So you're the one that beat me to it! Glad to see others are listening, though.

And so the inevitable corrections...
"She ---pushes--- away
While she asks you to stay
Lucky you"

"She's breaking your heart,
But it's why it will start ---beating too---"

"Others try to ---win-- my heart in vain,
But it's you I turn to when they call my name"

Shinobu – Howard Melworm Lyrics 12 years ago
Anyhow, I absolutely adore this song. I love it's tone, it's little double-tale, and especially it's sound. I admit that it's mostly the vocals that really carry this particular song, by which I mean to say that while nothing in this song is bad in any way, nothing else hits home quite as well as the lyrics (or maybe I am just (unapologetically) crazy). The overall sound of the vocals with the effects and the delivery strikes me as ridiculously appealing and charming. Either way, putting the rest of the band's sound with the vocals is, of course, something awesome. I secretly wish that Shinobu just always sounded more like this.

But I digress. The real meat of this song is the contents of its lyrics, believe it or not. To me, it seems the song is about one guy talking about how much he likes and looks up to another guy (Howard Melworm) whose time has already passed. While doing this, he gives a number of details about Howard Melworm himself, allowing the listener to come up with an understanding of, and the means to imagine, what Howard Melworm's life may have been like.

The really great part about all of this is that I think everyone can relate to that little slice of life. There are plenty of individuals from recent and not-so-recent times that, while they may have been ignored during their lifetime, are largely renowned by the populations of today. Many of us have our own old or small celebrities we look up to and admire, even if no one else does. Shinobu delivers me the greatest pleasure of presenting this small every-day nature that I usually don't take particular notice of in such a great way.

So, yeah, I guess it makes me feel all worm inside. Don't make me feel weird for it.

Shinobu – Howard Melworm Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, first off, here's the way some of the things sound to me, at least:

"Howard Melworm, MY modern day Ibsen"
...
"Howard Melworm, if you knew what you meanT to me,"
...
"Dedications to intellectual VENTURES"

But I could be crazy. I haven't back-checked any of that, it's just what I always heard and understood the song as.

The Rakes – When Tom Cruise Cries Lyrics 12 years ago
I like to imagine the song is about a guy who wakes up just shortly after the 7 July 2005 London Bombings have occurred. He knows something is happening from the electrical problems and the news, but doesn't know what. So he tries to call his significant other only to find that the network is crashing from too many phone calls. This makes him more nervous, so he tries to call again, but gets nothing. No one is around at this time in the morning, so he tries to call all of her friends, worried that something might have happened to her too.

None of them are answering. Nobody is answering. He has no way of knowing or understanding what is going on.

Sitting on the edge of the bed in his boxers, head in his hands, he stares at the phone lying between his feet. He tries to call her again and again. Nothing. And then he starts to think. What if she's just not answering?

What if you just don't want to talk to me?

In the middle of all this, with no real context or knowledge of what's going on, he becomes so frustrated and desperate, he looks to the only thing he does know: their relationship. And he has doubts and fears.

I feel like this is the sort of thing he'd end up keeping a secret afterwards, only telling it to those around him after having a few beers to many and the conversation has gotten heavy.

Or just in a band he has. Whatever works.

The Postal Service – Natural Anthem Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the song is about the sort of drive and creative talent of someone who is young and in love.

When you're in love, you feel like you can do anything. Many people want to change the world, and with love, many people feel like they can actually do it.

So I think this piece is talking about how he wants to write a song for HER that will create radical, positive change, but will still feel familiar. In other words, she inspires him to go above and beyond and believe in himself, and the song will feel familiar because it was not manufactured or forced. It just came naturally from the simple freedom love gives. A Natural Anthem, one might say.

The second stanza enforces this idea of writing the song for a loved one. He moves from talking about large groups of people to just "you," the individual he is writing the song for.

I related to this song for those exact reasons. In my personal experience, after falling deeply in love, these feelings and conclusions just came naturally. I imagine they might for many other people as well.

Which was the theme for a wedding he had with his now ex-wife.

He is probably singing about his ex-wife.

You are definitely a tool.

Also, the Blink 182 list The Cure as one of their biggest influences.

The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics 12 years ago
I always feel a little silly for saying this, but this has to be one of my favorite songs when it comes to the lyrics. I personally prefer the Postal Service remix where it's sped up some and sounds a little more clear. But, anyways.

What I love about this song is how charming and peacefully upbeat it is. This tone becomes a little more confusing when the song's subject matter seems to turn a little "darker". The song's meaning seems to be almost completely clear to me at this point:

I feel like the point it's trying to make is that we don't have to dress up the world with romantic notions. It's like it's gently replacing our blissful naivety with more of a sense of reasonable understanding. No, the world may not be magical, but you don't need magic for amazing things to happen. The sun is not "setting". Everyone you know is going to die eventually. Things don't always just work out.

But these aren't awful things. That's just reality and that's okay. When you realize these things, you have to realize other things too. Like, we're floating in space. Do you ever think of that? Right, the sun isn't setting, it's just the world spinning around on the axis, but think about how INCREDIBLE that really is. We live on something that is constantly moving and shifting our perspectives and, really, our entire lives.

When we accept what things are really like, it gives us the ability to really appreciate it all. Yes, those you love and know will all die some day, but if you really understand this, you won't mope about it. Instead, you'll understand that your sadness means that you really care for these people, and you'll treat them right while you can. You understand that good things don't just fall into place, so you'll work hard to make sure good things happen.

Maybe God, heaven, magic, and miracles aren't real, but you're still the most beautiful person I've ever met. Life, though hard, can still be great.

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm still of the opinion that he's talking to himself throughout the entire song, with the exception of the chorus where he is speaking to his significant other. Throughout the song, I feel like the main emotions are sadness, anger and frustration. Having been in a situation like this, I really feel like the anger and frustration are targeted at himself.

I mean, think about it. If we're accepting the premise that he feels he's "really fucked it up this time," then it makes sense that he'd be sad, right? And it would also make sense that he'd hold some resentment and perhaps even hatred for himself, right? I mean, shit, how would you feel about yourself if you knew that you'd single-handedly ruined everything with someone you loved?

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 13 years ago
True, but he seems to imply that the person he is talking to is a male ("... my man").

So, following your thought process, it could be that it's a homosexual relationship or that he's talking from the female's perspective.

But, personally, I think it's much more likely that he is talking to himself here. Having been in the situation that this song perfectly describes, I can say that I spoke of and to myself with great disgust and hate. All the things he says here, I said to myself. The chorus, where he is speaking to his significant other, is almost exactly what I said to my own significant other at the time.

Green Day – Nice Guys Finish Last Lyrics 13 years ago
I guess it's normal to think this song is referring to nice guys going after girls. That was my reaction when I listened to this song back in the day. Listening to it now, though, I think it's just making fun of the concept of being the "nice guy" in general.

I feel like the "finish last" part is referencing how so many "heroes" end up getting fucked over in reality. A lot of the other lines in the song seem like obvious references to the traditional definition of good guys and bad guys in comic books, and I think the rest of it is just making fun of how "good guys" work. They side step shame they've got with convenient amnesia, they make promises they can't keep, their highs are great, but their low points are terrible and dramatic, they brown nose a lot, and they can think incredibly highly of themselves on the inside.

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 13 years ago
First off, let me admit that this song was never one of my absolute favorites from NIN. However, it always stood out to me in how well it captures the feeling of the end. If you've ever been through major depression, ever been on the very edge of giving up on everything, you've gotta know exactly how this song feels. At this point, it's not like you're choosing suicide anymore. It's more like you've been struggling to stay afloat and you're finally aware that you've gone as far as you can. It's just The End.

There are a lot of lines in here that stand out to me. Particularly, "You could have it all, my empire of dirt." It's something I'd said and felt before I'd ever heard this song. Hearing someone else say it with absolutely no connection to me just made the song all the more genuine.

Fruit Bats – When U Love Somebody Lyrics 13 years ago
This song's really simple, but, like in life, I think you can find a lot more depth in just the little bits of it.

For example, I think the simplicity of the songs is intentional and builds off of the lyrics. The first line, "Remember on the bus when my hand was on your knee?" quickly reminds me of my school days. PDA was heavily frowned upon by the faculty and the kids would always make a big deal out of it for a couple of weeks, so it was always showing how you felt through the smaller things. School reminds me of more innocent and simpler times, and I think the tone of the song definitely gets that feeling across on its own. Simple and innocent, but still really stimulating. The second line blatantly acknowledges that feeling you get when you're completely engrossed in someone, your heart is racing, your mind is foggy, and you actively have to focus just to do basic things like breathe or walk straight.

Someone above me made a good point: The song can put you in a really good or really sad mood, and I think the the lyrics match that. The first two lines are about the ridiculous amounts of excitement you feel when you're with that special person, and the last two lines seem to focus in a bit more on the hardship of it.

The third line: "I am the cub who was washed out in the flood." So you've got someone who is young and weak torn away from what's comfortable and safe and put in a situation where the odds are heavily against them. There are a lot of emotions and scenarios this could be referring to. Maybe it's talking about how alone you can feel when you know who you're in love with but can't be sure if they feel the same, when you're away from that person you love, or being in that position where it seems like you don't have a chance (i.e. The fat kid going for the pretty girl). That's just naming a few off the top of my head, but of course there could be many more.

The saddest, yet oddly the most encouraging, line in this song is the last line: "When you love somebody and bite your tongue, all you get is a mouth full of blood." It's obviously referring to those times when you aren't open about your feelings for someone. Maybe it's because you feel like it's not worth saying, the person won't care, or it really isn't the time to do so. I think it's one of the most torturous feelings in the world to want to tell someone, "I love you," but feel unable to. Still, despite referencing those difficult times in life where that may happen, I think the song tries to encourage people to not fall into that. It's all about the wording. If it had just said, "You get a mouth full of blood," it'd feel like a solid statement, the end. However, because it says, "ALL you get is a mouthful of blood," it really pushes that feeling of, "Well, that's a pointless thing to do." It emphasizes on not settling for that, and just being open about how you feel. Whatever the result is, it's better than no result at all.

AJJ – Sense, Sensibility Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is about a guy who is finding it harder and harder to remain positive and strong through the harder times in his life.

At the beginning, despite the "poverty and misery" and the feelings that he's fucked, he feels he has to try anyways, which shows determination and endurance. The next chorus shows his feelings of isolation and his desire for some form of unity or companionship.

In the middle of this song, he talks about he wants a girl with "broken wings", or a girl whom will look up to him and someone he can do something for that will love him for it. Unfortunately, this is where things really go down hill for him. The negative perception kicks in when he looks at his surroundings, and even when he looks inside himself, he can't see the better part of his own nature and instead only sees the uglier things.

Even if that's not enough to convince you, I'd urge you to look at the shorter stanzas. Notice how his attitude slowly shifts from, "You go your way and I'll go mine," which acknowledges that it's not about who's better or worse, just a difference of opinion. As the song goes on, he starts to see his way as a way of digression and failure and the other's as the way of success. "You go forward and I'll go back," and "You go upward, and I'll go down" show this pretty clearly.

submissions
AJJ – Sense, Sensibility Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it could easily mean that each time he tries to look inside himself, he's only finding the ugly parts. It's interesting to see how the song progresses. You can notice the tone shift from a hopeful/positive one to a very negative one. I think these negative feelings get to him on such a level that he's not even able to look in himself for inspiration or guidance.

Voltaire – The Industrial Revolution (And How It Ruined My Life) Lyrics 14 years ago
With how today's business works, I think that everyone initially has many more choices than they did originally. The down side to unique boutiques and stores is that people in a different town or state would never get to experience what the business has to offer.

The standing issue, then, is that these choices very quickly reach their limit. I hate going to malls because I know what they will always have to offer, and I almost never find anything I like. I don't like the idea of wearing shirts with logo's or catch-phrases I don't understand or don't really believe in. I refuse to be a walking advertisement for corporations and individuals just because it's popular to do so.

In order to really be an "individual" in appearance, you've only got a few choices these days: Either go with generic or plain clothes, like solid color shirts and such, and mix and match with other jeans or shoes you like. You can also pay for the more expensive clothes, but really, there's no point. One pair of underwear is pricier than another because some guy's name is on the back of it. The material is rarely anything to be proud of, and the artificial wear and tear look is down right insulting. The last option is shopping at thrifts stores, but even then, you're just wearing the recycled and forgotten products of today's society.

All that being said, I'd rather that the industrial revolution hadn't exploded like it had. While it's certainly had its perks and uses, I think that anything can and will turn bad when it expands too much.

Haha, fuck. Wow. Well done, good Sir. If that's really the case, and it sounds pretty convincing, then I feel sort of stupid. I've been singing the song thinking of other people, but it looks like I'm really singing about myself. What a plot twist!

I really like this Kalnoky guy. I'd like to talk to him and just get to know him. I've always really enjoyed the music. At first, just for the sound, the feel of the lyrics, and the overall attitude. And who doesn't enjoy a song that can cause a car full of people to suddenly break out singing along? But I feel like I get a lot more out of his music these days.

Sucks, though. I've heard he's a bit of a dick to his fans at shows. I've heard some say it's because he doesn't enjoy the attention. I don't want to shower him with adoration, I'd just like to meet a guy who can take so much of my thoughts and deliver them all so damn well.

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 14 years ago
America has done plenty of bed.

Do you know how the CIA came to be?

The purpose of the CIA was to overthrow governments and put in new leaders that would better serve American interests. Unfortunately, what better serves OUR interests is not what always serves those citizens' interests. Time and time again, America has purposely placed Dictators into power because it was more convenient for us. On the home land, it's about Democracy! But in the foreign spaces? The question isn't "What's right?" The question is, "What's efficient?"

Don't know if you know this, but there was a country once that tried to overthrow their dictator. They were out gunned, but they believed that if they tried to show us that they wanted an American political system, that they wanted freedom and democracy, that we'd jump in and help.
They were slaughtered. America did not help them.

You are right, though. We aren't Fascists. Still, you've got to ask yourself if this capitalism thing is good or bad. Don't think of socialism, or communism, or fascism, or anything. Just think of Capitalism. It's a system built in which only a few people can reach the top. Everyone else has to get stepped on. It is a system that sounds great and works well in a simpler, and smaller scale. Where everyone is allowed to follow their aspirations and open the store they always, happy to make choices that are both good for business and good for consumers.
As it stands today, corporations and small elite group are in control of everything. As it stands today, Greed has become an acceptable excuse for businesses when they make inhumane choices or disregard people for profits.

How about a big Fuck You? I'm sorry, but do you know for a fact that they voted for Obama? Or is this all based off an assumption? You think they voted for him... Why? Because they sound more liberal than conservative? Because they're Black? Because they're into hip hop?

You might see them as brainwashed teens, but I see you as biased fuck.

And even if they DID vote for Obama, how do you know they aren't on the same page as you? I love how eager everyone is to point fingers after elections. As if those people intended for the President to be a failure, if that is indeed what the President is. It reminds me of our last President.

You know, the one everyone hated. The one they made satirical T-shirts of. The one every made to look like a monkey. The one everyone called stupid. The one that this country voted in two fucking terms in a row.

Save your political bigotry and angst for something better than an assumption. This is your country too, so bear the responsibility and burden and stop playing the got damn blame game as if you were still in elementary school.

If nothing else, these words have a message. I, for one, think it's a good one. It's completely possible to take a meaning from a song or poem that the artist didn't intend. If you can't see the good in this song, I can't help but think you're blinding yourself.

Oh, by the way, I can totally see why we should have voted for McCain. I mean, the last Republican did great, didn't he? Where would we be without this illegal war? I certainly am glad that the Patriot Act allows the government to listen in to my phone calls, read my e-mails, and my text messages. It's not as if actually following airport and national security protocols properly would have helped. It's as not as if terrorists got by because of lazy or careless mistakes. And I'm sure glad that we've gone to war. It's not as if our original reason for being at war (terrorists in Afghan) has been thrown by the way side for a random dictator.

Last but not least, I'm sure thankful for the Bush administration about being straight, forward, and honest with us about the 9/11 attacks. It's not as if they've admitted their 9/11 Commission Report was straight up bullshit. It's not as if the government's explanation has turned out to be a bigger joke than conspiracy theories we all scoffed at.

But, in honest sincerity, I must thank Bush for Building No. 7. I didn't know a small fire or two could cause an entire building to collapse.

Flobots – There's A War Going On For Your Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
Seeing as your 12, I feel like I ought to fill you in on something:

It's not just television that's trying to get you to believe everything they say.

There's a war going on for your mind every minute of every hour of every day. You are surrounded by outside forces trying to snake their way inside your head. It's not just television.

It's advertisements on every billboard and on every magazine. Every advertisement is put in place with one goal in mind: To get you to spend money.

To quote Tim Fite: "And I know there's a master plan for everything you give us. And I know there's a reason that you're preaching forgiveness. It's good for business. It's good for business."
Ever think about Allstate, the insurance company? What is it they always say? "That's Allstate's stand. Are you in good hands?"
I wonder how good those hands were when they wagged the finger "No" to hurricane Katrina victims. So many people lost their homes in that disaster. Many had hurricane insurance, knowing the risk of the area, but the problem was that TOO MANY had hurricane insurance. When these people filed for their insurance claims, Allstate sent out investigators to prove that their houses were destroyed by something else. Example? They'd say that a tree fell on your house. Unfortunately, you do not have "falling tree" insurance, so we can't help you. It's obvious they're cheating the system.
Remember this: With every company, ESPECIALLY in capitalism, it's profits first, people second.

It's the radio stations. It's the pop music they play. Don't ever forget that every band and song selected by Record labels is striving to hit a certain nerve in you. There's a reason so many of your friends relate to that new hit song. They're going for quantity, not quality.

It's the people in your life. Your parents, your family, your teachers, and even your friends. They are all trying to get you to see things from their point of view.

So many more outside forces try to pry or sway your mind. Even this band is waging war for your mind. The difference would SEEM to be that they are waging war to Free it, not Control it. But you wanna know the best policy?

Question everything, and try to answer those questions.

I had no idea anyone had even read this. If someone'll read it, I'll gladly define the rest of the song to the best of my understanding.

I'll get it at the end, but hearing that last part, it sort of freaked me out a bit, too. At first, anyways. It just ends the song so abruptly. The beat, the violin, the drums, the rhythm-- It's all suddenly gone, interrupted by static and a foreboding, even threatening, statement: "We are the insurgents."

An Insurgent is basically a rebel. More specifically, an Insurgent is someone who is armed and is rising against the constituted authority. So, put simply, The Flobots are quickly calling themselves Insurgents, and setting themselves up against Government and the ruling preconceptions of our society within the first two minutes of their album. The sudden break of static could be used to signify their deliberate interruption of your daily, routine media. They have infiltrated the mainstream media with "Handlebars," and they are plainly stating their position. Imagine if you heard this on the radio.

Might freak you out now, but I can't help but wonder if all this was their intention. I wonder how many people really knew what they were getting when they bought that album. Make no mistake, they are here to "free your mind," if you believe in that sort of thing.

The public will view us as the bad guys because we oppose all that they have come to know. All that they have come to be comfortable in. Those that listened to this album must have had their worlds flipped upside down. It's not convenient, but the truth rarely is, and that's what we do.

We are the insurgents.
