I've always loved the way she sang this song. I usually play it a few times over and it gets stuck in my head (in the best way possible). Despite it being a sad song lyrically, it has an almost upbeat sound to it. There's so much optimism in her voice.
When the people we love can't be seen, all we have left are the objects that represented the relationship- wedding jewelry, photographs, letters. The beauty behind those objects lose their value- wedding rings simply become a band of gold. But she holds on to those items and stays hopeful that things will turn around. |

Blood is also one of my favorite songs. I feel what you mean about the lyrics being literal. I usually appreciate when lyrics are slightly vague and left open for interpretation. But the fact that this song is so literal makes it memorable. The Middle East sings those painful words with a very delicate approach and soft music to back it up. It's true to life, very real. It has the sound of optimism at the end which makes me feel like this person is at peace. Their body may have died but their soul lives on and will someday reunite with loved ones. It's beautiful. |

Random story: I first heard this song played on the touchtunes at my favorite dive bar. 2 "lady lovers" were really enjoying it as the night was winding down. While their PDA was enough to make me leave the room, I had to thank them for introducing me to such a phenomenal song.
The meaning is pretty straight forward- a scorned woman is singing to the person who hurt her. I think it's genius that she's esentially blaming the parents for raising the child the wrong way. After all, most people try to raise their children properly and kids want to make their parents proud. For someone to point out that a child was brought up the wrong way is one of the most sincere, genuine and perfect ways to express hurt and disappointment. It's nice to hear it put so simply and eloquently in a song. I love everything about this! |

I was a baby when this song was in heavy rotation on the radio, so I think my subconcious somehow remembers it. I love it and can listen to it on repeat and never get sick of listening. It has such a beautiful ryhtym.
I have a feeling it's about a couple that's dealing with people or circumstances that are trying to keep them from being together. Regardless of what it's actually about, I take away a lot of hope and optimism from this song. It conveys a message of never giving up and living life the way you want. It just meakes me feel good :)

I think this song is about living in Hollywood and resenting that whole LA culture. The National are from Ohio and are genuine. They have outgrown the silver screen starlets and all the facades. They want to move away, raise their children outside of the bubble and live a normal life. They mention not worrying about the weather- a big reason people stay in California (eluding to moving back East where the winters can be brutal).
This isn't about literal zombies or cannibalism. Conversation 16 conveys how living in a place like LA can eat at your brains and destroy you. The singer is saying he's already jaded and evil. He doesn't want his wife or children to be that way, so they are breaking out!
This is one of my favorite songs from High Violet. I was so fortunate to see The National twice last year & was very impressed.

One of my favorite songs of the past year. I searched forever to find it after hearing just a small snippet in Jessica Biel's Revlon commercial (directed by Kathryn Bigelow). I later heard it on Project Runway and Pretty Little Liars.
The meaning of this song is somewhat vague but what I take away from it is aknowledging the inevitable but living life to the fullest despite any negative circumstances.

This is one of my favorite songs of 2010. What I take away from "Walk in the Park" is how time has a way of changing everything- looks, relationships, the world in general. It's a very sad song.
As for "you want more"- it could be the person she is in a relationship with wants more from her but she is saying time is the only thing that possesses her. |

I can listen to this song on repeat and never get tired of it. Simply gorgeous.
I take the meaning of this song to be a man meets up with his pregnant wife/girlfriend at the blood bank to "give blood". His brother already did. It's likely to determine who the father of the child actually is. They both know the baby is not his but he loves the woman and accepts it. When a woman is pregnant, her face tends to swell ("I'm in love w/ your cheeks"). He's in love with her honor because she didn' have an abortion or leave him for his brother. After you give blood, you're given sweets ("chewing on a candy bar").
"I KNOW IT WELL"- He knows the child isn't his but children are gifts. Christmas is associated with presents- the creeks are the child getting up in the morning a few years later. The child is happy and the couple is still together despite the circumstances. |

This is the song that stands out most to me on "Congratulations". I like it.
MGMT is pretty twisted in logic but this song could refer to sex. The imagery reminds me a lot of the male anatomy. "Head attached with a scarf"... Condom?
The more I listen, the less I'm sure but that's what great about lyrics. You can interpret them any way you want. This could be about politics for all I know. I'm interested in reading what other people think.

I just heard this song through a commercial teaser for a TV show. Beautiful.
I think it describes unrequited love. The woman is in love with a man that she had a sexual relationship with but she stops herself from continuing it. 'Not being a stepping stone' doesn't really refer to him using her to get money or fame but rather him using her for sex then moving on to the next 'stone' or woman in line.
I'm so glad they are bringing back artists that actually have talent. Reminds me of the good stuff from the '60s :) |

Because this song has so many similarities to the Rumi poem, I would say that it is about realization. The time when you have an epiphany and wake up to what life is really about. You don't take pleasure in material things and live life for what is it meant for... love. At that point it is like "staring in the sun." (Seeing the universe on a much larger scale). You can gain this perspective thru many different situations. "In pain or ecstacy" (when you face death/find love). I do notice a lot of sexual references in the song but to me that is just illustrating the point of cleansing your thought process (orgasm/clear mind). |

LOVE this song. It puts you in a relaxed mood. Beautiful piece of music. I agree with formicula. The best line is 'does anybody have a clue how hard I worked at loving you.' Simple song about loving someone but knowing it just isn't meant to be. His reason is that he isn't himself around her. This situation happens a lot when people come from different backgrounds or are at different spots in their lives. They try to change themselves to make it work but it just isn't true. |

I'm not a big fan of country music but Kenny Chesney is really talented. I love this song. It takes you away and puts you right where the story is set.
Simply put, this song is about first loves. Summer flings. Feeling close to someone you have only known for a short period of time. The inevitability that you will be torn apart. Despite being separated, always having that feeling of being together at heart.
For some reason, this song makes me sad. It makes me think of someone losing a friend or loved one at a young age. As a Pittsburgher, Cleveland is about the farthest thing I can corelate with 'heaven' (no offense) but that is the way I like to see this song. |

It really is a beautiful song. The singer's voice is what makes it so terrific.
I think he is basically saying that he hasn't seen the person he loves in a long time and he wants to see her again but not just for a short visit- but forever. Perhaps she went away for school, work or just to move away. He wants her to come back home.
It could also be understood to mean 'California' as their relationship... he wants her to come back to him. Seeing as the band is from Atherton, CA I am assuming the song is meant to be taken literally. |

This is a Ringside original (Enrique later covered it and released it in Europe).
I feel like the songwriter is referring to moon itself when he is talking about what is following him. When you travel and continue to look at the moon there is the illusion that it is moving right along with you or 'following you' in a sense.
He is saying that all the world has given up on him but the moon is still there night after night when he goes out and continues to self-destruct. The reason for his unhappiness is because he did something wrong and hurt the person he loves (perhaps as suggested on here a relationship with a junkie or prostitute). He wants a life beyond partying (moon/night) and something substantial. He wants to get back to the person he loves but he feels all alone and she is as far away as the moon. |

Purple is the color of good judgment. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind.
I read some description years ago (can't remember where) that said Heaven has 7 levels, and each level has a corresponding color. When each level blends into the other, the color is so bright, it looks like it's raining that color onto the level below. Purple is supposedly the corresponding color of the seventh and highest level, where God sits. So if your soul reaches the 6th level (the highest a human can go) then you will be "laughing/bathing" in purple rain.
'Purple Rain' is a continuation to the judgement day theme from '1999':
"when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was Judgment Day. The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere. Tryin' 2 run from the destruction..."
The sky in '1999' is purple becuz of the bombs, and the bombing is what makes the rain purple afterwards, the rain is 'cleaning' all the pain and suffering the bombing caused...
'I only want 2 see U in the purple rain' means something like 'I wanna see U in a world after the war/ judgement day'...

I think this song is about a beautiful girl who is physically out of a boy's league. However- he is extremely deep and more of an intellect. So in a sense, they are out of each other's leagues. Yet they try and make it work by 'meeting each other half way' (him 'deep' under the sea, her on land... they meet at the 'surface'). It just doesn't work in the end. |

I just heard this song for the first time. The video was on MTV. I really like it! The song is great and the video was pretty cool as well. The sound is unique. It has a club/techno vibe to it which is very cool mixed with the hip hop.
I think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious but to me I feel it is about a man who misses an old girlfriend. He knows it should be over but he wants her back- he wants her in one way or another (short term, long term?). Everything reminds him of her and he hopes that they get back together.

I think this song is basically about an old friend reappearing later in life and that friendship turning into a romance. The love is indescribale- not planned but perfect.

However, dreams usually mean something that relates to your subconcious. From the lyrics and melody of the music, I would guess that the person experiencing this type of dream is afraid of being captured/tied down in a relationship and likes to be in control. |
