Radiohead – Down Is the New Up Lyrics 17 years ago
Watch the politcians... they're like jocks tripping over themselves in order to promise whatever wants to be heard by the virgin public's ear and so make them swoon - in order to get WHAT THEY WANT... Just you watch! Once we hand over our (deceived) hopes to them, they'll dump us like trash because politics is an abusive relationship! They say they're for us only to get elected and once elected, they're really only for those helped fund their elections. Meanwhile we're left scratching our heads... fools - fools all around...

Sounds like a drug song BUT !... It's really about the "poison" drug of political power... PS "Little Red Book" for those who don't know references the Red Book of Mao's Communist China... during Vietnam, many protester activists looked to the Red Book as an alternative to the obvious abuse of US power... funny thing, Mao was a mass murderer in his own right, sending his country's doctors to work in the fields only to die, and much worse....

Bar none - politics is never the answer to our problems... yet neither is ideology... too bad we're always stuck having to decide between two flavors of useless Bland, Inc.... All hail the Puppetmasters and their weak-minded pawns!!! Consume more adverts!!! Wage war on drugs or Mexicans!!! It's all the fault of somebody else! Don't blame us, we're the Incarceration KING! The Great American Insurance Military Dow Industrial Complex Inc. will clutch us safe to it's cold mannequin breast!!! Prescribe us your state sponsored soma 'cause we can't watch anymore. Program us, please!!!! Freedom is a sin and the State is my friend!!!! I quit, you win, sign me up for you stupid wars!!!!!!!!

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 17 years ago
We all agree the song concerns a man reviewing his love in retrospect... I highly doubt it's due to suicide - that's more the listener's imposition... Rather, I think this song is concerned with the lover's hope that his love and positive efforts are an ultimate force for good and that the Universe may judge him fairly for it.

It's a prayer or meditation that his love will in some way be eternally recorded by and echoed throughout a sympathetic Universe. It is a karmic prayer for forgiveness and understanding.

Who is watching this videotape anyway, in an age of DVD's no less? In essence, we are all memories that fade as generations pass. Yet we all relate to the hope that the positive things we contribute, experience and offer unto Life will somehow reverberate and carry on beyond us.

It's purposefully phrased to make us reflect on our own morbidity and, more importantly, the positive emanations we should strive and hope to leave behind. Yet the song also understands that no matter how great one's hope the destiny of the Universe is determined by a force greater than individual hope... Indeed, it is a construct of collective aspirations and ambitions of which our contribution is only a part.

Love, give and pray. Let's learn.

Genesis – Supper's Ready Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song is the story of "right versus wrong" as has been described by other posters nor do I think it pushes a Christian religious agenda either... I think it's a study of Transformation and Struggle (on the micro, macro and interpersonal levels), and the realizing that we are all Inputs - yet individually subject to – a great swinging pendulum which we contribute to, yet can never control. Gabriel witnesses Jill’s trip/possession – (the inspiration for the song) which inspires him to explore the way we are all "possessed" on an/the individual level (read: victims) of the "alien” Self which seems to run the show (i.e. addiction, anger, societal and familiar pressures, warfare, etc.).

The song is the study/conversation of opposing Yin-Yang forces which is very different from the West's GOOD-BAD judgment - it's not religious in a traditional Western sense, though the song references Western religion. These guys are fairly young (not even 30), and they want to discuss heavy subjects in the vernacular most significant to them as a band brought up in a conservative 1950's Christian culture.

Gabriel understands that the Individual is itself a battleground between great opposing forces. It honestly desires innocence, peace, personal freedom, escape from corruption, free-will on its own terms (Narcissus turns into a flower) yet - though this part of us reaches desperately and futilely out to the Great - we are helplessly/continually overwhelmed by a power greater than ourselves (upbringing, culture, history, time, progress, profit, etc.) to which we contribute though never control. We can not help but be an echo of our heritage. The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Landmark is a mirage, a diversion – yet remains a personally timeless aspiration for individuals struggling to realize its power in their lives and by doing so improve the world. It is a fight that Life has programmed and instilled in all of us.

Radiohead – Bodysnatchers Lyrics 17 years ago
A real understanding of Radiohead's world view (Weltanschauung) depends on a familiarity with the dualist religious heresy of Gnosticism.

Indeed, in my opinion, Thom is a modern day musical version of the 16th Century artistic genius Hieronymus Bosch: Life is an absurd negotiation between the corrupt physical and the perfect spiritual.

The Gnostics teach that we were born cursed, entrapped as "sparks" of Holy Spirit in an imperfect and cursed physical body and that, in order to free one's Spirit, the individual Soul must struggle against the worldliness of pleasure and the false security of materiality for the sake of cleanliness and spiritual freedom.

If you desire to learn more about Radiohead's perception of the world, I recommend reading up on the 12th century French Cathar heresy and the Bogomils, etc. because - to a great degree - Radiohead represents a modern day dualist theology.

Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics 17 years ago
The gated-reverb sounding drums and slow-paced, purposeful vocals of Radiohead's live version is reminiscent of the tone heard on Peter Gabriel's excellent 3rd (un-named) album, 1980's "Melt" (specifically "Intruder"). Also, Thom's reiterative "It's all right, it's all wrong, it's all right," is reminiscent of Gabriel's world-weary, god-sounding voice 2/3rds through solo-Gabriel's honestly gorgeous "Humdrum" from his scatterbrained first solo album.

As we all know, Radiohead are quoted as "hating" progressive music, though the similarities, when they occur, are worth mentioning nonetheless - because I love both...

Please note that Thom's last line (in the live version at least) is "It's all right".... Despite his publicly admitted clinical depression (with which so many may relate), the man remains positive.

Let's learn!

Genesis – Squonk Lyrics 17 years ago
Supposedly the scuttle is that this song is in reference to Peter Gabriel who had decided to leave the band during the Lamb.

Any input?

I doubt very much that the band dis-regarded the man so much that they'd devote such a scathing song to an ex-member... but who knows how they felt?

Many fans think Gabriel was the brains behind the great (read: early 70's) Genesis but that is certainly not true, though he was undoubtedly an essential contributor. Frontmen often get too much credit from the public by virtue of their being the most immediate and in your face member. As much as I love the early Genesis, Gabriel bailed not only when he felt it right, but when the band had reached it's honest artistic apex. Everything that followed was "wish-it-were" followed by un-inspired parody followed by meaningless pop.

Radiohead's Coldplay song. Thought it was supposed to go the other way round? Regardless, this will likely be their "back to rock" album, which Thom had mistakenly judged HTTT to be... Not that there's anything wrong with that. I am definitely willing to bet that a couple of these songs will actually get some good Radioplay and put/keep the album on the charts and bring some newbies in. I'm assuming (?) that it's due to the BAND'S consistently playing/feeling out these songs live before the Official Release - as opposed to Thom and Johnny's composing them in some secret FruityLoops bunker as seemed the case with the last few (not that there was anything wrong with that!). With the solos out of the way, this record sees the return of the BAND again.

Also, on this album, I feel that Radiohead is at last doing laps through previously traveled waters... All bands - even the greatest (like my favorite: Radiohead) - ultimately reach a point at which their output is predictable and, in a way, a form of self-parody. Not that it's a Letdown or anything, because it happens with age and experience on both the personal and collective level. Name me an empire that hasn't fallen? ("From flesh to wood to sapless stone," as I once observed.)

Anyway - can't wait for the release - Radiohead is (literally) one of the few bands whose plastic coasters I will willingly pay $12 - $15.00.

God bless Radiohead...

Should either of them care.

Built to Spill – Else Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about realizing the way our unreasonably high standards have all this time alienated us from love... (What makes ME so much better than everyone else anyway?) I don't think it's about giving up on trying! - It's about coming to terms with the fact (for the first time) that he's fallen in love with someone (likely after some "booty calls") he'd never thought or expected he would... Sure, his lover isn't the perfect indie-rock fairytale princess (or whatever) he'd thought she should be but when it's happened, he has to LET GO and be open to it... He is finally learning the important life lesson that we have to work at love and that it's not just handed to us because we think we deserve it... and that love happens mysteriously and, sometimes, when we least expect it! Great song! :)
