funny how the songs written 40 years ago are simpler than songs today, but just as (if not more) poignant. songwriting hasn't advanced in 45 years.
i like this song because it's more than "i'm so sad we're broken up"--this guy only wants what he can't have. as soon as she falls in love with him, he wants out.

i think the song's a little more abstract than actually being about wild animals... a maneater is basically "an irresistable woman who chews and spits out men after using them for some sort of gain -- be it sexual, financial or psychological." neko warned this guy that she's no good for him and yet he didn't listen and fell for her anyway. she has no apologies and points him to her previous warning. the "ending in bullets" is basically the harsh ending of the friendship/relationship. |

this song grew on me the more i listened to it. it feels like sitting in a crowded bar across from someone you used to date, or maybe you have a secret relationship that no one else knows about, and you're just making eyes at each other, smiling and saying everything without saying a word. he asks her not to speak because things are better when they aren't talking or dancing. i love that feeling. |

this song seems like it's about looking back on a difficult relationship that ultimately ended. at the time he was in such pain over the break-up, but over time got over it and moved on. sometimes he recounts the hurt and gets a little depressed ("some days, i just lie around and hardly exist..."). but overall the experience was good, even through the pain. kind of like "better to have love and lost than to never have loved at all."
though he cries more often now, he also laughs more now. "and the question is, was i more alive than than i am now?/i happily have to disagree." when you're post-breakup you feel like you want to die, but over time you become a better person. you experience pain but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. |

to the lines about the city ("this city is my home, construction noise all day long and gutter punks are bumming change")--if being in a city reminds you of someone (in a not-so-good way), you will definitely understand why they're in here. Seattle is my favorite city, but i feel just itchy and uncomfortable knowing the person who had my heart still lives there.
i'd never needed to look up the lyrics to this, just did it today for no reason. i never knew he said "i'll never admit that i loved you gweniviere." holy shit. wow. amped up the song's meaning for me tenfold. |

are you kidding? this song is amazing, why is there only one comment on it so far!?
anyone who has been in a relationship where one party is willing to work out their differences but the other party isn't really concerned can relate. to have someone you love say "it's too much work/i don't care, let's just give up" is heartbreaking. to turn it into such an upbeat-sounding song is great.
i think the whole meaning is pretty obvious. she's tried to stifle her hopes for the relationship, but deep down inside she loves him and wants it to work. she's got "a belief in the life of [their] love." she wants him to come around and reward her hopes for trying; that he'll "really want to hold [her] hand." she doesn't want to admit that it's a dead-end, hopeless relationship (the "point of the song" is to say goodbye).
i absolutely love these lines and the way she sings them:
"It was perfect you know
with just one little problem
the fact that it turns out
you don't really want it."
so concise, sums up any relationship that doesn't work out because one person doesn't care, whether it be an unrequited crush or a relationship that lasted for years. |

to me, this song is about a couple that's been together for a long time who might be growing apart, or at least growing sick of each other. in the last few lines, he knows that she's going to leave, but she's completely justified in doing so. what a horrible feeling, to know the one you love (or the one you say you love) is going to leave you soon, and for good reason.
i love the lines "sometimes i believe in god/punishing for lack of faith." what a clever break. |

this song sounds like two people who, basically, had a one night stand. "tangled up like balls of string" -- tangled in bed? they wake in the morning and realize what they've done--maybe they're good friends, maybe they're strangers, maybe they're cheating on their own lovers. either way, they can’t be together.
"i just said the first three words that popped into my head" -- he says "i love you" to her, but he doesn't mean it, or she can’t accept it. the last verse is really vivid in painting a picture of the girl telling him that she can't be with him, ("she whispers to me i was meant to be free, this life that we built is deadly") so she gets out of bed and leaves. |

i think this song is about a man who loves a woman who can't stay faithful to him. he loves her, he'll forgive her, he'll take her back every time she strays, but she still can't be with one man and it kills him inside. she's the "talk of the town" (people gossiping), and he even insists that if she wants the other guys, to just leave him and be with them. but at night when he’s with her, he tries to forget all her other lovers and tries to "live a quiet life" with her, as in, imagining she's not cheating on him. when she's "dressing him as a clown" it's her playing him as the fool: he knows, she knows, everyone knows, but he still pretends that she only loves him. he knows inside that "nothing i say could make you mine."
i also think "i can think it as good as you" is "fake it," as in, if you pretend you're only with me, i'll pretend too. i also think it's interesting that he sings "margot" in there, because margot tenenbaum was cheating on her husband blatantly in The Royal Tenenbaums. |

i can relate to this song so much in the past few months of my life! my boyfriend and best friend/roommate both totally betrayed me and showed me their true selves at the exact same time. hence, "the person i knew i didn't really know." we ended up breaking up and moving out (respectively). this song is just about things being absolutely shitty, your life being full of stupid drama ("i saw life turn into a tv show"), but when you're finally tired of everything, you just say to yourself, "fuck it, i'm gonna have a party" and move beyond all of it. |

this song sounds like a direct attack on pop stars of yesterday...
"you've hit me again one more time" refers to britney's spears' "hit me baby one more time." the "bye bye bye" is from Nsync.
"you're nothing but a bitch on strings." nsync had that thing with the marionettes... and the "you'll be back milking cows" is referring to Britney Spears, who is from the southern US, making fun of her like she is a hillbilly.
