The Strokes – Gratisfaction Lyrics

Isn't it "We can only play in the sand" instead of "blame the sun"? Like, we have fun together with this fling, but you'll never get my real love. You'll get too tired of me by then. |

While I agree with you all, you can't deny that much of the literature they reference references Christianity itself. While it may not necessarily be "Christian" music, there is certainly "Christian" imagery. All this is coming from someone who is Jewish, keep that in mind. |

I also need to read East of Eden. But I, too, have become obsessed with the word. I have gone through a pretty rough six or seven months, and this song used to hurt me to listen to. But after reading the meaning of the word itself, "Thou Mayest," it has helped me so much. Not only do I have a choice between good and evil, but at how I perceive everything around me. I have a choice how I react to what happens around me. It's been a blessing to realize that, and I'm still struggling to accept it fully. |

Nina Nastasia – Too Much In Between Lyrics

This popped up on my pandora (breakup) station. It's great. Very simple; i love the guitar. This could be about a friend that you lose touch with, someone who was essential to your group. Or an ex. The "we" in the last section makes me think of a mother who completely lost touch with her child's father. I'm going with the ex, for myself, though. |

I don't think he's holding on to what he has, I think he's hoping to get over it, for something better. |

He's singing in thirds. Basically, he's singing in the scale the song is based on. If a scale has 8 notes, he's doing this:
1 3 2 4 3 5 4 6 5 7 6 8 |

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll Lyrics

When I first heard this I was very much reminded of "Thriller" and (okay, go ahead and laugh) "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys. I was honestly surprised when the video confirmed that this is what they were going for! I'm not very familiar with X, or any drugs for that matter, but this song truly does have a dance-able beat, as does a lot of their new stuff. I still miss the not synthesized, but this is still that same kind of "exciting." Also, so far Brian Chase has been wearing sunglasses in all the music videos for singles from It's Blitz. Could this be a silent protest of all of the drum machine usage? Not much of this album is Brian actually playing. For an Oberlin grad, I would think that would hurt! I wonder how else he's been involved in the recording process? |

Van Morrison – Sweet Thing Lyrics

When my boyfriend and I started dating, I felt like this was the only song that could so articulate the love I was feeling.
I had been in love the year before to someone much older and married. Because he was so much older, that's all I was looking for and all I was trying to be, until I met my boyfriend! He's my age and the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me. And I will never grow so old again. :) |

I agree with you all, and I would think she is younger, but not, like, a kid. Maybe just early 20s or so, and they're just having this fling. This just made it kinda kinky and not creeped out or anything.
BUT... I was listening to this song just now, and in the background during the instrumental parts, he's naming dollar amounts. Maybe he's playing her? Or maybe he's buying her things...? It struck me as the former, which freaked me out a little. |

Anyway, my boyfriend and I go to the same college, but don't live near each other at home, really, so that's how I relate to this one. :) |

The biblical imagery (yet not quite with a parallel story to the bible) reminds me of Cohen's Halleluja. |

Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics

Tommyjazz... This song just screams Dylan, I totally agree. Maybe the imagery isn't perfect, but it's still a great point. It's bitter, but not "Yeah dude, FUCK BUSH!" bitter... (I hate that, too...) Conor uses actual incidents and gives valid reasons in this song for believing what he does!
...and I couldn't agree more. |

Bob Dylan – Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
Bob read an article (or some one showed him an article) about something like this actually happening, and he made it a song. People were supposed to go on this big picnic thing, but someone made illegitamate tickets and sold them, so WAY more people were trying to get on this boat than were supposed to, and it ended up sinking.
But man, oh man, this is one of my FAVORITE Dylan comedy numbers. Almost as good as "I Shall Be Free No. 10"! |

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan's Dream Lyrics

There is something about this that is so perfect, it really does hurt me to listen to it. I'm about to graduate high school, and I have to skip this song when it comes up because it just pains me SO MUCH to think about. Dylan was masterful because, not only was he a poet, but he could perfectly match up his lyrics to the melody he chose for them to give the most emotional effect. And then when he sang.... wow... |

Someone who is with someone else, yeah. (That's what I was personally feeling when I first heard the song!) He's almost convincing himself that she's distant and there's nothing he can do about it, so he needs to just accept it and be happy with it. |

The Wallflowers – Three Marlenas Lyrics

VOLANTSOLO! I've thought about this SO much, too!!! There are other similarities between Blood on the Tracks and Bringing Down the Horse. Like in "God Don't Make Lonely Girls" he talks about the peep show and in Tangled Up in Blue, Bob's in a topless place when he sees the girl (presumable Sara) again...
Man, oh, man... anybody else notice these things? |

Apparently Dylan wrote this after passing a prostitute in the hallway of a hotel. The song was just what he was looking for to finish off Empire Burlesque. If you ask me, it's the only really good song on the album. |
