Manic Street Preachers – No Surface All Feeling Lyrics 16 years ago
I also believed this was about Richey, but Nicky said this was one of the first songs he wrote for the album, before Richey disappeared. He claimed it's really about his friends growing apart as they started families.

Prince – Play in the Sunshine Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrically this is pretty much exactly like 1999. Just a song about wanting to forget the troubles of the world and party way. Interesting that it follows the doom-laden title track.

The autistic girl theory sounds like it could be true. Possibly the most Beatlesesque Prince has ever sounded. This wouldn’t be out of place in the Abbey Road medley.

Prince – It Lyrics 16 years ago
If you just read the lyrics on their own, they just come across as another standard Prince sex jam. But the music is so dark there has to be more to it than that. Prince sounds anguished almost screaming out the lyrics, and musically, well, I’ll just say I wouldn’t use this as a love making soundtrack. I really think this is about the darkside of sexual addiction.

Prince – The Ballad of Dorothy Parker Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it’s just a story. Prince generally isn’t a confessional songwriter, he’s more of a storyteller. So Dorothy Parker doesn’t exist. It’s a story about Prince’s idea for an ideal woman: beautiful and smart. But he appears to have found her while in a bad relationship with another woman because he mentions arguing with a lover and “kinda going with someone”. But he likes her so much he changes his mind and wants to be with her, yet she just flirts and plays hard to get. I think the “she didn’t see the movie because she hadn’t read the book” line is saying metaphorically she turned down his sex advances because she didn’t get to know him. But in the end he respects her for it. The “Violent Room” line is kind of confusing, I think maybe he’s talking about living in a bad relationship maybe?

Prince – Sign O' The Times Lyrics 16 years ago
A great song with Prince viewing late 80s society as nearing the apocalypse. But the song is unfortunately still relevant (maybe even more so) today. The entire album is in my opinion a concept about late-80s life, when the good times died, finances hurt, people feared world war, and retreated into meaningless sex and drugs to try to escape. So, yeah, pretty much it's not that much different than 2007.

The "big disease with a little name" is obviously AIDS, which at the time the song was written (1986) was still somewhat of a mystery due to it being so unexpected and people having problems distinguishing reality from myth on it. Must have been especially scary for our favorite sex addict Prince.

The teenage Disciples gang refers to the Chicago-based Gangster Disciples gang, which reeked havoc on the city in the 80s and 90s, making Chicago the murder capitol of the US for a lot of years.

The Rocket Ship exploding refers to the Challenger explosion where a schoolteacher who trained to be an astronaut died along with several others.

"Baby make a speech, Star Wars fly" is talking about then-President Ronald Reagan and his Star Wars missile defense shield in outer space during the Cold War. It turned out to be a huge bluff, but possibly prevented nuclear war with Russia.

The ending verse is just a wish to try to enjoy life while you can, and just ignore the bad times. A definite late-80s sign o' the times. Prince is a great lyricist when he wants to be. Unfortunately he spends most of his songs obsessing about sex. That's fine once in a while, but songs like this show he is way too talented to be so low brow all of the time.
