This song is 2 lines + Fire Lets not over analyze the meaning of about 30 words repeated for 3 minutes. IMO this song describes the mindset of Donald Draper in Mad Men about women. He loves the one he married, he loves the ones he's slept with and left behind too. How can he possibly be guilty for loving them so well when the women never stop forming the line in wait for him? |

This song is about EGO. He's no different than anybody else. He just wants to be first. That's it. He isn't talking about wanting to love her forever and take care of her. He knows that he's the best and wants first crack at her. Actually the song isn't even gender specific lol. |

This song is pretty easy to understand but some are reading too much into it. She was so in love with him and he can't understand how he doesn't "own" her anymore. The relationship was too easy for him but that's what he considers love. (Maybe he's incapable of loving back) He was resigned to stay in the relationship because it was effortless on his part but it made him lonely and sad therefore he wasn't upset when it ended. The "sadness" that he was addicted to was the fact that he could do whatever he wanted and still be in complete control of her. Now he can't deal with the fact that she actually moved on. She realizes what happened. He screwed her over, made her believe it was her own doing. Why would she want him in her life anymore? He doesn't get it. The dude is more than likely narcissistic. |

To me it sounds like he had a relationship with someone wonderful to him when he was younger and she was there for him, and listened to it all but he broke it off because he was young and nieve, looking for something like we all are. She was his soulmate and he chose to leave her behind to follow his ambitions, but those ambitions left him alone with no one to talk to. After that the song begins: "All that time I was searching, nowhere to run to, it started me thinking, Wondering what I could make of my life, and who'd be waiting, Asking all kinds of questions, to myself, but never finding the answers, Crying at the top of my voice, and no one listening" He misses her presence and the fact that no one is listening to his feelings but later we will see that he is still to busy with himself to commit to her now. She doesn't like it either since he came running back to her. I can understand this from a star, 100%. He is too busy and playing with his band. He can't commit to her now but she's pissed off and leaving. He doesn't know why because he is the man and she left anyway.
