The Knife – Silent Shout Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I love that this song is so open to interpretation. For me it sounds like the thoughts of someone who has been sexually abused by someone they should have been able to trust - a family member or a teacher, for instance. The first verse refers to their inability to discuss the abuse - shock, or shame, or a sense that maybe there are people who should never have to know. The second verse is ironic - this person does mean something to them, but what they mean is awful. A symbol of the abuse, and the shattered trust that should have been there instead. They're still intimidated by this person, the abuser is still present in their life and the victim is silent - they ramble randomly because they can't make coherent sense of what they've been through; "you stand by and enlighten me" is a dark sentiment - the enlightenment is only enlightenment of the abuser's real nature despite what their public image is like. The third verse is anxiety - the abuser belittles the victim, demeans them by calling them only half a man/woman. The victim dreams restlessly - dreams of teeth falling out often indicate the person is grinding their teeth in their sleep over stress - the cracked smile and the silent shout is what the victim sees themselves as - a broken version of what they used to be, screaming silently because they suffer in silence. The final verse is a warning and lamentation on the situation. "If I explain it once thoroughly" - testifying, or revealing the abuse - "he'll have you later cos it's never free" - there's always a cost; perhaps they person they tell will not believe them and reject them, and take the abuser's side, or worse, the abuser will abuse them in turn to silence them. "You were at the gigantic spree" - perhaps a reference to where the abuse took place, or the sense that the abuser does not limit their crime to this one victim - "I caught a glimpse now it haunts me" - the victim cannot move on from their trauma. Or to put it in a light scenario: A boy is sexually abused by his father; he can't understand why it's happening and hasn't told anyone. He can't reconcile the love of a father/son with the trauma of being betrayed by his father. While abusing his son, the father calls him "his little girl" or makes other sexually demeaning remarks about his son's "weakness" by submitting to him. The abuse has long lasting effects on his mental health. He considers telling his mother - but worries that the mother will not believe him and will take sides with his father. |

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I kind of saw this song as Robyn still being "The Other Woman" but that the guy is wanting to end it with her and stay with his actual girlfriend, and that this is The Other Woman's desperate plea. But even if you just read the song exactly as it sounds - that she's telling the guy to do the right thing with his girlfriend - it's still an amazing song. Love it so much. |
Ke$ha – Take It Off Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'm amazed a Ke$ha song has inspired this much debate about the true meaning behind its lyrics... |
BT – Forget Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Kaia!!! It's odd that this album is so effective that you almost feel proud when she comes on at the end of this song. I think the song is utterly amazing -- I haven't given much thought as to what the song is about -- just love the sheer emotion of it all. |
The Knife – Like a Pen Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I agree with the masturbation theories. Woman can't climax and it's driving her insane: "Sharpen my body like a pen Come on, I need to show it" She's trying to focus herself into orgasming - so much that she feels she needs to prove to herself that she can. "Something too small for a lense If I rub it if I wipe it" She's stimulasting her clitoris, but it's not doing anything - her magic spot has shrunk down so no one would be able to find it. "Guiding with one single hand Nothing's wrong you like the feeling" She's doing everything she should, and she's trying to convince herself that she can orgasm, that she's enjoying her masturbation. "I am all over the land Come on I need to show it" Again, she's trying to convince herself, but her mind's erratic, and what was her attempt at feeling pleasurable has given way to feeling frustrated. "Back on the mountain again I was standing watching seasons" She's trying yet again - the mountain is the uphill struggle she's facing trying to climax. 'I was standing watching seasons' might literally mean it's been a long long time since she's attempted to orgasm, or that she's so unable to orgasm that she's started daydreaming. "You're now my only friend I'm too heavy, I'm the burden" Masturbation itself is all she does now. She's so frustrated and pent up that she's isolating herself in her mind until she can come and be done with it. "Sitting and picking on myself It's a shiny, shiny morning" She's tried so long that she hasn't slept - her attempts at masturbation are now just 'picking on [her]self' - she's noticed that it's morning. The 'shiny shiny morning' refers to the breaking dawn - the wee hours. "And when the light finds my eye I'll be fleeting like a scent" Despite it being a new day, she is still attempting to have an orgasm, but still can't. When the day has pushed on too far, she'll have to give up and go about what she's doing. "I hold my breath and I count to three On and on outworn" It's her final chance - a focussed attempt. She is literally worn out by not being able to climax despite her efforts. "It must be five hundred degrees Will it show, in my show" She's been at it so long that she's worked up an immense heat (when you're horny it always seems hotter than it is). 'Will it show, in my show' refers to her trying to hide her frustration from those around her. Another equally valid reading is that it's about her faking an orgasm during sex - all instances of her pleasuring herself in the first example are replaced with a sexual partner. |
Florence + the Machine – Cosmic Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is an absoutely amazing song, and the first time I heard it I thought "Oh God, please don't ever let it become famous so we don't have people relating it to Twilight and New Moon." What an absolutely mediocre companion to an amazing song. Very powerful. |
Simian Mobile Disco – Audacity of Huge Lyrics | 14 years ago |
One could argue it's refering to the audacity of doing everything big and boombastically as opposed to on a more personal level... ergo Audacity of Huge. In the end, I think a lot of people overlook the very real fact that a lot of lyrics are written because they sound cool. Only problem with this song is that it ends. |

That would be the point - seven eight nine. sequential order, also mimicking a coherent sentence. |
Delerium – Wisdom Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The song is about suicide. There is one critical lyric that's wrong up here: "Life seemed unfair sacrifice for peace" should be "Life seemed a fair sacrifice for peace" (this also comes from the liner notes) i.e. giving up your life is a reaosnable trade for finall getting some peace... |
The Presets – Down Down Down Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Here's a thought - she drops an e and then he goes down on her...radical |
The Presets – Anywhere Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Firstly - very possible for a song to have more than one interpretation people. I think it's about getting involved in a relationship, or even just an encounter, that's too intense to handle, and all the repercussions of it, yet still deciding to give it a shot. |
The Presets – Are You The One? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
LYRICS: I don't know why I've got it so bad But somehow I find Out of the frypan And into the fire Wearin' it tonight Bearing our souls Out of our heads and Ready to go Slippin and slide I'm Out of control Trying to hide my Head in a hole There's something about you I gotta know before we go too far What I wanna know I wanna know What I wanna know I wanna know is Woah...Are you the one? Are you the one? Are you the one? Are you the Me and my girl Havin' the time on Top of the world But I gotta secret No-one can know You wanna find out Come to the show We got the music You've gotta go Temperature's hot babe It's ready to blow Until she finds out All she can know Some things are not Writing on the wall Before she goes too far What I wanna know I wanna know What I wanna know I wanna know is Woah...Are you the one? Are you the one? Are you the one? Are you the Creepin' around Cry in the darkness Place to be found Leavin' behind the Noise of the crowds And it's been a while since You've come around So let's make it worth it Lights and the sounds Pills and the spills Drinks to the shouts Just turn out your mind girl What it's all about There's just one more thing I Gotta find out Before we go too far As for any meaning, I think it might be about a guy who's empted to cheat on his girlfirend while he's out clubbing, but I don't think it matters - it's just an awesome song. |
