I'm a Seattle kind of guy, musically. I like many other stuff though: Tool, The Mars Volta, post-metal, P.OD...

This song is........let's say it's perfect for all the reasons.

Audioslave – Light My Way Lyrics 4 years ago
First, Cornell has never been religious and wrote quite many songs against it!
Also, remembering "Like a Stone" as a reference and comparison, I cannot believe even for a moment that the whole album as meant to be understood without a closer look.
On this track he sings of something or someone important, that offers guidance and solace. This is for sure, everything else is not.

The meaning of the song is basically this, everything else is personal and open to interpretation.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Behold! The Night Mare Lyrics 8 years ago
This song greatly reminds me of the most special person of my life, or the only special person actually.
Her personality changed so drastically, she is pretty much another person now. Or someone who passed away.

Even if I keep living my life, meeting new people, having new memories and relationships; there is always something that make me feel I am digging roses from her grave. Every once in a while I am haunted.
True love is hard to describe in words as it is so wonderful, but it can also be something like a curse.

Mastodon – Tread Lightly Lyrics 8 years ago
This can be about addiction and drugs, but just like Alice In Chains songs and Tool's "Stinkfist", it has a deeper meaning.

This chorus is one the best ones I ever heard, and it reminds me of something in life that could metaphorically be compared to a coma. Causes by a trauma or depression, you wake up after many years and ask yourself: "Where have I been all this time?"

The Smashing Pumpkins – Appels + Oranjes Lyrics 8 years ago
Appels = calls (phone) in French. Oranjes = Oranges in Dutch.

I suppose it was something Corgan was doing a few moments before or after he wrote the lyrics for this song. Something to feel better, maybe?

To me, this is simply a song about losing the will to live. He asks himself how the world would be if nature itself felt like he feels.

This is one of my favorite Hüsker Dü songs, easily. And it seems the band members used to like this song as well.

I love the harmony of the two voices in this one. I feel it is about a lady who seeks her own independence. It also seems to be about her relation with her family, and how she changed.

Hüsker Dü – Could You Be The One? Lyrics 8 years ago
While it could be about Mould's homosexuality, I feel it is about love in general and could apply to any of us.

"It doesn't mean that much to me
Sometimes I don't mean that much to you"

He is talking about a person he loves or thinks might be the right one for you, and he ponders if that person is actully going to make him happy.

Alice in Chains – Shame In You Lyrics 8 years ago
This is the ultimate Alice In Chains hidden gem, and it is so beautiful...
I just wonder why they didn't play this in the Unplugged, instead of "Angry Chair". Maybe they tried and didn't like how "Shame in You" sounded acoustic?
In my opinion, it would fit perfectly. The entire song is a wonderful poem.

I don't have much to add to the interpretation of the lyrics, but I want to say that "I believe in inner peace" sounds so powerful at the end.

Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should've Come Over Lyrics 9 years ago
I always thought "Diamond Sea" by Sonic Youth was an extremely romantic song, until I heard this one. The ultimate love song to me, for sure.

Another song that greatly reminds me of the love person I ever loved.
We had a pure and platonic love, without passion. I never felt any passion by her, and only after years since we first met I realized we had such deep and strong feelings for each other.
It was so powerful and natural, it is almost like our souls reside together, fused, united, inside both of us.

This song is not necessarily about ruining a perfect relationship like many of you think. In my opinion, soul mate doesn't mean staying together until the end. This is about missing a soul mate for whatever reason.
He sings "it is never over" because the love will remain inside him forever. Hibernating most of the time, but always there; forever. He will always miss her, and no one will ever fill that void.

"She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever."

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 9 years ago
System of a Down had to change the name, afterwards they seemed to prefer the fans to have their own interpetration. In the first years, listening to this song, I thought it could be about many things. Now more and more it clearly seems to be about the genocide the Christians suffered in the Ottoman Empire.

The first part can be both about the survivors and the perpetrators, both hiding something.
The survivors had to go on with their lives, and they might have tried to hide their pain, like Turkey still tries to hide this ever happened.
Scars and makeup.

The comparison with suicide makes much sense because they died for who they were, and who they still are. So in a way it's a choice, at least in such twisted situations. They choose not to change, even if this means death.
Very sad actually, even more in the part about angels deserving to die.

I feel strange towards the song title, as it's something they eat. So it's disgusting to compare this to how people died, like choped and suicide (chop suey). But again, might have been just another form of hiding the real meaning for something subtle.
Besides all this, it's a dish made by immigrants, like them, who also suffered a genocide perpetrated by Japan.

Not only the Christians suffered a genocide, the Yezidis also got persecuted and killed 100 years ago, like happens today with the Islamic State.
And the Christians were not only the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks, but also the Bulgarians in Batak.

God bless them all, and may the Assyrians have their country back!

Black Sabbath – Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener Lyrics 9 years ago
I cannot say this is one of the most special Sabbath songs, because is a matter of taste and identification; but I would say it's a hidden gem.

And I don't agree this is a bitter song. Instrumentally, it sounds kinda joyous. Maybe because the song is nostalgic, so there was happiness somewhere.

It's a song about a phase in your life when you actually had real friends, someone to love and who loved you, at least one thing to do that would make you feel alive.
When you have very different experiences in your life, you may ask yourself which ones were real: "Was an illusion?".
People always talk about "reality" as something cold and harsh.

Silverchair – Israel's Son Lyrics 9 years ago
Oldest pro Palestine song I know.

To me, the most interesting part of the lyrics are this one: "I hate you and your apathy
You can leave you can leave
I don't want you here "

Occupation of the Palestinian lands.

This part is wrong, by the way: "Over pain I fear you
You'll then start to hear you
Over an hour, I get to"

The correct is "All the pain I feel, couldn't start to heal, although I would like it to".

Soundgarden – Somewhere Lyrics 9 years ago
A love song.

This is one of my favorite songs by Soundgarden.

The first verse is quite catchy I would say.

"I wish a wish I dream to dream
I try to try and I live to live
And die to die and I cry to cry
But I know why"

He says his actions and his life feel pointless and automatic, but at the same time that, in his inner world, he is dying to live a true life.
He just wants and even needs this too much.

The other lines are more clear, in my opinion.
Musically speaking, my favorite part by far is this: "For times that pass my life
I'll search for the sky
That she wonders by".

The Smashing Pumpkins – Saturnine Lyrics 9 years ago
I love the Machina version. Sounds like somewhere between Soundgarden and My Bloody Valentine.

This song greatly reminds me of someone. To me is clearly about a saturnine woman.
Dark, lonely, sad. He loves her: "how i'd love to waste your time".

The lyrics often mention unhappiness and someone trying to overcome problems. "Always cried", "Waiting a sign", "Wreckage is outside",
"We're hereby forgotten", "We are losing mind".

Some lines show conflicts, internal or external. Wich is also a sign of why they cannot be together.

This song is a lamentation.

The most obscure line of all, to me, is "we are inside".
What could that mean? Maybe only inside themselves love can be fulfilled. Or maybe inside is a safe and peaceful place, where they can rest their souls. Maybe rest together, or at least feel they are close to each other.

Impossible love is always extremely angelical and extremely sad....

The Mars Volta – Viscera Eyes Lyrics 10 years ago
Reading again I think the last part really might be about Mary Magdalene.

"Wait! I've seen the ark shake from your pneumonic tongue
But the braile that you weave of itself it shall read aloud
Yes it will
I said, she's falling, she's still falling
But no one wants to come
She's crawling, she's still crawling
On your burial ground
Said, she's falling, she's still falling
But no one wants to come
I said, she's crawling, she's still crawling
On your burial"

It is said that the others lost their faith after Jesus died. All except Mary Magdalene, who also was one of the apostles.

Also the person who said viscera also is a the plural of the Latin word for viscus is right. But the meaning still is organ.

"Aye, mi hijo, no me llores
porque te qito de esta cruz
Ni agachate vi caminado sin la alma de tu cuerpo
En los brazos sin luz"

This part seems to be about Mary, the Virgin.

"They scalp our children by seven
The border we're watching
Where the other three now hide
The culprits can't be seen from a premium of glass
We shudder in this sigil then you carpe diem-tize"

This also reminds me of the crucification. The other 3 might be the 3 women who stayed with Jesus after his death: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome. The other 3 may be a reference to the Holy Trinity?

For the first time "viscera eyes" seems a different metaphor. As this is about how the women kept their faith in Jesus after all the others left him after his death, ins't possible that a viscera eye is something like a vagina?
A vagina as a symbol of the women and their role in Christianity and their spiritual vision.
I know this is rather Toolish than any of the usual Volta metaphors, but even talking about this, the third eye in drawings (including Alex Grey's ones) always seemed similar to a vagina to me, in shape. By coincidence or not.

This song is almost happy compared to the others in the album, and I wonder why.
I has always been my favorite, for the solos and Cedric's final shouts in the end.

I think the woman/girl of the lyrics are probably Sarah (Jesus' daughter), his mother and Mary Magdalene.

Also, by coincidence, this article was just published today. So I will post the link here: http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/03/30/mary-magdalene-was-never-a-prostitute/

The Mars Volta – Cut That City Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is very well-written.

Cedric is criticising the US for the foreign policy by also using the competition with Japan against them. He calls New York as "NeoTokyo" not only because of that but because Tokyo means capital of East, wich is what New York is, whilst Washington is the Western capital.

"This marabout isn't untouchable
Indentured by servitude"
This is particularly interesting because untouchable is the lowest social class in India, but marabout is a Muslim religious leader. This is about Pakistan.

The first lines are the most obscure to me.
"Neonecropopulace has no reflection
Neocaeczaristic phallic ruins"

Cedric seems to compare USA and Russia not only for imperialism and crimes, but also because they ruin mostly Muslim countries.

I am not sure about reflection and neonecropopulace.

I also do not understand "Neopolygraphic, trip chords" but it seems to be about Polygraphic substitution.

The Mars Volta – Eunuch Provocateur Lyrics 10 years ago
This is the only song they wrote I could never quite undertand neither even have a clue about the true meaning.
If I were Cedric and Omar, I would see two songs entirely separated and would try to find links between the two themes.
As the themes of inquisition, pureness, purification and so on are quite more clear, I will talk only about how this song is supposed to match "Cut that City".

There is emphasis on the first lines because of the silence after them.
"The Al Sirat hides behind
A wardrobe of eunuchs
Seconds collide
Till the Padisha scandal"

The Al-Sirat to me, in the lyrics, are not the path to paradise of Islam; but a metaphor to what the US government seek in the Muslim world. The wardrobe of eunuchs maybe is a way to metion the territory of those who are supposed to be pure. Noticed how many references this lyrics have to drugs and sex.

The next two lines always got my attention more than any other lines.
Padisha or Padishah is a title that was usual in the Ottoman Empire and also Iran, as far as I know.
To this interpretation, the most interesting obviously is Iran, even more followed by the word "scandal". I really think they are saying that a war against Iran would be like the Iraq invasion. Another shameful scandal.

The next line is the most obscure and open to interpretation to me, with really says a lot: "The cauldrons have eyes"
Cauldrons can have various simbolisms. Luckily, the other phrase ("By way of racket and vice") shows this might be about the West and it's negative traits.
Most parts of those lyrics, to me, are similar to lines such as "Tore the wings off, Seraphin".
My bet would be that one society sees another like the Christian societies saw the Pagan beliefs. The cauldron is a symbol of Wicca, Celtic Mythology and so on. I do know cauldron could mean plenty of other things, and it's etymology from Classical Latin is caldārium, wich means "hot bath" and could lead to other interpretations. But I really think in this case, the image of Paganism is immediate.
Still, even if is supposed to be mutual, know how Omar and Cedric feel about USA; this certainly is another criticism towards the Western society and how the mentality and behaviour "by way of racket and vice", and how without even noticing, everyone sees things through the eyes of vice.

"These nasty sores of Ataxia
Will feel the sting
Of the opiate copulation"

Another lines that convey the same message, in my opinion. Ataxia can happen due to drug consumption.
The next part is the most clear, and yet the most interesting. Opiate copulation might be a reference to the Western involvement in drug production and traffic, specially in Afghanistan. And how this will come back against the United States, one way or another.

I tried in vain to come with at least anyhints on "Now that the Provoste
Has been de - frocked ", but I have no idea.

This song is unlike all other Salt songs, in my opinion.
As I teen I remember listening to all Veruca Salt albums with Nina, without paying attention to the song names. Then this song would start playing and I would ask myself "what was that? Wait...lavender flowers?" .
Also usually and specially in the Seattle scene, the chourus is when the song explodes. And this song has the most sweet and heavenly chorus I ever heard. I only wish it could be a bit longer to enjoy more all the angels floating nearby.

Temple of the Dog – All Night Thing Lyrics 10 years ago
This song really seems one of those songs created to appear to be about something else. Like other Cornell songs such as "Like a Stone" wich seems to be about love but would probably really be about waiting death.
"All Night Thing" is too romantic to be about a one night stand. If this is not that great metaphor about Andrew, my guess is that it is about a couple that is separated living in different countries or any other situation and try to enjoy every second together before the departure.

About things a bit more subjective, I am not a synesthete but usually songs make me think of colours and this is the only song of all that make me think of yellow.
Not even the Cold Play song with this title is listened as a yellow song, to me.
I would say this means I consider this a simple and yet, very special song. Wich kinda reminds me of Mad Season "All Alone".

It seems to be about the others as most of the lyrics are in third person. And even the first person last lines seem to be about other people.

Might be about becoming colder because everyone else is, or how strange cold people appear to be for the ones more emotional and sensitive, looking to feel alive and to interact with others.
Another interpretation that is somewhat related to the first one (becoming cold) is about a person that is not any cold, but really wants to be, to stop suffering.

I know this song is about Andy, but....always when I hear this and specially the chorus.......this is....the perfect...anthem for a dreamer. For thinking of the better for humankind, for pure things, ideals, pure feelings.
Feels that, when he says "If you believed they put a man on the moon" he is talking about everything humankind is capable of, but not only science-wise.

Not a fan of R.E.M, but as a dreamer, this song hits me as hell. Love it.

The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics 11 years ago
As far as I know, the IRA tried to avoid civillian casualities, for many reasons.
One is because they were afraid of losing people's support, the other is that they KNEW they would inflict damage to their own country and people, wheter is Northern Ireland or Éire. Specially since republicans reject vehemently the division.

Even trying, they could not avoid casualities entirely. But the Brittish never did much about it, despite previous comments. Never ,never were peacemakers, they stayed in the island to protect their interests, not to protect the Northern Irish.
Events like the Irish Famine or the famous Bloody Sunday are clear examples of how the Brittish acted upon Irish people.
AND, despite OTHER comments about people nowadays carring this hatred in the past, much goes on the same way today, mostly in Northern Ireland.
People getting into jail for supporting (peacefully) the republicanism, protesting against the United Kingdom.
They are locked away without hope, for no reason besides expressing an opinion that bothers a lot. The loyalists are scarred as hell.

Also, don't forget that deaths were caused not only by IRA, but by paramilitary groups formed by loyalists, too.
People in the Celtic Nations do use things and eat food from England, but this can be made in all the countries, or just bought. One of the reasons to the division exist is the money from England. There is nothing noble in rejecting your own identity and selling yourself for money you could get otherwise.

This song is pretty neutral about the conflict and is very hard to me to detect any opinion favoring one of the sides. In fact, most of the beauty of the song comes from this. The song is to the innocents trying to keep going during the war.

The problem with the words like "tanks" can be just interpretation.
Yes, tanks were not used in Ireland, but I think maybe the war is in the heads, like she sings: "With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head in your head".

And then the part "they are crying/dying". War is all in your head, while innocents lives are wiped out of our country. How can you be a zombie and not to give a damn about it all?

All criticism about IRA is pretty easy to understand, but is not correct to compare with them to the English.
They had a huge empire in many countries. The personality of their politicians, and of the crown still carries this legacy of tyranny and domination.

Iggy Pop – Little Know It All Lyrics 12 years ago
I heard this song in the clip of the cage and the road. Thought it was only Iggy Pop and then found it was with Sum 41.
WTF?!
I found weird before, that this song sounds more "modern" than I'm used to hear from other Iggy songs.

Anyway, Feliciano2040 said well, but is a very short answer.
It seems about how people naturally have two sides and you are only able to see one and also about how things can be turned inside out after some time.
I've never been a huge Iggy fan to be honest, but I remember a girl telling me he was the dexter guy, doing everything right. After some experiences, he started to be that guy rolling over broken glass...
And both ones are real, but you only see one side and believes that's all you have to know about him.

This lyrics seem to be also, much about this: "I live a life I never chose".
"And I feel like
I'm sleeping when I'm not

Looking for the real thing".

How can you even dream with the life you want if you walk underneath a blanket?
Like, there is a whole world inside begging to just pop out and explode and there is no sight of chance for that to happen?

Great lyrics, great song! Can relate to this 100%!
Cheers!

A Perfect Circle – A Stranger Lyrics 12 years ago
Even if the album is about addiction, this is used as a metaphor to other situations and relationships.
And this song might be the best example.

Personally, I always think of a relationship that grows a bit....faster than it should. Not because any part of the relation acts rashly, but because it happens naturally that way.
I trying to say this is when you fall in love quickly with a person that STILL is a stranger.

"To convince you it's all right"
When you try to convince yourself or the other half that the feelings are real.

"While I formulate denials
Of your effect on me".
"I'm better off without you
Tearin' my will down".

All those lines are about denial. When there is indecision and hesitation, you try to convince yourself that you both are better to stay away from each other and keep your lives. But you try to put yourself in that state of mind because you don't want to admit (even to yourself) that you really are in love and maybe is just impossible.

Footnotes: This song have always been one of my favorites, sounds like the acoustic guitar is been played at the top of a mountain, with a wonderful view to be seen, far from everything. I don't know other song with the same feeling.

Love A Perfect Circle.

Pearl Jam – You Are Lyrics 12 years ago
This song clearly is about love, but I could only understand this after feeling love for the first time.

"sometimes I burn like a dot on the sun" - This is about the suffering that every love has. It is not easy to love so much to the point of feeling pain. You want to be close to that person, no matter what.

"you are a tower, of strength to me" - Love gives you strenght and pain at the same time. You abide by love, try to gather forces from it, even if it is the same thing that makes you suffer.

"this broken wheel is coming undone
and the road's exploding"

I love those lines because sometimes you feel that everything is going down and even yourself don't know what kind of hope you should have. Love might be the only one, but sometimes to have hope is to live somewhat far from reality.

The point of the lines "love is a tower" seems like...a something so distant. It makes you higher but far away from everything else. Maybe even from the beloved one.

The instrumental part of this song is unique, the guitar effects...

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is not about drugs or sex. Both are only metaphors.

It is about, in my opinion, about something nearly everyone can feel related to.
As Tool members are into cinema, you can think about famous films like "Matrix" or "Vanilla Sky".
This is about everything you want in life and just can have, even if you reach you get a fake plastic version from that.
The more you lack something real, the more you compensate with drugs or sex, or love or your work, or money...or whatever.

"It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive"

You feel like a stranger in your land, without anyone real aroud you and without feelings and thoughts you used to have. Anesthetized. Without love, a true love, without deep conversations...Everything is made out of plastic.
Yoo can feel that living in a small town, with the wrong girlfriend/boyfriend or even with yourself.

"Something has to change"

This could be about something that is not a relationship. But this is what we have in our lives, almost everyone of us, so this is what we think when listen to songs like this.
"I will choke until I swallow
Choke this infant here before me
What are you but my reflection?
Who am I to judge or strike you down?"

He is trying to suffocate his childish personality for the good of the relation. But he blames her (reflection), or just thinks she is just like him and that makes him make the same mistakes.

I don't have time to work this lyrics in a deep way, but all the lyrics from the start to the end seems to be about fearing the pain there is in every relantionship and not letting all happen untill the end, making this stop unfinished. AH! there is, both part are that way, for different reasons.

My favorite track off of the album. This surely is not about sex, you think it's about that because this is on your mind, not in the lyrics.
This is about infancy, about having a secret hideout, a place that only you know.
The boys carry their head down thinking, imagining things, they are pure, happy and peaceful.
The girls who don't like 'anything there' make me think it is relative to some sort of a boys hideout, a child gang!

Cat Power – Metal Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
This reminds me a lot of myself.

losing a star without a sky
losing the reasons why
you're losing the calling, you've been faking
and I'm not kidding

You only have a star, a true and honest love if you have a sky. And this love you lose, no matter how self-sufficient you might want to feel, this love is your 'reasons why'.

it's damned if you don't and it's damned if you do
be true 'cause they'll lock you up in a sad sad zoo
oh hidy hidy hidy what're you trying prove?
by hidy hidy hiding you're not worth a thing

No matter what you do, you feel that you will end up hurted. But if you want to be happy you got to try, risk yourself, let fear and that armored heart of yours fade away.
When you hide yourself from yourself and from others you're trying to change, to prove you can. prove to yourself and maybe to others as well.
But you should be honest to be less judged, or to not care about it, in that zoo. You cannot live with your heart close, it's not what you might call a life.

sew your fortunes on a string
and hold them up to light
blue smoke will take a very violent flight
and you will be changed

A string, like the string from the guitar? Blue smoke, like in a gig? Sounds like it's about herself, but it's very open to other interpretations also, of course. The string of destiny maybe, the string that shakes and you shake with it and you feel you will fall, all the time.
That lifestyle, that shell is changing you violently. And no matter how hard you try not to end up like this, seems inevitable (it's damned if you don't and it's damned if you do).

I see this song as a song without a real chorus, but if there's any, it's this part:
I once was lost but now I'm found
was blind but now I see you
how selfish of you
to believe in the meaning of all the bad dreaming

So powerful, so true, so much from the real inside of us.. of her. Now that you've found yourself, that was so foolish thinking that things would never change, so foolish and so selfish, like you're the only one with troubles, like none of the others around you care.

It's very hard but the heart of people should be wide open as they pursue for something, for a relationship, for what they do. This song would even exist without that.

we all become
what we most dislike

i heard something like that before , it's said that you can change depending the way people see you , or what you use to fight against ..

'the dragon killer is a dragon too'.

At the Drive-In – Proximus Centauri Lyrics 16 years ago
some time has passed.. i think i know what this is about..

'Nero has conquered the stars
No one ever saw the spacesuit togas
A wreath around the head
Like saturn's rings'

here , the roman empire is a metaphor to... the american 'empire'..
Cedric sings about the crazy emperor of the roman epoch , like Nero and Caligula , he is calling some presidents of USA , nuts..

more than that , it's about the race in the cold war , to go to the moon..and after the cold war , that continues in the USA , but now it's about other planets..

i remember of reading a new about coca cola planing to put a something on the moon saying "good night - coca cola" haha

"Erase the veins of this dateline
As it tells the story
Of this roman fracture
Space time cliché"

maybe this is something like : the roman empire fell , the american will too..
