Beach House – Take Care Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about someone who has decided they love a person, but the other person is scared/running. And they are letting them know that they will wait for them.

This song is lovely. I agree with the first commenter. I think it's about reflecting on friendships you maybe took/take for granted.

Jónsi – Boy Lilikoi Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree about the language. The use of the English language really separates Jonsi's solo work from the music of Sigur Ros. I don't think it's any worse/better, just different.

But I, too, prefer listening to his Icelandic singing, because for me it allows an interpretation that is based on the music/melodies/harmonies/tension/build up/etc without any literal guidance. That's something that is hard to find in modern music, and especially in music as beautiful and rich as that of Sigur Ros.

Jónsi – Boy Lilikoi Lyrics 14 years ago
Perhaps the lilikoi metaphor is more about the way the lilikoi grows? The vines are unruly and can grow (move) quite fast and they also obviously have a wild quality.

"Electricity wires are down, rainbow colours fade into brown" could also be a direct reference to the physical qualities of vines.

"Courageous boy, now you are gone
And run faster, yet have no place to go
Your spirit still burns, it's now a ghost sun"

The fruit of the lilikoi looks like a sun, so obviously when the plant has spread as much as it can (and has no place to go) and the plant dies, the ghost sun could be the ghost of the sun (fruit) that once existed.

Anyways. Interpretations are always subjective, but this works for me.

THIS SONG IS AMAZING. It makes me want to blast it loud and jump around in my bedroom.

Jónsi – Tornado Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is sung BY someone TO their own self-destructive self. The the self-destructive 'self' holds anger/pain/frustration, and it destroys everything in its path, including the other side of the person, the other 'self'. And this other self wants to be free of it.

Múm – Blow Your Nose Lyrics 14 years ago
This song tells me a story. Maybe of someone who has just lost somebody dear to them. And they're observing the little things that we tend to fail to notice when we get so caught up in everyday life. Things like bathwater, or how sand feels. And I can imagine this person going into a forest to escape. I know I run to nature when things become overwhelming. And that would explain the spores and forest floors.

It's a beautiful song about mourning lost love, but receiving love from someone who obviously cares.

Au Revoir Simone – The Way To There Lyrics 14 years ago
to me, this song is an expression of her feelings towards a lover. he might be an ex, or a soon-to-be ex, but i get a sense of her changing her mind. as if in the chorus, when she says it's just gravity, it's like she's saying that the relationship isn't real, the affection isn't real. but then in the last verse when she says it's fate... it almost makes me think she has changed her mind and is saying maybe it is meant to be that they are together. of course you could interpret that as they are not meant to be together. but all in all i'm an optimist so i like to think it's the former.

Mumford & Sons – The Cave Lyrics 14 years ago
This song reminds me of leaving behind fears, gaining the courage to go out and really live life the way that was intended. Going out and exploring the land, becoming independent (yet dependent on the land). This song is so liberating.

Bowerbirds – Olive Hearts Lyrics 14 years ago
Well I'm not really sure what each line means... but I get the feeling (obviously) this is song is about drinking. It has a sad, lonely feeling, kinda like the singer(s) are having a 'party' with alcohol, but it's "to forget who we are". And olive hearts.... well the only thing way I see olive relating is like an olive in a martini? Like an olive martini, maybe their hearts are drowning in alcohol?

i love this tune. to me it's about a person not needing his lover to be perfect, or expecting her to be insanely intelligent or false, or to change in any way. he is just happy with her for who she is. and in the chorus i can just imagine them lying in a bed as the sun rises and he just wants to look into her eyes and share the moment with her. it's absolutely beautiful.

Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is a lot more simple than a lot of these interpretations. To me it is about two people (maybe more) travelling and living life. And enjoying the beauty of adventure and different places and different experiences.

I get this most from the verse

"If I was crying
In the van, with my friend
It was for freedom
From myself and from the land"

Maybe there's a tinge of regret/remorse? Maybe he has lost the person he was doing this with? Maybe he does not really have these opportunities anymore? Maybe he misses the memories? I dunno.

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 14 years ago
To me she was hesitant of love in the first place, but someone came along and BAM it all just happened and there was nothing she could do and it made her really happy. But then it stopped working for whatever reason, and so now she's running again.

To me it's sorta sad in that this person wants to avoid love/being hurt, but at the same time it feels like such a liberating song. Like maybe this person just wants to need themselves.

I guess it's just about being so angry at the person you love. Them being angry at you. Being so in love but the relationship just doesn't work.

Low – Step Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's about a fight. I envisage a couple, and these words are from the viewpoint of the passive player. And they're just stewing on what has been said, knowing that all the hurt and anger is building inside of them.

First verse - could be referring to their children and how they seem to be oblivious to the war that is going on in their parents' relationship.

Chorus is pretty self explanatory - everything the other person says sticks around and is affecting all parts of this person's life.

"I'm the walrus darling
No-one ever knows my name"

The term 'darling' sounds affectionate, yet sarcastic. As if they are singing it to their partner but they're actually quite pissed off.

"You are the chorus sweet thing
Never sing that song again"

This is like a threat to the partner; like you'd better stop soon or else.

Plus the general angsty sorta feel to the song.

Just my interpretation.

The Decemberists – The Island: Come and See; The Landlord's Daughter; You'll Not Feel the Drowning Lyrics 15 years ago
I totally agree with mchugh's interpretation... however I feel like the third section "You'll not feel the drowning" is not so much the rapist's remorse (I don't get the feeling that he has any), but more so like a third party/narrator who is sympathising with the woman and trying to comfort her into death.
