there are a few mistakes to these lyrics:
then 2nd line is:
"wild and fierce and so far reaching"
and the line 8th line is actually:
"comforting, gradually burying"
personally, i feel this song deals heavily with the point in a relationship in which one questions whether they want to be in the relationship or not. the lyrics range from romantic to very stark and cold, the chorus consists solely of "i don't know what...i don't know" which is almost verbatim what conversations consist of when the confused parner tries to explain themselves.
the pre-choruses metaphorically demonstrate the extremities of feelings (float vs. sink, mountain peak vs. deep valley) either for the partner or for the relationship itself.
however, the ending could vary in meaning:
1)he could be claiming that he has the heart of cold and it is hindered by the "winter rain" (relationship/coldness of love/the cycles of their love, like seasons, from warm/hot to cold/numb) and he could be saying to himself to "turn and go, don't wander in this storm again" in which wandering in the storm obviously represents the relationship.
or
2)he could be saying to his lover that her heart cannot glisten (love cannot blossom) in his winter rain (cycling depression) and thus, tells her to "turn and go, don't wander in this storm again" in which the storm symbolizes his mixed emotions.
my favorite line is:
"your arms are the earth folding up around me; comforting, gradually burying"
this fully exhibits his/her feelings toward their partner in which they adore the feeling of their embrace but the affection of their partner, which far exceeds his/her own, brings about waves of guilt, 'gradually burying' |

i, unfortunately, am fairly new to the sounds of s,c,c. however, i have had much trouble tearing myself from this song. on the surface, this song could obviously pertain to a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship (as many songs do these days). nonetheless, i think on a deeper level this song could speak about a religious relationship. not necessarily with 'god'..but with religion as a whole. the line 'our hearts are in places that just seem too far' ties in with the distance to heaven/salvation/liberation while the entire intro deals with the disappointment of unanswered prayers and all that jazz. equally, the title plays into the religious incorporation...since there is a separation between church and state, churches are not taxed on their offerings and therefore it is straight profit, thus, '(moneymaker)'. i'm really not sure though, its just a stab in the dark. |

i just recently saw the cast play at a music festival where they were the closing act and they ended on this song. every single other band came out and watched them perform. no one in the crowd could move. their eyes were fixated on the spectacle before them. easily one of the most moving moments of my life. |

they are slightly like godspeed in terms of post-rock instrumentalism. however, they only have 4 members and rely mostly on the standard guitar, bass, drum setup. as i'm sure you know, godspeed has a bakers dozen of members and play just about anything that makes noise. both equally breath-taking in their own light though. |

i just love the tone of this song. it seems to me to be about letting go, but also being alright with that decision.
so often songs of this nature tend to be fueled by pain and angst, but the white octave pull off something different. it is actually rather uplifting, as if to say maybe things will be better after the departure.
personally, i really appreciate a song of loss that isn't so heart-breakingly tragic, and actually eases my torture instead of antagonizing it. |

i, for one, am glad that sigur ros limited the vocals on this cd. the music is breath-taking enough as it is. i love the way that the band actually incorporates the vocals into the songs so that they sound like other instruments....it definitely adds to the feeling the cd gives off. i feel that sigur ros bettered themselves on () by limiting vocals and not overdoing the album lyrically, but letting the music speak for itself. |

i agree with you whitetide about the inclination of failure/destruction for humankind. the theme of the llo series relies heavily upon greed/failure/loss/corruption. you're "stab" is a logical one, and one in which i agree with.
on a personal note, this is an extremely powerful song. the buildup at the end is miraculous to say the least. the appleseed cast should make a plan for world domination. |

not to burst anyone's bubble...but there was an interview with michael (singer/guitarist) not long after the release of "fighting starlight" when asked about this particular song, michael stated that though he gets many responses about it, the song is completely made up. he tried to envision what life would be like for someone had their loved one drown.
despite the fact that it has no personal meaning to the band, it can still have personal meanings to the listeners, that cannot be denied. benton falls is such a powerful ensemble, this cd puts me in another mind-zone every time i listen to it, as does their new cd. |

actually i believe this song is about author jack kerouac from the beat generation. when kerouac wrote his most famous book "on the road" it is said that he just sat down and wrote "for miles" on a typewriter without stopping.
for those jawbreaker fans out there, i'm sure you remember in the song boxcar when he sings "you don't know what i'm all about. like killing cops and reading kerouac." the connections are obvious, however i'm sure there are some personal lines in the song as well because not all of it perfectly relates to kerouac's life. |

to me this song is about corporate greed. and how big business, govornment, and all other leaders of the nation tend to take the life out everything. they are heartless wretches searching for ways to fill their pockets. i think appleseed incorporates the 'greed' storyline throughout the entire low level owl series. its nice to hear meaningful, beautiful music....about something other than heartache and loneliness...though this song can make one feel quite lonely. it is still beautiful in every aspect of the word.

yes, sadly enough, thats what it appears to be. but the funny thing (to me at least) is that half of these bands that are now considered "emo"...aren't. i mean, it takes more than clever word-play to be considered "emo" in my book.
i've heard really really bad pop/rap/country/rock (basically all genres) and the music just sucks....but the lyrics are clever, and they mean something. now are these bands considered "emo"??...hell no, but for some (very odd) reason the same thing is happening with some of these pop/punk bands these days. their music totally blows...but their lyrics mean a little more than the average band...so why are the automatically considered "emo"??? good question and unfortunately i don't know the answer.
to me "emo" is all about the music...and the lyrics are just an added bonus. true some lyrics are amazing (last days of april....but thats a personal thing...others may disagree). bands like the white octave that play instrumental songs (no lyrics for those who don't know) that affect me just the same as if it DID have lyrics....thats true "emo" for me. music that moves me....and not to the trash can to throw away the cd....which i find myself doing with all of these shitty so-called "emo" bands these days. it makes me sick. people need to know the history before they start labeling music that they know nothing about.
now as for time spent driving....i haven't heard this song at all but i have heard other songs...and "lowlight" is beautiful.
and to whoever said that we need to grow up. maybe its closed-minded people like yourself that need to grow up. and by the way i've heard just as many uplifting "emo" songs as i've heard depressing ones. and i take it by your name that you are a pantera fan?? (vinnyrex)....they play such happy songs don't they!!....yeah |

well i downloaded this song because i noticed that everyone was saying how awesome this band was...so i figured if so many people were into it then there had to be a reason.
well i wasn't disappointed...however..i'm finding that this "melodic punk" with two singers is a path that is being traveled more and more these days. i think that thursday is one step beyond all these "emo" (i don't see how any of these bands are "emo"...some people need to really check out the roots of "emo" music to understand) because they have much deeper song lyrics....where most of these bands are singing just about cheating girlfriends and not fitting in......what i've read of thursday's lyrics actually have good topics, excellently written, and played with passion.
