Bob Dylan – This Wheel's on Fire Lyrics 1 year ago
The lyrics are quite obtuse in places and the verses don’t seem to gel with the chorus making it a puzzling song. It recently occurred to me that it might be about Joan Baez who as we know was a big influence on Dylan and who he may have been in love with earlier to the time this was written.
He may be anticipating a future when they spend some kind of time together again.
‘You’re the one that called on me etc.’ may be a direct reference to Joan using Bob’s popularity to promote the folk movement.
The lace references may indicate he may have considered marriage thus curtailing her activities (I’ve read she was a bit promiscuous) but in fact was unsure of her at that time - though he allegedly dumped her in the end.
The chorus may be him seeing his most prolific period as being ‘on fire’ and taking its own tumultuous path (until it ends?).
Who knows…

Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan Lyrics 2 years ago
@[ditkoquestion:39490] Yes, I like this analysis. To me the song was quite incoherent other than it was about someone on a mission, at first I thought it was about growing up and reaching the age where you feel equipped and able to make your mark but your explanation has added a dimension to that.

Paul Simon – Rewrite Lyrics 2 years ago
I like this song, witty lyrics and a good tune. I think it’s about someone who wants to be a better person (not that I’m saying Paul was bad in any way).
Not so much a rewrite as a recognition some things could have been done better and a desire to do the best. Maybe a reference to some God or a person who is helping at the end of the song.

Leonard Cohen – Who by Fire Lyrics 3 years ago
I was puzzled by these lyrics but reading all the other comments I think it relates to self-examination possibly using the concept of final judgement for emphasis. Who by fire, who by whatever.... however you got here, who shall I say is calling.... who are you really, what have you done, look at yourself, examine your conscience.

Joan Osborne – Pensacola Lyrics 3 years ago
Fantastic album right through. This song really hits me, great vocals, jaggy guitar, great lyrics. I think she finds her father, sees what a sad creature religion has turned him into and sees he isn’t going to change. I think it’s a swipe at a certain kind religious fanaticism.

Randy Newman – I Want You To Hurt Like I Do Lyrics 3 years ago
Randy generally songs in character to illustrate some failing in that character, and not himself. I think that is the case here. I find it particularly nasty when he tells his son ‘I just want you to hurt like I do’ and I have immense dislike for him for saying it. I think the message is that serially running out on people and then adding further hurt is not the way to behave etc.

The Rolling Stones – Luxury Lyrics 4 years ago
@[orphan_yachts:32837] Fair enough.... not great technically or lyrically but it’s quite catchy and good to sing along to, a bit of a social comment of sorts too. I like it. (It’s only rockn’ roll after all.

Leonard Cohen – Traveling Light Lyrics 4 years ago
Puzzling that he is travelling light (present tense) but also used to travel light. What about in between? Is the present tense a reference to casting off earthly worries and ideas and the past tense a reference to a time before those concerns became paramount. Perhaps times with Marianne.... and others.

Leonard Cohen – Treaty Lyrics 4 years ago
As usual every phrase could be analysed here but I think the gist is LC is at the end of his life and having spent a lot of time looking for God or a meaning he hasn’t found one he is fully reconciled with. He wants to call it a day, or agree to disagree about what’s right and wrong. He wants a treaty.

The Beatles – Come Together Lyrics 4 years ago
@[elBajista:31381] Very interesting and entertaining and it hangs together in the main. Of course it’s poetry and John’s poetry at that so God knows what it really means, of anything!
