Daughter – Landfill Lyrics | 9 years ago |
It's the end of a relationship, and feeling used and rejected. Initially I would think she didn't mean anything to him, but then she mentions his tears... |
Daughter – Smother Lyrics | 9 years ago |
It seems to me to be written from the point of view of an incredibly depressed person who has just come out of a relationship: "I want him but we're not right." This leads her to reflect on her whole life, and the self-hatred she feels towards herself; she feels that she's a "suffocater" and she wishes she'd never been born. It is a dark but truly stunning song. |
Kacey Musgraves – It Is What It Is Lyrics | 10 years ago |
It's about a casual relationship - it may not be a good idea, but she's gonna do it anyway: 'Too dumb to give up, Too stubborn to change' 'Maybe I love you, maybe I'm just bored.' It's not gonna work as something serious, but in the meantime they're having fun. |
We Are Augustines – Chapel Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
They've said it's about lost love so watching a past love (perhaps the love of your life, that you lost) get married make sense. |
Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Yep, that's how I see it too. |
Garbage – Blood For Poppies Lyrics | 12 years ago |
They've said this is about isolation - Shirley was inspired by reading an article about troops in Afghanistan, and wanted to capture the feeling of being away from home, wondering if you'll ever return. |
Garbage – I Hate Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wow, I love this song. Shirley sums up bad experiences with relationships so perfectly. I especially love this part: "They shore you up. They lay all their dreams on you. They let you in and you start to believe you're soft as a miracle. Unfurled, I was new and unfurled. Innocent and open as any lamb and hoping for paradise." It depicts perfectly when you open up to someone who feeds you lines, leaving you vulnerable, and then you get burned. |
Rachael Yamagata – Quiet Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Well, she's captured that feeling perfectly. |
Marina and the Diamonds – The State of Dreaming Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Marina said this is about Marilyn Monroe and how so many girls look up to her when in fact she was a deeply troubled woman, which doesn't get spoken about often. |
Marina and the Diamonds – Lies Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is quite frankly stunning, especially the acoustic version. |
Lizzie West – Chariots Rise Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Perfect at the end of Secretary, love it :) |
Liz Phair – Flower Lyrics | 12 years ago |
It was originally girlfriend but was changed to minions for the re-issue in 2008. |
St. Vincent – Cruel Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Agree with this 100%. |
Ani DiFranco – Gravel Lyrics | 12 years ago |
never thought of it like that, but you could be onto something! |
Beth Orton – Stolen Car Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Isn't it "I see YOUR face drive like a stolen car" not "I see a face"? That's what it sounds like to me anyway, and I think it makes more sense. Also I think it's "when every LIE speaks the language of love." I agree with Lerxst - I think it's about a brief re-kindling after a break up. I mainly see it as that because of the line "I couldn't help notice a light that was long gone still burning strong". And all the stuff about "knowing better". Clearly this guy was treating her badly and she know he's no good for her but she can't resist him. |
Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Interesting the water references given this comes after 'What the Water Gave Me' on the album...perhaps this is about life after death? |
Florence + the Machine – Spectrum Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Favourite song on the new album (though it's hard to pick one...) It's epic! So catchy and wonderful. To me it's about falling in love and the euphoria one feels when they are. |
Florence + the Machine – What the Water Gave Me Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I agree with the suicide/Virginia Woolf theory. Also Ophelia, yes! Death means the end of troubles...the water will give her death, a release from her woes. |
Florence + the Machine – Landscape Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Yes, Brod, I agree - Virginia Woolf immediately came to my mind too, given the 'To The Lighthouse' reference. 'What the Water Gave Me' also makes me think of Woolf... |
Florence + the Machine – Leave My Body Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Given the other suicidal references on the album ("What The Water Gave Me" for example) I agree with that interpretation. However, I don't think suicide here necessarily means wanting to die...just wanting to let go and leave all your troubles behind. |
Florence + the Machine – Shake It Out Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This really is an incredible song. It's so positive and empowering; about letting go of all that's holding you down and getting to you. As for it being about a hangover, I reckon it's a lot deeper than that, despite what Florence said. I think it's more about troubles in general and wanting to get rid of them. However, in regards to hangovers, it does make sense, because when you're hungover everything does get to you so much more - whatever has been troubling you seems amplified somehow; in juxtaposition as to how when you're drunk everything seems so much better. Drinking to deal with things just leads to feeling so much worse the next day when you're hungover. So I think it's about 'shaking off' your troubles, on a deeper level than a hangover, but I agree that a hangover could have triggered this need. |
Florence + the Machine – Breaking Down Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I agree it's about depression - how once you've been there it's always there in the background ("creeping in the streetlight") and you never know when it's going to come back again. Flo says about the song: "That was one of those songs that I just started humming and then the words came out. Often, I won’t know what I’m going to sing about until I actually step up to record, and you just have to follow this freeflowing train of thought -- these images of fear that you have as a child, something in the room, something for a child to fear, and then as an adult, that being there too as a creeping depression. It’s something quite sinister, but also something quite familiar. And I guess I just wanted to try and take that and turn it on its head, and make it something beautiful and uplifting as maybe a way to tackle it. It’s one of those sad songs with happy tunes." |
Ani DiFranco – Sunday Morning Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I agree with both the comments above. It reminds me of The Diner in describing the mundane things she misses about them. Wonderful song. |
Ed Sheeran – You Need Me, I Don't Need You Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Half of the lyrics are missing. The rest of them: ‘Cause you need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you, at all You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you, at all You need me Cause with the lyrics I’ll be aiming it right I won’t stop till my name’s in light At Stadium Heights with Damien Rice On red carpets, now I’m on Arabian nights Because I’m young and all my brothers gonna give me advice Long nighter, short height and I’m gone hyper Never be anything but a singer-songwriter The games over but now I’m on a new level Watch how I step on the track without a loop pedal People think that I’m bound to blow up I’ve done around about a thousand shows But I haven’t got a house plus I live on the couch So you can be the lyrics when I’m singing them out (wow) From day one, I’ve been prepared With vo5 wax for my ginger hair So now I’m back to the sofa giving a dose of what the future holds Cause it’s another day Plus I’ll keep my last name forever keep the genre pretty basic Gonna be breaking into other people’s tunes when I chase it And replace it with the elephant in the room with a facelift Into another rappers shoes using new laces Selling cds from my rucksack aiming for the papers Selling cds from my rucksack aiming for majors Nationwide til’ we’re just jack, soon as I get the bus back Clean cut kid without a razor for the moustache I hit back when the pen hurts me I’m still a choir boy in a Fenchurch tee I’m still the same as a year ago But more people hear me though According to the myspace and youtube videos I’m always doing shows, if I’m not I’m in the studio Truly broke, never growing up call me *Ruffio Melody music maker Reading all the papers They say I’m up and coming like im fucking in an elevator . Cause you need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you, at all You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you You need me, man, I don’t need you, at all You need me, man, I don’t need you |
Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This really is a beautiful, stunning song...she has a wonderful voice. And I agree with laurajaneface & spearmintillo about the meaning. |
Florence + the Machine – Kiss with a Fist Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Never said my opinion was the end all, or that differing opinions are ignorant. I just think that with what they said, it makes sense that it's metaphorical, and that's how I've always seen it (personally). I just don't like that some may say the song is endorsing physical violence or something, because I don't think it is and some people have implied that. |
Chase and Status – Time Lyrics | 12 years ago |
There are some mistakes in the lyrics. The correct ones are below: If you can find the time To give your love to me I will wait for you If that's all you need (Time, Time) If you can find the time (Time, Time) If ever you're free Just drop me a line And tell me where you'll be I'll be right here If you can find the time Just be sincere. If you can find the time I'll wait for you. But if you can't find the time (Time, Time, Time) Then cut me loose. 'Cause I don't have the time And I don't have the patience What do you take me for Why must I wait 'Cause while you decide I'm fucking suffocating 'Cause if you can't find the time My bleeding heart won't make it [x2] If you can find the time To give your love to me Just drop me a line And tell me where you'll be I'll be right here If you can find the time Just be sincere 'Cause I don't have the time And I don't have the patience What do you take me for Why must I wait 'Cause while you decide I'm fucking suffocating 'Cause if you can't find the time, My bleeding heart won't make it [x3] I'll be right here If you can find the time Just be sincere If you can find the time I'll, I'll wait for you But if you can't find the time Then cut me loose. 'Cause I don't have the time And I don't have the patience What do you take me for Why must I wait 'Cause while you decide I'm fucking suffocating 'Cause if you can't find the time My bleeding heart won't make it [x3] 'Cause I don't have the time [x6] My bleeding heart won't make it |
Marina and the Diamonds – Radioactive Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Correct lyrics: Lying on a fake beach You'll never get a tan Baby, I'm gonna leave you drowing Until you reach for my hand In the night your heart is full And by the morning empty But baby, I'm the one who left you You're not the one who left me When you're around me I'm radioactive My blood is burning, radioactive I'm turning radioactive My blood is radioactive My heart is nuclear Love is all that I fear I'm turning radioactive My blood is radioactive Waiting for the nightfall For my heart to light up Oh baby, I want you to die for For you to die for my love In the night your heart is full And by the morning empty But baby, I'm the one who left you You're not the one who left me When you're around me I'm radioactive My blood is burning, radioactive I'm turning radioactive My blood is radioactive My heart is nuclear Love is all that I fear Ready to be let down And now I'm heading for a meltdown Tonight I feel like neon gold I take one look at you and I grow cold And I grow cold And I grow cold When you're around me I'm radioactive My blood is burning, radioactive I'm turning radioactive My blood is radioactive [X2] My heart is nuclear Love is all that I fear Ready to be let down And now I'm heading for a meltdown |
Chase and Status – Time Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Love this song. It's obviously about waiting for someone to commit to you, but they won't, and trying to find the strength to stop waiting for them and walk away. |
Skunk Anansie – Squander Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song is wonderful. I think it's about someone afraid to let go and love, and she's telling them they're throwing good things away and soon they'll have no one if they carry on the way they are. |
Ani DiFranco – The Diner Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love this song. The mundane descriptions of what she misses about him are just wonderful. |
Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics | 12 years ago |

La Roux – Armour Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |

The Pierces – You'll Be Mine Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Correct lyrics: We could bring a blanket for the grass Cover up your eyes so you don't see If you let me go I'm running fast One two three count one two three We could watch the black birds cross the skies We could count the leaves left on the trees We could count the teardrops in our eyes One two three yeah one two three One two three yeah one two three Now you know now you know How I feel and I won't back down Prick your finger on a spinning wheel But dont make a sound Drop of blood and now you're taken For all time With a kiss you will awaken And you'll be mine you'll be mine you'll be mine I could always stay and work it out Wondering if you still wanted me But there are so many things to doubt One two three count one two three Think that for a moment you were mine I know that you saw what we could be But then you went and changed your mind One two three yeah one two three One two three yeah one two three Now you know now you know How I feel and I won't back down Prick your finger on a spinning wheel But don't make a sound Drop of blood and now you're taken For all time With a kiss you will awaken And you'll be mine |
Heather Nova – Throwing Fire At The Sun Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Totally agree. And this is a stunning song. |
Pink – It's All Your Fault Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think it's about a relationship that's not going anywhere, and her being frustrated at the one-sidedness of it all. She wants him to be with her properly, but he's holding back for whatever reason. She's blaming him because he called her beautiful and said all these wonderful things etc, so made her fall for him hard and now she can't let go. The line "I feel like we could be really awesome together" I think implies this relationship hasn't actually gotten off the road yet. And so she's telling him to "make up your mind cause it's now or never." |

agreed! |

Laura Marling – Rambling Man Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I agree; to me it's about accepting who you are and not changing for others. |
Heather Nova – I'm Alive Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Heather Nova – Island Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Yep, definitely sanctuary from an abusive partner. LOVE this song. Only just discovered Heather, can't believe how underappreciated she is! |
