Seems obvious that "I open up my wallet, and it's full of blood" is obviously about

money -> power -> war -> bloodshed

amh1010, you hit the nail on the head.

It's so strange, I just got out of a relationship EXACTLY like the lyrics describe, right when the new album came out. I heard it and it was like...telling my story.

Just mind-blowing..

The Flaming Lips – All We Have Is Now Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's fairly obvious what this song is about...it's very sci-fi. If I understand it correctly, his future self tells him that something terrible will happen because of him. He says 'you and me' because it's him. He's talking to the future version of himself. And so, he has to die. Hence...

"I noticed that he had a watch and hat
That looked familiar
He was me - from a dimension torn free
Of the future"

It's him, from the near/far future...and the world is in ruins, or is about to be turned into ruins.

"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - You and me were never meant
to be part of the future - "

'We're not gonna make it'...we're gonna die.

You and me were never meant to be part of the future'...maybe he's referring to how people say that everything in life happens for a reason. Their reason was, apparently, to die.

' All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now - '

Pretty self explanatory if you read the rest of what I wrote. He'll never see the future, because he'll be dead. Strange, because his future self has seen the future, but HE won't.

Awesome song...one of the Flaming Lips' best...lyrically at least.

I think the whole message of this song is...

Life isn't short, and the relationships we have will last for years and years, and they could mean more than any petty problems that temporarily bring us down.

Yep. :)

Stars – Sleep Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually, when you think about it...this song could very easily be about cunnilingus. Haha. In any case, I love this line:

"with buried heads we both forget
all of the past and its regret
wind picks up the window shakes
but we won't hear the morning break"

Kinda reminds me of a double-suicide...Romeo and Juliet style.

Yeah, she says 'We will always be the light'. If you see the video, she's wearing this very lustrous eyeshadow and when she says that line, she closes her eyes, and light glints brightly off of the eyeshadow. I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose.

The Shins – So Says I Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought the line

"Cause if it makes them money they might just give you life this time"

Was a reference to record companies who only sign bands that they think will make them money. After all, The Shins are indie. But I could be wrong.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 19 years ago
"Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned"

It seems that 'The Jester' is Bob Dylan throughout this song. If that is true, this line could be a reference to Bob Dylan's song 'Hurricane', which was about Rubin Hurricane Carter's being accused of the Lafayette Bar murders. The line

"Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown"

This could mean that while Carter was on Trial, Dylan came to the rescue and exposed the corruption behind his conviction. He's saying that Carter was a Jesus-like figure in that he was being sacrificed for the sins of others. But the Jester...removed his 'crown of thorns'. He saved him.

"The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned"

Carter's conviction was dismissed, many say, partly thanks to Dylan's exposure of the case.

So there's my analysis of that small part of the song. The rest has been discussed at great length already.

Exactly, bugzcar. Exactly.

"Hey, where have I gone?
I used to be the one
Looking for a hero
In some far off place
Blindly ever forward
Never knowing all along
The truth was right here
In my own song"

I used to be so weak, going through my life so helplessly dependent on finding other heroes, only to find that I myself have become a hero to others.

I love this band.

Nickel Creek – Reasons Why Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not particularly religious, I cannot relate to this song. I have not, nor have I ever felt anything 'missing' from my life...I think christians are just hopelessly reliant on god and are quick to blame any problems on him/her, only to find he/she doesn't exist/doesn't interfere and thus they continue to feel empty. Sad, really.

Frou Frou – Let Go Lyrics 19 years ago
"There's beauty in the breakdown"

That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

This is supported by the first verse, which basically tells you...the past is past. Put it behind you and move on.

"it gains the more it gives
and it rises with the fall
so hand me that remote
can't you see that all that stuff's a sideshow"

I don't think I need to say that this verse is about television and how it profits off the stupidity of people. It gains more revenue and power the more programming they put out...when people are feeling down, they watch TV...TV benefits. They're trying to say 'Wake up, don't be a slave to the idiot box, there's a whole wide world out there'.

Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is obviously about religion. As people have been saying, yes, this song is about people who waste their whole lives denying their natural urges to secure a spot in the afterlife, which may not even be there.

The line that gives it away the most would be the last one.

"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?"

He's basically saying...you were dumb enough to waste your whole mortal life holding yourself to a set of rules, why wouldn't you waste the life you may or may not have after death?

As usual, Modest Mouse's message is loud, clear, and thought-provoking. *golf clap*

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is talking to a lover, from a distance perhaps...I'm feeling rather interpretive, so here I go out on a limb. Bear with me here...

First of all, I'm a DJ at a College radio station (88.5 FM for those in Central Washington), and we had this album before they got famous. We also had the single for 'Maps', and the CD cover was basically drawn out like a normal map, except in the upper left corner was an X that had text above it reading 'Me' and a dotted line connected that X to another in the bottom right with text above it that reads 'You'.
Now...based on this, and the enigmatic lyrics of the song. I think I can make sense of it.

I think this song is about a long distance relationship. The person singing is saying 'Come to me, they don't love you like I love you'. Maybe the person she is talking to is experiencing family/friend troubles. In essence saying 'Please, come live with me, come find me...' using map(s)? Perhaps, hence the title.

Now, to dissect a little..

"Pack up
i'm straight
i'm not
i'm say say say..............."

I can't explain the 'say say say' part...however I can say, the 'pack up, I'm straight' is saying, pack your things, come see me, I'm good, I'm morally good, I'm 'straight'.

(chorus)
"Wait they don't love you like i love you"

Maybe she's saying 'wait, they don't love you like I love you', because the person she is talking to 'assumingly on the phone', is about to hang up, intimidated by her offer. And she's saying, 'Wait! They don't love you like I love you.', or something.

"Made off
don't stray
well my kinds your kind i'll stay the same"

Maybe at this point her lover is on his/her way and she is saying 'don't stray', like 'don't change your mind and return home'. And with the line 'my kind's your kind I'll stay the same' she's saying 'the way I am is the way you want your lover to be, and I'm not going to change'.

That's what I think. :)

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Everlasting Gaze Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is about God, and how the people who believe in god are...well...morons. It sounds harsh, and I might be wrong, but the biggest proving point I believe is the part that stands out the most in the song. (Coincidence? Nah.)

"we all want to hold in the everlasting gaze
enchanted in the rapture of his sentimental sway
but underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every c.o.g.
the fickle fascination of an everlasting god"

In the lines,

'but underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every c.o.g.
the fickle fascination of an everlasting god',

He's saying here that the only way god has continued to be believed in through the years is the hopeless dependence on his followers. For as we all know, any god will 'exist' as long as people believe in it. The wheels, of course symbolizing god's survival through the years. The skulls of every cog being the people who believe in him, as a result of their 'fickle fascination'.

Just my interpretation..

The Smashing Pumpkins – I of the Mourning Lyrics 20 years ago
Yes, I think it is a song about a shut-in, someone who refuses to acknowledge the outside world. You can tell they have people who care about them hence the lines

"I peer through curtains on empty streets
Behind a wall of caller ID
No one's out there
To hear if I care "

This is saying that people do care, but he doesn't think they do.

Radiohead – High and Dry Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm not sure what this song is about, I was thinking maybe it's about a woman who doesn't have the ability to have children, and because of this men don't want her, hence the line...
"All your insides fall to pieces.
You just sit there wishing you could still make love."
Of course 'insides fall to pieces' might refer to her inability to have children...wishing you could still make love, maybe it goes so far as to restrict her ability to have sex. Also..
"Oh its the best thing that you ever had
Best thing that you ever ever had
Its the best thing that you ever had
Best thing you ever had has gone away"
Maybe this refers to her first pregnancy, when she realized she couldn't have children. The best thing she ever had (a child) has gone away.

Of course the first verse seems to be about Evil Canevil...I'm prolly wrong, just my interpretation

I think the 'black star' might be something that is definitely there, but they can't see. Maybe a bad compatibility, or something. Obviously you can't see a black star. So he's saying 'blame it on the black star', like...blame it on this, our problem...just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.

Sublime – Badfish Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is all about Bradley's addiction to Heroin.

"When you grab a hold of me
Tell me that I'll never be set free
But I'm a parasite
Creep and crawl, I step into the night"

He's introducing the song by saying he's addicted.

"Two pints of booze
Tell me, are you a bad fish too?
Are you a badfish too?
Ain't got no money to spend
I hope the night would never end
Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get get me off this reef?"

He's basically talking to a guy when he's drunk, trying to score Heroin.

"Baby, you're a big blue whale
Grab the reef when all duck divin' fails
I swim, but I wish I never learned
The water's too polluted with germs
I dive deep when it's ten feet overhead
Grab the reef from underneath my bed (underneath my bed)"

He's talking to someone who he does drugs with, he's saying when he's pissed off he shoots heroin.

"Ain't got no quarrels with God
Ain't got no time to grow old
Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off this reef?
I got a gun"

He's crying for help, but no one will help him...so he considers suicide

Further Seems Forever – Just Until Sundown Lyrics 20 years ago
"well just for the moment, just one more time
just one more second and we'll be just fine
this could be just, just in case its the last time
well just for the moment, just one more time
just one more second and we'll be just fine
this could be the last time...
just until sundown
just one more day I could hold you
that I could hold you"

I have heard that this song is about a couple reconciling their differences on the night before armageddon strikes.
Something like...they know that, despite their differences, they are the only ones who truly love each other, and they wanted to just hold each other in their arms 'until sundown', of the final day...their last day alive, they wanted to spend together. Beautiful interpretation, if you ask me.
It goes to show you, that despite petty differences, when it truly matters, you will want to be with those you truly love.

They affect both people, not just in the method that one person will love another person, but that the love that one person gives another person will make the person giving the love...love themself. Finding it so much like myself, so like a brother, really. I felt that I had been happy, and I was happy again. Happy that I was consimated. For me to feel less alone [??????]
