Lou Reed – The Bells Lyrics

I've seen an interview with Lou where he's explaining this one, and it basically amounts to: it's the motherfucking bells! |

Wire – Three Girl Rhumba Lyrics

The first time I took acid, this song was playing just before it came on...made a lot of sense. Boxes, numbers, infinity...ah, I dunno. A lot of post-punk stuff (paticularly Wire and Talking Heads) seems to have elements of examining the LSD experience from a more realist perspective than 60's/70's psychedelia. |

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Mushroom Lyrics

Cover of a classic Can song. Bobby Gillespie, who was the drummer for the JAMC at the time, talks about this in the remastered liner notes of Can's "Tago Mago". |

Frank Zappa – Uncle Remus Lyrics
|
This is a sad song as essentially it means that the black people have become so defeated that they don't even mind being "sprayed with a hose" and take pleasure from small victories like knocking racist statues off rich people's lawns. |

Public Image Ltd. – Religion Lyrics

I don't think Johnny's talking about a church with 12 people, he's more talking about the "hypocrites who hide inside" - church administration and so on. Brilliant song. |

Foetus – Sick Man Lyrics

Apparently about Nick Cave - reminds me of Cave's own "Scum", especially the murderous ending. |

Killing Joke – Requiem Lyrics

Apocalyptic stuff. Reminds me a bit of the BBC Drama "Threads" (the most disturbing thing ever made, some say) - this was earlier, mind you.
Considering this album came out as Britain went into particularly dark times (Thatcherism just around the corner) its quite paranoid and sounds like everything has broken down. |

Throbbing Gristle – Five Knuckle Shuffle Lyrics

Yep. Added to that I think Genesis is quite anti drinking (except as opening up the mind or whatever) so its probably about some hick getting a handjob from a prostitute when drunk. |

Warren Zevon – Ain't That Pretty at All Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
"I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all" - everyone should be able to relate to this. What's worth, sadness/pain/etc. or nothingness? I think the former. |

Warren Zevon – Mohammed's Radio Lyrics
|
Mohammed being an inspirational figure to the Muslims - the religion is irrelevant (it isn't about religion) it could be anyone, just an inspirational figure. The fact its radio shows how updated they are.
Then again, there's a lot of sadness in the song, and maybe that's what the title means: it is just that, a radio. No real hope. |

Big Black – Big Money Lyrics

Cops - nothing to do with justice, just doing it to get paid. Someone in that position without a code of ethics is *very* dangerous. |

Big Black – Stinking Drunk Lyrics

Destructive, consuming nature of alcohol, specifically alcoholism - "Been so long" and then pushed over the edge. "Stinking" drunk indeed. |

Big Black – Fists of Love Lyrics

I think ratanx is right, its about both - sexuality and violence coming together in the one act. Reminds me of an early Swans track a lot. |

Big Black – Kerosene Lyrics

I think any of us that have lived in the sticks can relate to this song. Having always had a good family I've never been pushed into the situation this song describes, but its never been far away. And I've seen a lot of people that this song describes. |

Big Black – Bad Houses Lyrics
|
Probably referring to visiting a prostitute/brothel on a superficial level but, looking deeper, its about something that we don't want to like, shouldn't like, but do - a perversion we try to stop ourselves from but can't. Chilling. |
