| That's more or less what I was thinking, slick21. It always seemed to me to be about someone who's lonely, isolated from the rest of society, whose TV and radio are really their only connections to the rest of the world. Genesis performed live on VH1 recently, starting off their set with this song, and it got me thinking, that there's more and more of our society who live exactly like that: we live alone, are "telecommuters" who work from home, and most of our interaction with the outside world is done over computers. Speaking from experience, it can be a horribly lonely, isolating lifestyle. | |

| Was just listening to Coldplay on VH-1's Storytellers, and their lead singer, Chris Martin, was talking about how this song was about getting involved with someone who's a celebrity (Gwynneth Paltrow, his wife), and his fear and discomfort about writing things personal to the two of them. In fact, he considered writing all his songs, he said, about science, or art history, or anything other than what was going on in his personal life. End result? Those fears got channeled into this song. | |

When I think about this song (which I strongly relate to)< I get the impression of someone wo's not proud of the path their life has taken, and what they've done. At the same time, they've accepted that they did the best they could and that, before you judge them, you have to look at things from their perspective. In the end, though, I think it's as much about learning to accept your own mistakes in life, as it is about encouraging others to do the same. |

Now here's a weird one for y'all: around the same time this song was released, a French race car driver started referring to himself as "Raël", stating that he'd been visited by aliens, etc. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raelians Now, Raël has stated he was first visited on Dec 13, 1973 (oddly enough, 25 days before I was born ^_^). Sometime in 1974 he was on French TV, and he'd talked to the French media before that. So, which came first? Genesis' Raël, or Raël the French cult founder? Who influenced who? |

This song is *not* about atheism. Andy Partridge of XTC, who originally wrote/performed the song, wrote it after his wife died, IIRC. The song's written from the perspective of someone who believes in God, but who's suffered, and doesn't understand *why*. They *want* to disbelieve in a god, but at the same time can't quite do so. So they cry out, wanting to understand why all the hurt and injustice can exist? For another take on the same question, check out "Prayer" by Disturbed. |

Had no idea what the hell this song meant (a friend and I have pondered everything from just drug-induced ravings to the political mess that eventually led to the First World War). While searching for the lyrics recently, though, I found this link: http://ceinfo.unh.edu/News/GHogWeed.htm - the song, while a bit embellished, is telling an almost literal history of the introduction of the giant hogweed to England, and its spread. |

| I first heard this song, around the time I fell for my current GF - it was the summer of 2003. At the time, she and I had been friends for around 5 years, and cared deeply about one another. The problem was, as close as we were to one another, she was with someone else at the time. I remember listening to this song, hearing Kristy Thirsk's lyrics, and thinking "that's exactly how I feel". So, I was patient and, a year later, my patience paid off - we've been together for 7 months now. :) | |

Interesting....I had no idea that's what they were talking about. Oh, and the little part from "Volcano Girls" is a neat little reference to "I Am the Walrus" & also "Glass Onion" by the Beatles. There's a verse in "Glass Onion" that goes: "I told you about the walrus and me – man. You know that we’re as close as can be – man. Well here’s another clue for you all The walrus was Paul. " Very cool. :) |

OK, I can actually draw some parallels between this song and "Wong Way" by Sublime (http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=4178). Both songs talk about trying to keep a teenage girl off the wrong path. In "Wrong Way" it's already too late - she's on it, and he can't get her off of it. Of course, the character whose viewpoint the singer took isn't helping matters. In "A Question of Time" we have a different situation. The girl's not yet on the wrong path, and the narrator may be able to save her. However, I also sense that David's narrator has the same temptation that the one in the "Wrong Way" did. I just think he's resisted it better. I can relate to this song, actually - I've been there. Anyone else? |

well, "fuckin' go" just seemed so perfect there, ya know? The thing I love about Fiona Apple's lyric-writing is that it's so easy for me to relate to what she's saying. This song totally fits my ex-GF and I - the fact she and I can't seem to stay broken up, but can't seem to stay together is another issue. :( |

This song doesn't just relate to the British music scene, or even just the '80s. That's part of what makes it so great. Every era has had its "popular" music, but this century, with the boom of technology allowing more and more people to hear an artist, has created a flood of disposable pop songs. This was as true in the "Roaring '20s" as it is today. On the other hand, every era has also produced counterculture music. I mean, the bands the "hippies" listened to, such as Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Janis Joplin, the Doors, or even the Rolling Stones and later Beatles, were the "alternative" music of their day. They didn't get a lot of airplay back then, either, I understand. As for "panic", well, there's always something everybody's getting worked up over, isn't there? |

Forty thousand years ago was about when anthropologists believe humanity developed the concept of language and, with it, symbolic thought. What the band is trying to say, I believe, is that Western society, somehow, has fallen off the track, that we no longer live the way nature/God/whatever meant us to live. To some degree, he's right. The question is, is that entirely a bad thing? Sure, corporations have far too much power and influence over our daily lives. While we don't live simple hunter/gatherer lifestyles, humanity's legacy is technological advance. Without these advances, which are the legacy of language and symbolic thought, our fate will be no different than any other species on this planet - we'll spend our time here, then disappear. Personally, I'm not too fond of that idea. |
