personality. But one wouldn't exist without the other. They balance each other out."

IMO, Karen is talking about the conflicting pieces of the human personality that constantly pull you in different directions (depending on mood, setting, circumstance, synergy, etc.). This is basically what causes your persona to change, perhaps many times, throughout your life. Sometimes, a single piece (or a subset of pieces) will just fit you perfectly in terms of your level of consciousness, age, experience, and current aspirations. So you put that mask on because.. it just fits.

However once you do this, you sort-of forget about all the other pieces that are still there, even though they've been run over and hidden by the current dominating piece of the persona. You just jump on this one piece, as if it's your own private island, and treat all the others as old news and throw them in a trash bag.

Then one day, something happens that makes you remember the other pieces of your personality that have been pushed down for a long time. So you freak out, and things start to get very complicated (i.e. "fancy"). Now, you have you decide whether you're going to jump to the next island or deal with the other pieces and try to integrate them into your life in a balanced, harmonious way.

This is the conversation that's taking place here, in Fancy. It's the dominating piece of a persona running into the others that were previously-hidden and pushed into the unconscious. This is why almost every line is doubled on the vocals; this represents the different pieces of her persona violently clashing with each other. This is also why she wears a mask during this song in some of the live shows from the Show Your Bones era. It's a total expression of the friction that's created by the complicated nature of the human mind, and the potential for balance if the conflicting pieces can somehow become integrated as one.

David Bowie – Beauty and the Beast Lyrics 12 years ago
Also.. I realize that the lyric sheet that comes in the cd booklet says it's "liebling" rather than "weakling", but that's what I hear. Other sources agree with that assessment, so you'll have to be the judge. Remember though, that this only 1 line out of many others that relate this song to Jung's attempt at describing the complex nature of the psyche, and the mysterious dualities held within.

David Bowie – Beauty and the Beast Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the meaning of this song can be most easily explored through Jungian concepts and analogies. Beauty and the Beast is essentially about Anima/Animus possession due to an unassimilated Shadow. I won't get into great detail, but you can Google "Anima possession" if you want to learn more than what I'm about to tell you.

To give a very brief overview of Jung's model of human consciousness, it starts with a "collective unconscious" from which every individual ultimately operates. It is the totatlity of the human experience that everyone's personal unconsious is derived from. Within this unconscious realm lives certain archetypes, like the Shadow and Anima/Animus. These archetypes are symbols for different aspects of the Self. The Shadow is all the darker aspects of the Self that we tend to dislike and project onto others. The Anima is the personification of all the feminine qualities in a man (simililarly, the Animus is the personification of all the masculine qualities in a woman). Again, Google those terms for more details on what each archetype means.

But when you read the lyrics with these concepts in mind, the meaning of the song is more easily seen. This is a man's Ego attempting to communicate with his inner Anima, whom he calls "darling". She consequently addresses him as "weakling", which is how the man feels when he is possessed by his Anima. This is why Bowie has the group of female backup singers say the line "weakling..".

Jung wrote:
"Turned towards the world, the anima is fickle, capricious, moody, uncontrolled and emotional, sometimes gifted with daemonic intuitions, ruthless, malicious, untruthful, bithcy, double-faced, and mystical."

This is what Bowie is describing in the second verse when he says "something in the night, something in the day". This is the "double-faced" duality aspect of human consciousness that Jung described in his works. "Beauty and the Beast" is another way of expressing this duality. Every archetype that lives in our unconscious has this quality. For every enlightened Ego there is a dark Shadow lurking beneath the surface. For every welcoming/positive aspect of the Anima that is consciously integrated into a man's life, there is a hostile/negative aspect of her that can take possession of the man's consciousness without him becoming aware of it. That's why he says "someone fetch a priest", indicating that he's possessed and needs an exorcism or else "someone could get skinned" (meaning he could have a violent, emotional outburst, which is common for men who are possessed by their Anima).

This duality of human nature is shown on the cover of the Heroes album, where Bowie has one hand placed on himself (symbolizing the ‘subject' part of the duality concept), and his other hand placed out in front of his eyes (symbolizing the 'object' part of the duality concept).

This duality is also expressed on more of a group level when he says "there's slaughter in the air, protest on the wind". This line is likely influenced by Bowie's time spent in Berlin in the 70's, where one could clearly see a collective split in Germany's psyche resulting from the Second World War. The "slaughter in the air" represents the static part of the psyche.. the part that clings to the status quo and doesn't want things to change. The "protest on the wind" represents the dynamic part of the psyche that wishes to shake things up and change the status quo. Again, this is a duality in man being expressed in more group-oriented/political terms, but it's also a reference to the personal psyche as well. The Shadow/Anima tend to act as the "protest on the wind" in our personal unconscious, disrupting the Ego's behavior as described in the lyrics.

This is reinforced by the interlude where he says "I wanted to believe me, I wanted to be good, I wanted no distractions". This is the man explaining how he's trying to be a good person, but he hasn't done any work on himself psychologically. He's been ignoring his Shadow & Anima, and doesn't fully understand himself as a result. He always thought of himself as a "good boy" because he's been dismissive of his own dark side. His Shadow is unassimlated, thus rendering him unable to clearly communicate with his Anima and reach the next step in his process of individuation. He's still "weaving down a byroad" without knowing how to get back on the main highway to the Self.

Finally, I thought it would also be interesting to note that the fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, is in fact a story about Animus possession in a woman, and has been referenced by Jung and others when describing this phenomenon. It's a long story, so I won't get into it here, but that's also something you might want to check out. I don't necessarily think Bowie's song relates directly to the fairy tale, but I think it serves to show how a deeper understanding can come from looking at this song through Jungian terminology and ideas.

Tomahawk – Mayday Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a second draft of my first post, with updated lyrics:

––––––––––
kiss kiss, bang bang
gotta tug on the hanging man
suck you clean
turn the penile into pentane
flee your cell
because I could chop it down
you can't disappear
because you're already gone

no trumpet sounds when I am coming
no drum beats as a mourning ear
I'm standing on the roof of the world
mayday..

you won't be saved
from the builder in the morning sun
you won't be spared
from cheating at your solitaire
keep all that soul
put the freedom in past form
the joke's on you
but now you're laughing at me

I'm putting in my two weeks' notice
as of two fuckin' weeks ago
I'm not in the running anymore
mayday..
––––––––––

Mayday is similar to God Hates a Coward in the sense that it's spoken by a similar, threatening voice (which is supported by the crunching, threatening guitar riffs and drum beats). It is the voice of the Illuminati… of the Occult. Hence the chorus, informing you that his true presence/knowledge is generally hidden (i.e. "no trumpet sounds" to let you know he's coming). When he says "tug on the hanging man", he's referring to the folklore surrounding mandrake and terminal erections (also known as "angel lust"). When a man is hanged, he will typically get a post-mortem erection and ejaculate. It was/is believed that this process would stimulate the growth of mandrake on the ground beneath. Hence the line "turn the penile into pentane", which is a reference to this type of alchemy and also to the album title itself: Mit Gas, the German way of saying "with gas".

The first verse is basically describing an old magical practice of attempting to artificially grow human beings in soil that's been fertilized by human semen; the point being to create a more "perfect" (i.e. android-like) human being; meaning one who is neither male nor female, thus assumed to be more easily managed and controlled. This is another reason he uses the line "no trumpet sounds when I am coming". Legend has it that the mandrake would emit a nasty, lethal scream when it was dug up, thus requiring the person uprooting the plant to blow a trumpet in order to avoid certain death. This also pairs with the following line, "no drum beats as a mourning ear", which is a pun on the "mourning ear trumpet" worn by rich widows in the 19th century as a hearing aid.

Over time, this mandrake/android idea has morphed into the more recent "hermaphroditic agenda" that you see going on today. The lines separating male from female have become increasingly blurred, and gender identity is getting weaker and weaker. The album artwork reveals this concept in the gold-colored tribal designs. These designs appear to contain representations of male/female hybrid mandrake plants (with 2 bulbs on one side representing the male, and 3 on the other side representing the female). Read my post on diginterpretations.wordpress.com for details.

The mandrake is important here, because it's symbolic of the influence that occult practice had on Hitler and other high-ranking officials in the former Nazi regime (this influence can still be seen in most of the major power centers today). This is partly why, I believe, the song is entitled "Mayday". It's a reference to the mayday distress call but it's also a reference to May Day (a.k.a. the Beltane festival, or 'Walpurgisnacht' in Germany), which is a very important occult holiday. It's also interesting to note that Hitler committed suicide during Beltane in 1945 (although the Russian invasion forced his hand more so than anything else).

These magical/occult references tie in together with the general German/Nazi/Illuminati theme going on in Mit Gas. This is also revealed through the shining crown shown on the same inner page of the cd case. This design resembles the crown of Wilhelm II, the last emperor of Germany who ruled a few decades before Hitler.

Keeping these ideas in mind, the meaning of the song becomes clearer. This is a wizard/magician/illuminati member/whatever-the-fuck taunting you and explaining how you should do what he's doing, and get down with magic/spells so you can "flee your cell" and become a living god (that's why he's "standing on the roof of the world"). He's also warning you that if you don't do as he is doing, you're going to die with the rest of the common people when the New World Order takes over and bankrupts all the nations of the world. When he says "you won't be saved from the builder in the morning sun", he's talking about Lucifer (who is sometimes referred to as the "morning angel".. the giver of light… the one who illuminates man and gives him special powers). But it can also be read as "you won't be saved from the builder in the morning, son" as if he's speaking to you like you're a child. Patton uses lots of double entendres like that, so it's difficult to really sum up songs like this; especially when the vocals are purposely obfuscated for artistic effect. However, I hope this leaves you with some food for thought in regards to Mayday, Mit Gas, and Tomahawk.

Correction:

"shock you clean"

should be..

"suck you clean"

That definitely seems to fit better with the other lines in that verse and also with the live performances I've heard since I originally posted.

Peeping Tom – Five Seconds (feat. Odd Nosdam) Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the lyrics posted are correct except..

"Come into me slide you upside down"

..should be:

"Come and turn this nightmare upside down"

It's no surprise that Five Seconds is first on the track list, because it touches on most (if not all) of the major themes presented in the Peeping Tom album.

The first, and probably the most obvious theme is the style of the music itself. I'm sure anyone who has listened to the album will know what I mean. It's Mike Patton's slightly-twisted version of modern pop music. The beats are very simple, catchy and hypnotic as one would expect from this genre. Yet at the same time, the songs are extremely rich in sound and there's depth in the lyrics. For example..

"This labyrinth is only one straight line
back and forth up and down your spine"

..touches on the Chakra/Kundalini concept of the potential energy held at the base of a human being's spine. It is believed that this energy can be awakened through meditation, yoga, magical practice, etc. When awakened, Kundalini travels up the spine leading to higher and higher states of consciousness. The "labyrinth" he's talking about is the maze of human existence that we all experience on a daily basis. "The plot thickens every day", and it's so easy to get lost along the way and make things more complicated than they need to be. That's why he's pointing out that the trick is to keep it simple and realize that it's not about "figuring the world out", it's about discovering yourself and finding out who you really are inside.

This leads into the most identifyable theme on the album imo, which is the breakdown of an intimate relationship between a man and a woman. Most of the songs on the album are related to this idea.

"Peeping Tom" is the exploration of a man's will to unlock the mysteries within himself by seeing his reflection in a woman (who recently broke up with him). That's why when you first look at the cover of the cd, you see a woman through the key hole. But when you open it up, you see a man's eye appear through the key hole. On the back, you'll also notice a black profile of the woman's hand holding the key to his soul. She is also shown in other places on the cd case where she's stripping off her clothes in a seductive, hypnotic way. These images are consistent with the hypnotic, catchy beats in the songs. I think that's where the music, images and lyrics all meet on the surface.

However if you listen to the songs closely, you'll notice there's a general double entendre going on between the hypnotic effect of a woman and the spellbinding effect of mind control techniques used by illuminati dominators. "How U Feelin?" and "Getaway" are probably the best examples of this theme being used on the album (read my post on Getaway for details).

Finally, there are the more abstract themes of alchemical transformation and the "dual suns" concept in alchemy (this is what the album artwork is trying to convey imo). For those who aren't familiar, alchemical transformation is basically about transforming negative energy into something positive (at least that's what it means within the scope of Peeping Tom, I think). That's what the man in Five Seconds is trying to do.. he's trying to "turn this nightmare upside down" by finding himself through his intimate relationship with the woman. This is a naive mistake that many of us have made, where we attempt to find the meaning of life in another person instead of looking inside ourselves.

This is where the "dual suns" concept comes into play, and this is most easily seen in the album artwork. You'll notice that the album cover is mostly yellow, which symbolizes gold. The transmutation of negative energy into positive energy has metaphorically been described by alchemsists as the transformation of lead into gold. So that's why most of the album covering is yellow. The yellow represents the "hidden sun".. the pure light of higher consciousness that this man is seeking.

However, the woman is displayed in all black and she's surrounded by a dense, orange glow. She is symbolizing the "black sun".. the "dark, consuming fire" of the external, material world which keeps us ignorant of the underlying spiritual realm. In other words, she represents the dark forces that dominate the physical, material world. She's extremely desireable, but only in the physical sense. To the man, she has become the dark, consuming fire that keeps him from moving on with his life after their break-up.

Circus Devils – Brick Soul Mascots Part 1 Lyrics 12 years ago
A "Brick Soul Mascot" refers to someone who acts as a buffer between politicians and business leaders (i.e. "a fourth referee"). Their goal is to silently manipulate commerce and social evolution on a macro level to constantly tip the scales in their favor. This is a small group of men who basically hold the rest of us at gunpoint because they (more or less) determine all the most important rules and regulations of business and finance (and hence, they determine which governments get which loans from which central banks). Notice that he uses the number 51, which means "power and knowledge" in the Kabbalah.

He also talks about "hunting season" and "fair play". In the narrator's eyes, "fair play" basically means "If I can constantly trick you over and over again without you realizing it, then how is it wrong? Fair is fair..". He represents a group of predators who just keep tricking people over and over again.. year after year.. or "hunting season after hunting season" as they see it. You'll also notice he mentions "big Gee". This is a reference to the Masonic G, which is often shown in their "square and compass" logo. In short, the narrator is telling us that he's part of an elite secret society who rules the world.

When he says..

"don't let them get you down boys
noses to the ground boys"

..he means "Don't let those who question your actions wear you down, Mr. Politician/Businessman. Just keep doing what I advise you to do (i.e. keep your noses to the ground), and everything will be fine."

Tupac Shakur – Starin' Through My Rearview (feat. Outlawz) Lyrics 12 years ago
When 2Pac says "the world is a game to be played" he's talking about the money game, and how the world is controlled through the creation of money and the concealed consolidation of wealth amongst the extreme elite. The song is describing how life-changing it is when you finally begin to understand how things really work behind the fascades of corporations, governments, charity organizations, etc. He's trying to wake people up and get everyone on the same page so we can actually come together and do some good for the world instead of constantly playing into the hands of the elite.

Obviously, the song touches on more than what I just wrote, but the title pretty much sums it up. 2Pac reached a level of understanding that few people ever get to, which made him feel both empowered and depressed at the same time (that's why he says "the world is behind" him, meaning that he feels alone and disconnected from what he sees as a broken society).

Beck – Black Tambourine Lyrics 12 years ago
It's possible that Beck's influence for the name of this song comes from a poem (with the same title) by Hart Crane, a black American who was born at the turn of the 20th century and committed suicide when he was 32. I don't see an explicit connection between the meaning of Crane's poem and Beck's song, but I do think a writer such as Crane would likely serve as an inspiration to an artist like Beck. I'll let you research Crane for yourself to determine if you agree with me on that or not.

In the scope of Beck's world however, I think the term "Black Tambourine" is used more as a metaphor to describe a broken soul. The narrator in the song not only has a broken soul, he's also very conscious of how other people can see that he has a broken soul (which makes his already-terrible condition even worse). That's why he says his black heart is "in effigy", meaning it is on public display for all to see. He also says "sharks smell the blood that I'm bleeding", which tells us that he views others as threatening to him (as is often the case with an injured animal of any kind).

You'll also notice that he mentions two black hearts, not just one. The other heart belongs to his female partner who is also suffering from the same condition. The narrator is describing how he and his partner are drawn together based on their common mental/spiritual illness ("my baby run to me"). This provides them both with some relief at night after a long day of suffering ("to keep it warm at night.. my tambourine is still shaking").

Of course like any Beck song, you can abstract the lyrics further and consider other interpretations like David Lynch did when he used this song in Inland Empire. It appears that Lynch used the song to enforce the idea that the main character in his movie doesn't know who she is. So in that sense, the two black hearts in the song could also be seen as two sides/personalities/dimensions of the same suffering person. But again, I think the main idea is "black tambourine" = "broken soul".

Peeping Tom – Celebrity Death Match (Feat. Kid Koala) Lyrics 12 years ago
-------------------------------------------------
waking up without you, it's all in my head
I roll over to touch you and see a horse's head
how did I arouse you with Keanu's face?
how well did I endow you at Dirk Diggler's pace?
how do you entice me with Beyonce's face?
but when you slice and dice me, it's like Will and Grace?

if I keep doin' it my way, and you keep doin' it your way
if I keep singin' it my way, and you keep screamin' it your way
we won't be takin' the high way, so let's try doin' it our way
and we'll be fine

goin' to sleep without me, it's all in your head
four glasses of Nyquil won't warm up your bed
you keep on doin' it your way, you keep on doin' it your way
I keep on doin' it my way, I keep on doin' it my way
you keep on doin' it your way, you keep on doin' it your way
I keep on doin' it my way, I keep on takin' the high way

how do you despise me in a Michael Bolton way?
guess how I despise you like Meg Ryan's face
and how I deify you like J-Lo's cheeks
and how you victimize me like R-Kelly's babes

if I keep doin' it my way, and you keep doin' it your way
if I keep singin' it my way, and you keep screamin' it your way
we won't be takin' the high way, so let's try doin' it our way
and we'll be fine

watch the credits rolling, can't we be friends?
or is this the end?
-------------------------------------------------

Basically, the song is about a couple who are at a point in their relationship where they fight constantly. They go through the same conflicts over and over again because they're not being themselves. Instead, they put on masks that are handed down to them from the TV.. from celebrities. They've basically become meme processors and have built their identities around those memes ("monkey see, monkey do"). They are so wrapped up in their fake identities that they cannot change and compromise to make things better for themselves ("let's try doin' it our way, and we'll be fine").

One of the funniest songs I've ever heard.. love it!

Peeping Tom – Getaway Lyrics 12 years ago
----------------------------------------
must escape..

16 seconds to make it..

escapin' the situation, I'm outta the trap zone
the ringer turned off on my cellular phone
the inter-mystery detector
holder of the silver money folder
black of the coat must come in by midnight

you've got to get away
because we're here to stay..

my getaway is the boat
pier 39 by the West Side Highway
my skill is on-point
a more easier route
police on my trail
I gotta slide away, move like express mail

you've got to get away
because we're here to stay..

my imagination surprise you
like the New York City subway third rail
one half is missing, three-third fail
can't be tracked down by the phone
definitely not by email

we get off on them
the back alley's dim
they look familiar in a high school way
we gotta get away
they get off on us too
sirens screamin' red and blue
lonely street lights that don't love my name
the blue's burnin'
we get off on them

the lesser.. a lesser lesser..
----------------------------------------

This song is about a guy who has somehow obtained secrets or knowledge of some occult organization, and is trying to free himself from their plan. The exact plan he's referring to is not very clear, but it seems related to modern-day "big brother" type surveillance and control (i.e cell phone taps, security cameras on the subway trains, data-mining on the internet, etc.). There are actually two different voices in the song if you listen closely. There's the main guy who's running away, but there's also the collective voice of the illuminati (telling him he better get away because they're here to stay in power and control everyone). But the runner is successful in his escape because he recognizes the illuminati's methods of control. He doesn't take the subway, and he doesn't communicate by phone or email... he uses a boat instead.

There are a couple of key occult references in the song. First, there are the numbers: 16 (a perfect square), 33 or "three-third" (as in 33rd degree mason or the 33-year cycle), and 39 (or 3x13.. also, there is no Pier 39 in NYC as far as I know). Second, there are the lines "the lesser" and "holder of the silver money folder". In alchemy/magick, silver is sometimes referred to as "the lesser work" and is related to the moon (which is most noticeable at midnight). There are other references as well, but I don't want to write a book about occult numerology and alchemy here ;).. just wanted to give a little insight into the overall meaning & nature of this song. It's basically a commentary on how the elite rule everyone through psychological manipulation (magick spells/alchemy), and the control of money & technology... read '1984' or 'Brave New World' and you'll get the idea.

Listen with care, o' fans of the Pied Patton ;)

David Bowie – China Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the video for this song makes its meaning pretty clear. I don't really notice any drug references in the video at all. There is one point where the China girl pushes up her nose, but it's not a reference to snorting cocaine or heroin. She's making fun of Bowie's Nazi white-man character, indicating that he's a pig (which he subsequently counters by pulling his eyes slanted like a Chinese person). Nazi-type dominators/invaders/exploiters are often referred to as pigs (e.g. the song 'War Pigs' by Black Sabbath).

I think the double entendres in relation to drug use that have been mentioned are more coincidental; it's a natural by-product of Bowie's abstract method of song-writing. But again, reading the lyrics and watching the video make the overarching theme come out.

"I could escape this feeling with my China girl"
(I need to exploit/dominate people of other races in order to feel right/sane.. i.e., I'm sick and twisted)

"I stumble into town just like a sacred cow, visions of swastikas in my head, plans for everyone"
(I invade/exploit/dominate the world because I come from the master white race, and the world will be ruled under my divine laws)

etc, etc.. imo, it generally points to the illuminati dominators who quietly run the world behind the curtains ("she says... SHHHHHHHH").

Primus – Hennepin Crawler Lyrics 12 years ago
That's true, it's not ONLY about environmentalism. I was just trying to point out the connection between this song and what I see as being the overarching concept of the album. If you notice, the album cover shows a plastic dopey character with a silly green hat riding a bicycle that he's permanently attached to by his hands and feet. This appears to be a satirical comment on the whole "go green" attitude that has infected a large percentage of the population.

But this song is also a commentary on how stupid and materialistic our society has become (which is where the other characters come into play in the stream of consciousness, as you pointed out). So I agree that there's more to the song than just the environmental piece, but I do think it has a deeper, abstract meaning. It's very difficult to put into words of course (which is why I love Primus).

One more correction after talking to my girlfriend about this... it's not "I've seen a lot of can" as I originally thought (I thought he was using the slang version of "can" to mean "ass", like "I've been with lots of women and now I'm gonna run to the next one). it's "I've seen the light again".

That line had been bugging me for a while, and I knew he wasn't saying "Vatican"..

Peter Gabriel – Shock The Monkey Lyrics 12 years ago
As someone else wisely pointed out, many specific/linear interpretations of this song will work. It could definitely be related to things like drug use, masturbation, etc. But I get much more out of the song when I think of it metaphorically and relate it to the human psyche, which is what the video is trying to bring out imo.

In the video for Shock The Monkey, we see a business man in a suit trapped in a very dark, uncomfortable room with lights flashing in from the outside. This room represents the physical/material world. The lights are very invasive, which indicates feelings of paranoia/fear. We also see a few quick flashes of a statue of a human head with stones underneath the skin. This is symbolizing the split between modern man and his inner psyche (i.e. his connection to the spiritual realm is frozen or cut off... in other words, it has turned to stone).

The man sits down at a desk, opens his briefcase, and takes out some paper with the words "shock the monkey" written on it in different languages. There's also a projector playing a movie showing monkeys. The man becomes increasingly frustrated and scared, as he can't seem to keep his desk from violently shaking and disrupting his work. This represents his inability to control his repressed inner demons which are now bubbling to the surface in a disruptive way.

His specific "demons" are difficult to identify from the video alone, but the lyrics of the song (and other comments made by Peter Gabriel) definitely indicate that these are feelings of jealousy in relation to a woman (that's why he specifically says "darling" in a few lines). But again, the main idea is that this man cannot control his fear because he keeps trying to repress it instead of dealing with it in a healthy manner. So we see the man become exhausted trying to push these feelings back down, as he slumps back into his chair.

The camera then fades over to the same man in a similarly-structured room. Only now, the man and the room look much different. He's dressed in white, and his skin is also painted white. This represents the man as a spiritual being... a being of light and energy who is not living in constant fear because in the spiritual realm, nothing is repressed... so there's nothing to really be afraid of (or to be jealous of, to be addicted to, to covet, etc.). You'll notice that he's sitting comfortably at his desk, and lets white chips fall from his hands. This shows that he is not afraid to "let the chips fall where they may". He's able to comfortably work around the things in his environment that he cannot control.

In this room, we also see that the lights are located on the inside this time, rotating around and making the room much brighter and dynamic than the previous one (indicating that this spiritual being understands that his fears come from within himself and they are malleable, just like the physical world). He sits cross-legged on the floor in a meditative position, holding two red sticks that he apparently uses to create a spark. I'm not sure of the exact significance of the sticks, but I think they're generally symbolic of the initial spark (or "shock") that ignites man's desire to reconnect with his spirit (or his unconscious, or whatever you wanna call it). This might also be referred to as "the process of individuation", "alchemical transformation", "rehabilitation", etc. These are all essentially the same idea that this song is describing.

Anyways, this "spark" ignites a circle of flames that surrounds the spiritual man sitting on the floor (showing that he is in perfect balance), while the paranoid material-man runs frantically through a forest (completely unbalanced, and victimized by his unconscious). As the spiritual man meditates in the fire ring, we see the paranoid material-man jump through the ring after being submerged in water. This shows us that the man is starting to become in-touch with his spiritual self. His unconscious spirit is shocking his conscious self, which initially makes things even more uncomfortable for him in the physical realm ("don't like it, but I guess I'm learning"). That's why it starts to rain in his dark room, and the ceiling starts to fall.

Then we see the spirit-man in the white room letting chips fall on the table again, while he laughs at a shadow of a monkey on the wall. He's laughing because he is in touch with his shadow-self. His shadow doesn't weigh him down, as opposed to the paranoid material-man whose monkey is much more than just a shadow on the wall. It comes in the form of midget people who literally hang on his back and arms, pulling him down and rendering him virtually immobile.

The spirit-man then flips one of the white chips as if it's a coin-toss, and then we enter a new room with a "gabriel" sign on the door. This new room is the material-man's new office. This new room is much more spacious and comfortably lit from the inside. You can also notice the statues on his desk, which are the same statues that we got quick flashes of in the beginning of the video. These statues represent his former paranoid, fearful self that is now dead. The material-man appears much more relaxed as he flips a coin just as his spirit-self did.

Finally, we flash back to the paranoid version of the material-man who has his head down on his desk. This means that he's been dreaming of the scene we just saw in his ideal, comfy office where he's a much calmer version of himself. This tells us that he's had a vision of a better life for himself because he's becoming more in-touch with his whole psyche, not just his ego-self. That's why when he wakes up from the dream, we see that his face is painted white just like the spirit-man. He has "shocked the monkey to life", and is on his way to becoming a more enlightened human being who can live a richer, fuller life.

Peeping Tom – Neighborhood Spaceman (Feat. Jel & Odd Nosam) Lyrics 12 years ago
I think I've made a few corrections that might make the meaning of this song a little clearer..

--------------------------------------------------
I'm your neighborhood spaceman
you don't know who I am or where I've been
circling like a satellite,
a signpost in the sky.. look at me
I'm really just a tambourine
the world is shaking me, so listen
cuz now I'm gonna sing
I'm comin' home
you'll hear my song through the galaxy
by the time this light has reached your eyes
a world has lived and died, but we're here..

time and space are landing right where we're standing
open up your hand and something good will happen
drinking from the sun, we've found a whole new planet
stars align a thousand times, that old black magick

when no one is looking, ain't gonna shut my mouth
and I'm cryin' out
when no one is looking, under your balcony
singin' the serenade
when no one is looking, I swallow thunder clouds
and kiss the hollow ground
when no one is looking, I eat the desert sand
and drink the Rio Grande
when no one is looking, I'm cryin' raindrops
and chewin' mountain tops
when no one is looking, I break another rhyme
and I'm stoppin' time

I'm your neighborhood spaceman
and your breath is moving through me
on the surface of this moon
I can say to you: "it's ok"
somebody inside of us makes this joy a must
then we'll be knee-deep in ecstasy
no gravity to hold us down again
we're free
a thousand light years from this place
I see the look on your face, and I'm there

time and space are landing right where we're standing
open up your hand and something good will happen
drinking from the sun, we've found a whole new planet
stars align a thousand times, that old black magick

when no one is looking, I'm gonna buckle down
I'm gonna hit the ground
when no one is looking, I got to understand
I'm back on Earth again
when no one is looking, I pull my car around
cuz I'm leavin' town
when no one is looking, I'm just a rocket man
I've seen a lot of can

I'll never give up, I'll never let you down
I'll bring you the crown
I'm opening up, but on the other hand,
I wanna be the man
I'll never give up, I'll never let you down
I'll bring you the crown
I'm courageous enough, but on the other hand
I'm outta here, my friend
--------------------------------------------------

This song describes how guys will typically run away from a relationship that challenges them spiritually or puts too much pressure on their psyche. That's why he calls himself a "rocket man" or "spaceman", because he runs away when things get too difficult with his woman. But, as usual with Patton, there's a double entendre. He's also a "spaceman" because he initially puts on an impressive false front to get the woman (e.g. he's a "signpost in the sky" saying "LOOK AT ME!!"). This is something guys typically do a lot when they meet a woman who they're attracted to. And when they succeed in getting the woman, they feel super confident and they get a huge surge of energy which makes them feel amazing.

But at the same time, they can't control it. Soon, that ball of energy makes the man become egocentric, thinking he can do/accomplish anything and everything (e.g. "drink the Rio Grande", "swallow thunder clouds", etc.). That's usually when things take a turn in the relationship. Now, with the guy being over-confident, his woman starts to appear not good enough for him. Tension in the relationship increases, and the super-confidence he was feeling starts to erode (e.g. he's "back on Earth again").

Then he becomes totally conflicted with how he feels (this is what the final verse is about). He still holds on to that initial surge of positive energy he felt at the beginning of the relationship, but now he knows that it was sort-of built on false pretenses. He doesn't want to give up on the relationship, but at the same time, it's driving him completely batty. He wants to open up to the woman (and to himself) but at the same time, he wants to run away and leave her so he can feel sane again.

It's a beautiful song :)

Primus – Hennepin Crawler Lyrics 12 years ago
imo, the deeper meaning with respect to this song is the same as the overall concept of Green Naugahyde. Les is referring to the foolish Go-Green movement that's happening in the world right now. The Hennepin Crawler is an example of how naive people are about "saving the planet" by using recycled waste materials to build more impractical material goods. He's pointing out how gullible people are being converted into self-righteous green fascists. They are fed false information about what is happening to the planet and false solutions.

The TV, the UN, national governments, corporations, etc. are basically telling these people that if they recycle enough and use highly-inefficient, impractical sources of power (i.e. wind & solar power), then they're doing their part in saving the planet (so they'll get to "touch that pie in the sky"). But really, they're only doing it for their own selfish benefit (e.g. to "impress them steam-punk girls" at Burning Man or whatever). So they can't see how it actually compromises their own survival, and how it keeps their eye off of the only real game that is played in this physical reality: the money game (so you end up with "no friends who're fit for deals"). This idea sort-of hearkens back to Groundhog's Day.. you have to pay to play. It's sad truth, but when you deny it instead of dealing with it in a realistic/rational way, the dominators will take advantage of your self-deceit, and you end up pedaling a bicycle (i.e. compromising your already-difficult life) for no good reason.

Primus – Tragedy's A-Comin' Lyrics 12 years ago
He's basically talking about coming collapse of nations/sovereignty by the illuminati...the dominators of culture, religion, science, etc. who run things behind the curtains of governments, corporations, churches, and what not. They operate "from the fringes of darkness" and are guiding humanity toward a one-world government that they control. They're doing it in stages...piece by piece so that people will not be aware of it until it's too late (that's what he means when he says "he plays a steady hand").

I agree with miramarjuice about the reference to Sarah Palin. That's the first name that came to my mind as well. But really, I think he's just talking about anyone who uses religion to swindle the ignorant masses. Sarah Palin is just a current example of someone who is a conduit between the masses and the illuminati.

Les is also pointing out how many of us feel caught because we can't really do anything about the coming New World Order, since we have no real power anymore. So do we just quietly sit back and be led to the FEMA concentration camps, or do we protest and risk losing our lives? It's a hard decision, because our pride gets in the way of our rational mind which would normally tell us "well, we can't control that stuff, so we shouldn't worry about what we can't control".

Very interesting song :)

Puscifer – Indigo Children Lyrics 12 years ago
"giggle and the flames grow higher"

This is a key line in the song imo, because it reveals the true nature of the concept of 'indigo children', which is a very new term that was created only a few years ago. This is, like many so-called 'new age' ideas out there, simply disinformation being pushed on the gullible. Even semi-awake people who welcome the new age are now being fooled by the same dominators who brought you Christianity.

The belief in the idea of 'indigo children' is exactly analogous to believing in a master race as the Nazis did. This is a baseless belief system. That's all it is. It's a tool to keep people docile and thinking that the 'indigo children' will come and magically solve all our problems. It's just another archetype that people have created to quell their fears surrounding the gradual increase in psychopathy in our society. If you really look into what the term 'psychopath' means, you'll find that it's very similar to the way 'indigo children' are described.

That's why they giggle as the flames grow higher.

Puscifer – Vagina Mine Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is the centerpiece of the album imo. To understand Vagina Mine, you really need to look at the overall concept of Puscifer and what it means at a basic level. 'Puscifer' is a way to describe how people today are too focused on their physical desires (i.e. the 'pussy' part of it), which leaves them vulnerable to manipulation by dark forces (i.e. the 'Lucifer' part of it). This is a common theme throughout the album.

Keeping this in mind, Vagina Mine can be seen as a double entendre. On the one hand, the song is obviously talking about a woman who understands her sexual power and uses it to her advantage by forcing the man to serve her before he is served. This is reinforced by the Puscifer character with her police uniform and strong physical stature. Going even further though, Puscifer can really represent anyone (male or female) who uses their position of power for their own personal gain.

So the more you let your physical world & desires rule you, the further you go down the mine, leaving yourself blinded and vulnerable to dark forces such as the dominator types who want to manipulate humanity through culture, religion, science, etc. It's a message from the dominator types threatening the people who are trying to gain more knowledge and freedom for themselves. The dominators are saying "you're not going any higher until you learn the rules and pay your dues...so just be patient, and keep the pawns below you busy for now until we tell you what to do." For example:

---------------------------------------------------
head down to the tunnel diggin' on Ms. Puscifer
tongue roll call cadence, hear the school bell ring
this vagina mine teach a patient diligence
keep a chain gang swinging, make a cat bird sing.
---------------------------------------------------

This verse is describing the process people go through when attempting to liberate themselves materialistically. That's what Puscifer represents in one sense...it represents the evils of the material world that, although previously-despised by those who wish to liberate themselves from materialistic bullshit, suddenly appear very desirable after taking on different forms. In other words, even when people try to escape from materialism with pure intentions, we can easily be tricked by Puscifer and fall back into it (since Puscifer can take on so many different forms and appeal to so many different sides of our psyche). Basically, the mind traps itself, thereby trapping human consciousness in general.

With respect to this verse, it can be read in many different ways. But the obvious interpretation would go something like this:

"head down to the tunnel diggin' on Ms. Puscifer"
facing a vagina at close range, ready to eat away

"tongue roll call cadence, hear the school bell ring"
flicking your tongue against the clit in a rythmic fashion

"this vagina mine teach a patient diligence"
putting the needs of the vagina above your own

"keep a chain gang swinging, make a cat bird sing."
making the vagina cum

But it can also be read like this...

"head down to the tunnel diggin' on Ms. Puscifer"
becoming obsessed with a material desire in the hopes of liberating your spirit (bad idea!)

"tongue roll call cadence, hear the school bell ring"
Being stopped and told to shut up and do what someone else tells you to

That "someone" could take on so many forms depending on the specific person and the material desired. One example I can think of would be a small businessman trying to make more profits, so he finds an avenue that he hadn't explored before.. and it works, but he runs into someone (a bigger businessman) who has already traveled down that road and has a sort-of private claim to this particular profit scheme. This person allows the businessman to make his additional profits, but he charges a fee and/or restricts certain actions in regards to the scheme.

"this vagina mine teach a patient diligence"
putting the needs/desires of someone else above your own

To follow the previous example, this would involve the smaller businessman being swindled and strung along by the bigger one (i.e. the one who appears to be more illuminated and awake to the various forms of material control). The smaller businessman is being told that he can have his additional profits (i.e he can have his 'liberation') if he's patient and does what the bigger one says.

"keep a chain gang swinging, make a cat bird sing."
swindling and/or stringing others along while being swindled and/or strung along yourself

Again, this would be the smaller businessman swindling those below him as a form of service to the bigger businessman (i.e. the 'grand master' so-to-speak).

Anyways, I hope this makes some sort of sense. It's hard to form one clear-cut interpretation of the song, and that's why I love Puscifer.

Tomahawk – Mayday Lyrics 12 years ago
-------------------------------------
kiss kiss, bang bang
gotta tug on the hanging man
shock you clean
turn the penile into pentane
free yourself
because I could chop it down
you can't disappear
because you're already gone

no trumpet sounds when I am comin'
no drum beats as I'm (something)
I'm standing on the roof of the world
mayday..

you won't be saved
from the builder in the morning sun
you won't be spared
from cheating at your solitaire
keep all that soul
put the freedom in past form
the joke's on you
but now you're laughing at me

I'm putting in my two weeks notice
as of two fuckin' weeks ago
I'm not in the running anymore
mayday..
-------------------------------------

This song is similar to God Hates A Coward in the sense that it's spoken by a similar voice. It is the voice of the illuminati... of the occult (hence the chorus, informing you that his true presence/knowledge is generally hidden.. i.e. no trumpet plays to let you know he's arrived).
When he says "gotta tug on the hanging man", he's referring to the folklore surrounding mandrake and terminal erections (also known as "angel lust"). When a man is hanged, he will typically get a post-mortem erection and ejaculate. It was/is believed that this process would stimulate the growth of mandrake on the ground beneath (hence the line "turn the penile into pentane", which is a reference to this type of alchemy and also to the album title itself: Mit Gas).

So starting with that idea in mind, the meaning of the song becomes clearer. This is a wizard/magician/illuminati member/whatever-the-fuck taunting you and explaining how you should do what he's doing, and get down with magic/spells so you can "free yourself" and become a living god (that's why he's "standing on the roof of the world"). He's also warning you that if you DON'T do as he is doing, you're going to die with the rest of the common people when the New World Order takes over and bankrupts all the nations of the world. When he says "you won't be saved from the builder in the morning sun", he's talking about Lucifer (who is sometimes referred to as the "morning angel".. the giver of light... the one who illuminates man and gives him special powers). But it can also be read as "you won't be saved from the builder in the morning, son" as if he's speaking to you like you're a child. Patton uses lots of double entendres like that, so it's difficult to really sum up songs like this. But hopefully this helps :)

Tomahawk – You Can't Win Lyrics 12 years ago
I think joed86 has the lyrics pretty much right on.

The title basically is saying that as long as monetary system is in place, you can't fight the power and win...you can only trade places with those in power. The song is, on the one hand, a satirical presentation/analysis of an Alex Jones Info Warrior (for lack of a non-sickening term). The words are mostly spoken by someone who is pissed off that the New World Order is here. But their only answer is to basically join some group, protest/terrorize/whatever, and trade places with those in power (e.g. "we are the police, and now we're gonna start a riot").

On the other hand, the lyrics are also indicative of a voice coming from a higher state of consciousness. The voice relates to the Info Warrior's feelings of disgust with the NWO, and how anger can be strengthening and constructive in a way. But it also recognizes that the monetary system is the overriding issue, and no amount of protest or anger will stop it. The only way is to stop spending/making too much money. Perhaps little by little, we can do that over time so that we don't keep propagating for the debt peddlers? I don't know, but I thought it was interesting to think about..

Tomahawk – God Hates A Coward Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm probably not exactly correct on every little word, but I think it goes something like this..

----------------------------
I've sewn my seed
where the mandrake grows
no footsteps go beyond it

I'll eat the death
where the rooster crows
flesh rodeos, yee-haw it

Player, push in your teardrops
make you a cyclops
breaking the branches off your family tree

keep you up like a fluffer girl
ain't that enough with her?
look in the sewer for my pedigree

(mostly inaudible at this point)

day by day..

listen closely to your mother
you can hear her ocean roar
sittin' quiet in the corner
put another record on
god hates a coward, sonny
got a date with your vcr?
watch another action movie
dream of me..

on the only piano
that wrote the fuckin' concierto
shoot pool with your eyeballs
rack 'em up

make a meal of your asshole
gnaw on your fat soul
dunkin' your heart in my vinegar

(mostly inaudible at this point)

day by day..
----------------------------------

To really understand this song, you have to look at it as a series of abstract metaphors rather than a concrete story imo. It doesn't matter who the narrator is exactly, it's more about what the voice represents, which is the satanist/illuminati point of view (hence the line "make you a cyclops", referring to the "all-seeing eye" that's often associated with the illuminati). It's your dark side trying to convince you that you can become a sort of living god through alchemy and magic (i.e. what mandrake and other psychedelics are sometimes used for). The voice plays on your fears of being ordinary or not cool enough (hence the title of the song, although "God" really means "Satan" in this case). It exploits a weak person's tendency to self-medicate by over-consuming and living vicariously through tv/movies/rock stars/etc. It tries to tear you away from your family and from love in general.

Hope this helps :)
