Interpol – Obstacle 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
It may be my situation shining through when I hear this song, but I tend to think it's about a mutual breakup, and the hard months following when one person is wondering "was that really the right thing? why do I feel so shitty then?" And the other person has moved on. He plays cool, but his heart is (obviously) heavy and she sees through it. He wants her back, wants back the life he lost. She doesn't.

Joan of Arc – Diane Cool and Beautiful Lyrics 19 years ago
This song reminds me of a girl I know; she talks and talks but doesn't say anything; her favorite brand of cigarettes changes with whatever phase she's going through (California phase - she rolls her own, Coffee Shop phase - cloves, etc. etc.); claims certain songs as though they belong to her.

I tend to turn off my ears whenever she is around.

Joan of Arc – So Open; Hooray Lyrics 20 years ago
There's no telling how many times I've sat in my lawn chair, staring into the sky, stoned out of my gourd, listening to this song... "Her flypaper eyes," such great imagery that only Tim Kinsella himself could pull off.

Joan of Arc – It If Feels / Good, Do It Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the last line in this song; "I am over-the-counter-productive culture." Brilliant.

Make Believe – Witchcraft Lyrics 20 years ago
Although this is my least favorite song on the EP, I think the lyrics are great. It's an intriguing intersection between silly and profound.

Neutral Milk Hotel – I Will Bury You in Time Lyrics 20 years ago
This is a love song in the purest sense of the word - he is going to be with this person until the end (of the world? maybe...). It's a little dark, but hey, such is life. I put it on the first mix tape I made for my girl, almost a year ago.

Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 Lyrics 20 years ago
i have the album both on vinyl and on cd. he clearly sings "drink," but in the lyric sheet, it says "sink." either way, it means the same thing. i find it means because alcohol is a depressent, and to sink is to under (or depressed in) something it is just another way of putting it.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Joy in Mudville Lyrics 20 years ago
also, i forgot to mention that the title is from the story, "casey at the bat" by ernest l. thayer. its about baseball or something, i forget.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Joy in Mudville Lyrics 20 years ago
i think this song might be about lou reed; about being inspired by him to move to new york and relive the era in which lou reed and his contemporaries lived. the lyrics hint towards lou reed more than anyone else, calling him the "king of a gloomy disposition." the line, "brownstone up three flights of stairs" is from the velvet underground song, "i'm waiting for the man." there is a measurable sadness in the song, both in the music and vocals. perhaps ben was disappointed in how it had turned out? i, often, long for the days of the beat-era and can relate to this song.

Alkaline Trio – Jaked On Green Beers Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is AWFUL. it truly was a turning point in alkaline trio's history... for the worst. just about everything released after this song is pretty bad.

Arab Strap – Phone Me Tonight Lyrics 21 years ago
sounds like a general case of drunken desperation to me - getting fucked up and calling up an ex and telling them how badly you want them back, then feeling like an idiot about it in the morning.

Onelinedrawing – Aeroplanes Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is absolutely beautiful. if anyone has read the book, "the perks of being a wallflower", they may remember charlie talking about feeling infinite while listening to "asleep" by the smiths with his friends. this song has had a similar effect on me.

The Dismemberment Plan – The Jitters Lyrics 21 years ago
this song reminds me of high school and how badly i want to leave it behind me.

impossibledreamer, if you could kiss winona ryder and have everyone know, you know you would.

Hayden – Bunkbed Lyrics 21 years ago
this sounds like it was written by a ten year old, which, if it isn't, i think is done purposely by the author. it seems to carry that level of immaturity in its words and form. but in a good way, in a way that holds true to its meaning.

Pinback – Boo Lyrics 21 years ago
i put this on a mix tape after my girlfriend and i broke up. haha. that sounds so emo.

Death Cab for Cutie – Pictures in an Exhibition Lyrics 21 years ago
perhaps i'm being too literal but... to me, it seems as though the narrator is watching a play or a movie and the story relates to him, or a certain event in his life, so much that it gives him goosebumps. then it gets him down for a while.

Ryan Adams – To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High) Lyrics 21 years ago
i love this song. i've been working on a "get totally fucked up with your best friends" mix tape and this is definately on there. so is "polar opposites" by modest mouse and "heaven knows i'm miserable now" by the smiths.

Braid – Please Drive Faster Lyrics 21 years ago
i got my screen name from this song. its probably my favorite braid song. runners up include: "forever got shorter" and "a dozen roses".

Death Cab for Cutie – The Face That Launched 1000 Shits (Revolutionary Hydra cover) Lyrics 21 years ago
actually, ben didn't write the lyrics. if you'll look in the cd sleeve of "something about airplanes", it notes this. if i'm not mistaken, it is a cover of a revolutionary hydra song.

Sean Na Na – The Princess And The Pony Lyrics 21 years ago
these lyrics are fairly inaccurate. either way, it's a great song.

Bright Eyes – A Spindle, a Darkness, a Fever, and a Necklace Lyrics 21 years ago
for the longest time, i had thought it was the dude from son, ambulance and his kid. and i mean, it very well could be, i guess. i haven't actually read anything for or against that statement. but i could still be wrong.

Joan of Arc – Post Coitus Rock Lyrics 21 years ago
i want to listen to this song after doing it.

of course, i have to find someone willing to do it with me and listen to joan of arc afterwards.

i'm not sure which one would be hardest.

Pinback – Penelope Lyrics 21 years ago
the first hundred times you listen to it, you tend to think it's about a goldfish. then one day, you're listening to it, a bit hungover, and think that maybe it's about a drug or alcohol problem. then you listen to it again and realize you're reading too far into it. and then you think it's about a fish again.
