Sinead O'Connor – This Is A Rebel Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think you were right, in regards to the England-Ireland conflict message. If you read it with Englishman, it makes you think of Ireland asking for independence, pleading with England to recognize it as a kindred spirit who desires the same things England does, but for itself. In this context, the "How come you never say you love me" makes me think of Ireland feeling caged and trapped by English rule, with the rulers never acknowledging Ireland or its culture. If you read it with Irishman, then it's England reminding Ireland of the benefits that UK brought to those they ruled over, and begging the Irish to let bygones be bygones. In this context, it makes me think of England asking why Ireland doesn't reciprocate love to England, since England has been giving them so much. Either way, its amazing. |
Sinead O'Connor – No Man's Woman Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Definitely about God/Jesus. Remember that the picture incident was to protest the Catholic Church's handling (or lack of handling) its child abuse cases, which apparently were infamous in Ireland/Europe long before there were stateside. On some VH1 thing she was talkinga bout how she felt the prescence of God when she was younger, and how amazing that was, and this song always reminds me of that story. Her description was really beautiful (as is the song). |
The Beach Boys – I Can Hear Music Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Amazing love song. The Ronettes do a great cover, too. |
Morrissey – I Know Very Well How I Got My Name Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I thought it was "A child in a curious phase." |
Pink – God Is A DJ Lyrics | 17 years ago |
She can sing, granted, but I wouldn't say she's the greatest artist ever or anything. I don't see how this song could POSSIBLY being offensive, given that it's just a big analogy. Not being blasphemous or anything. Anyway, anyone who says "oh, if only better ____," then it wouldn't be the same song and you probably wouldn't have even thought about it twice. Admit it. IF you care enough to post, you like it. |
David Bowie – Velvet Goldmine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Wonder what Angie'd have to say about it.... |
Morrissey – Sister I'm A Poet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I talk about the books I read. Don't have much reason to, though. |
Morrissey – I Will See You In Far-Off Places Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I know its a horrible thing to say, but wouldn't it be the funniest thing EVER if Osama Bin Laden turned out to be a HUGE Mozz fan? And Mozz knew? And this was their secret acknowledgement of each other? Hahahahahahaha. |
Gil Scott-Heron – Lady Day and John Coltrane Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Lady Day does indeed wash my troubles away. John Coltrane too. I love Gil Scott-Heron. |
Erasure – A Little Respect Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Ironically, if they did indeed, they might have a better chance of pulling it off. :-D Just kidding. Song is amazing, Wheatus sucks. Er, blows. Erm, is bad. |
Madonna – Jump Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Great song, it's unstoppable and I agree with Killmefaster about the meaning. Fantastic in Devil Wears Prada (website/trailer). |
Morrissey – Ganglord Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Anyone else think this is amazingly beautiful? I like the criminal theme that Morrissey's run through his work, and this is a great example, one I'm sure that will go down as one of his best b-side's. And the idea that the police think nothing more of the ganglord (and Morrissey?) than lower-class, ghetto-dwellers is one of the most perfect ways to describe that cocky attitude a lot of cops have. |
Patti Smith – Kimberly Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about her sister. |
Billie Holiday – Summertime Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Porgy and Bess. Its a lullaby, as I recall. |
10,000 Maniacs – Everyday Is Like Sunday Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The lyrics are not: Every day is like Sunday Every day is silent and grey They ARE: Everyday is like Sunday Everyday is silent and grey There is a difference. |
Morrissey – Redondo Beach (Patti Smith cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The beginning is "late afternoon," I do believe. Regardless, since its a Patti Smith cover, same backstory. According to the lyric-post of Smith's version, its either about a lesbian fight (as it appears on the surface) or a fight with her sister. I never even considered the second part, but hey, I could be wrong. |
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Sowing Seeds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I thought it was about relationships. Like, "I should be on my phone" instead of being alone? And the whole sowing-seeds-of-friendship idea? Maybe that was just me. |
Morrissey – Human Being Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Amazing. Its like a different song almost, comparing the original to this one. I love Mozz. So much. I don't think its really that deep. So screw the meanings part. |
Morrissey – In The Future When All's Well Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Ok, so am I completely stupid for not getting the Lee thing? Maybe I'm just not thinking right now but I'm at a loss. |
Joshua Radin – Girlfriend in a Coma (The Smiths cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A brilliant cover of a Smiths song. His voice does it so much differently than Morrissey's, I can't say if one's better than the other or what. Just beautiful. No deep meaning to this one, really. |
Morrissey – I Will See You In Far-Off Places Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think it goes without saying that its an anti-war song. I read somewhere that its about Osama but I don't really think it is; I think its to the world in general. It definitely grows on you. |
Morrissey – At Last I Am Born Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Is he seriously happy now? I feel like he's loaded with sarcasm in this song, but maybe that's just me in denial. |
Morrissey – Life Is A Pigsty Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Mozz has this wonderful way of conveying emotion and hitting my heart while making me smile. The line about throwing him off a train just ruins my composure. |
Morrissey – In The Future When All's Well Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Please, plsae stand up and defend me In the future when all's well Confront what you are afraid of In the future when all's well Amazing. Everybody said this album wouldn't be great, at least to me, and it. just. IS. |
Morrissey – Dear God, Please Help Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh. My. God. I was NOT expecting this track. Not that its bad, but to transition from "I Will See You..." to this just pulled heartstrings. Amazing. Beautiful music, heartbreaking vocals. Jaw-dropping lyrics. Just amazing. |
The Raveonettes – Let's Rave On Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Come ON. You have to be kidding me with the zero comments thing. Great little pop song. |
The Raveonettes – Remember Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Drug song, by the way. |
The Raveonettes – Remember Lyrics | 18 years ago |
How can this song have no comments? Honestly, its easily one of the best songs of one of the best albums from the last ten years. Raveonettes are amazing. |
The Raveonettes – Ode To L.A. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yay for songs with Moe Tucker. |
The Velvet Underground – Lonesome Cowboy Bill Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I always think of "Lonesome Cowboys" when I hear this song. Whether or not that's what the song is about, I'm not sure, but I first heard it after reading POPism, and the connection came as soon as I heard the first "Lonesome Cowboy Bill." |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Bleeding Powers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I agree, it fits the Iraq war because of when it was written, but its just war in general. People are always looking for excuses for war. But I think that was part of the point, how it always is the same; that's what I got from the "still" seeing people waiting for the next excuse. Great song, too. |
Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
^ I always thought it had to do with "Land of 1000 Dances," the song that she covered [in that Patti Smith way, where she gives it a completely new dimension] in the middle. It sort-of follows the "DO THE_______" thing. |
Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I agree with the first time thing, but I don't think its a woman. Mostly because it says I entered nothing and nothing entered me, 'till you came with the key, Which makes me think both parties "entered," and I doubt that a woman entered him. Not to mention key screams phallic symbol, to me. Maybe not. Just my interpretation. |
Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Crap, I forgot about that. :-P |
Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Edit: I mispelled "Visconti" as "Visconi;" however, "Visconi" should be "Pasolini," for he was the director behind Mamma Roma. |
Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Fantastic new single. Some background information: -"Pasolini" is Italian director, poet, and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was famous for portraying life the way it was, rather than happy-go-lucky as politicians wished to show. -Accatone is "Accatone," one of Pasolini's most famous films, about a street hustler named Vincent whose nickname is "Accatone," which means "rags." -Visconti was a ruling family of Milan; however, in this song it more likely refers to Luchino Visconti, another Italian director. -Magnani is the last name of Anna Magnani, a famous Italian actress who starred in Visconi's "Mamma Roma." Italy's obviously rubbed off on Mozzer. In a good way. |
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Burn-Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't really have anything important to say about this song, I just think that its sad that it has no comments. But if its anything near a point of discussion, its on my spanish binder in red pen? |
Doves – Ambition Lyrics | 18 years ago |
NO COMMENTS?! What's up with that?! This song is so beyond good. Its amazing. Its sweeping ambiance, and the distorted vocals are great. |
Heather Small – Proud Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this song. Ever since I saw it on "Queer As Folk." Well, I guess I heard it. Anyways, great gay-pride song, but also a great just overall empowerment song. |
Morrissey – Jack The Ripper Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I have yet to hear the covers. But I do think the studio version is better. I love the added end, which goes: And no one knows a thing about my life I can come and go as I please And if I want to, I can stay Oh, or if I want to, I can leave Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh, oh Nobody knows me Oh |
Queen – Under Pressure Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is one of my favorites, any genre. Taking Bowie (whom I love) and mixing him in with Queen produced a fantastic song. HOWEVER, the MCR/Used duet grates on my nerves. The whiny "emo" voice or whatever they call themselves ruins the song! |
Queen – We Will Rock You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Time to completely ruin the alpha-male sentiment. A friend of mine made some points that I thought were really interesting with this song. He called it a gay-rights-movement theme. Think about it: "You've got mud on your face"--dragging your face through the mud... "You big disgrace"--The way society looks down on homosexuals. "Waving your banner"--Marches? Pride marches? Yeah, I thought it was pretty far reaching too, but considering how gay Freddie Mercury was... Disregarding all of that, its a fantastic song. |
Patti Smith – Redondo Beach Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Fantastic song. Morrissey does, indeed, do a good cover. I think I like Patti Smith's better, though. |
Patti Smith – Gloria Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I hate how the original punk rock goddess has barely any comments whatsoever, but Green Day and their ilk can get scores of comments from their teenage-girls-with-credit-cards fans. Patti Smith never gets enough credit. |
The Smiths – Jeane Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The Sandie Shaw version is superior, yes, but this song is beautiful in both versions. |
The Smiths – Sweet and Tender Hooligan Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Its very danceable, yes. I love the lines: Poor woman Strangled in her very own bed as she read But that's OK Because she was old and she would have died anyway Makes me smile. Every time. |
The Smiths – Sweet and Tender Hooligan Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Its very danceable, yes. I love the lines: Poor woman Strangled in her very own bed as she read But that's OK Because she was old and she would have died anyway Makes me smile. Every time. |
Blondie – Look Good in Blue Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"If it's alright with you I could give you some head And shoulders to lie on" I love Debbie Harry's sexual lyrics. :-D |
Blondie – Rip Her to Shreds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The ultimate bitchy song. God, I love Debbie Harry. |
Blondie – Hanging on the Telephone Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It makes me dance. But other than that, its a fantastic song by a fantastic band. |
