Played an outdoor gig last summer and played a 30 minute Neil Young set. Afterwards some asked me if I knew any CSN&Y. I knew Ohio. Now I know one more. Great song. What I love about learning songs is memorizing the lyrics, the meanings really sink in. I love how the song transitions from first the parent teaching there children to later in life the children teaching the parents. What it all comes down to is we are very different in many ways but we’ve taught each other well and our core values are the same and will we need to do I sigh and like the song says “and know they love you” RIP David Crosby

This song like many other great songs is full of metefors and has deep meaning for the writers but is left to interpitation of the listener. To me what stuck out in my mind was “How i wish you were here” as I attended a funeral of a young person that was taken way to soon.

Neil Young – Heart Of Gold Lyrics

I play guitar and harmonica. This is the first song I learned to play on harmonic. When I play this song I don’t think to deeply about the lyrics and pick out each individual word line and phrase I just know the how I feel when i play it. I always feel like I’m searching but never quite achieving that heart of gold. For me it’s a personal thing. My own heart of gold I’m searching for. Another great Neil Young song that stirs emotions in people and it really doesn’t matter what the writers meaning was when it was written. Good music makes us feel That’s what’s important .

I just find it amazing how he has such insight at such a young age. Lines in my face getting clearer, have to loose to learn how to win, half my life in books written pages. Wow all insight that u only get from getting older and going thru shit. Don't know where he got his insight at such a young age(a previous comment said he was only 17) but great song.

Neil Young – Harvest Moon Lyrics

I think Harvest Moon is Linked to another song on this album Unknown Legend and maybe Hank to Hendrix as well. I think all three are about his relationship with his now ex wife Peggie. In 91/92 when these songs were written I believe there relationship was strong and they still had a deep respect for each other. I believe the line I'm still in love with you I want to see you dance again, doesn't mean dance in the literal sense but more I want to see you shine or glow or see you ride that Harley Davidson from the song Unknown Legend. In Hank to Hendrix he sings about heading for the big divorce. Maybe they were going through a rough patch and discussed it. In Harvest Moon I think he's acknowledging this rough patch but professing his deep love for her. Remembering, strangers watched you from afar, lovers loved you with all my heart. I see a thread running thru these three songs and can relate on so many levels in my on relationship of 30 plus years.

First want to respond to sveden and calls it lame and wussy. I agree with a lot of what he says about Neil and how great he is at being able to change back and forth from acoustic and electric. Nobody does it better or has been successful at it than Neil. The song or the album Harvest Moon is anything but lame. It's a brilliant album with beautiful songs such as unknown Legwnd and Hank to Hendrix. I'll give my take on the song Harvest moon in a later post

Every time I think I play enough Neil Young on my guitar I listen to an incredible album like this one and learn another one. Unknown Legend is the latest, very simple 2 chords but very effective. Interesting how one word can change the meaning of the whole song. The original lyrics, last line, new distance between us you and me. In many live versions he sings new closeness between us I think representing his close bond with Peggie. In 2014 the year he filed for divorce he was singing new distance between us. I recently heard a 2016 version were he sang closeness. Maybe they are at a place of acceptance of their post divorce relationship?? Just a thought?

As an added note. Neil's music covers a wide range of listener ages. I'm 56 and play guitar at a personal care home for seniors. One 90 something resident in particular really enjoyed my music. When lookin thru his cd collection I came across Neil Youngs Harvest Moon with a piece of masking tape on it. Written in black felt marker my favourite. I feel the same way

I think a lot of times we read to much into the lyrics. Bowie himself said his inspiration came from the movie 2001 Space Oddesy. It's exactly what it says, a fictional character Major Tom. From blast off to space walk to getting stranded in space. I just learned to play this song on guitar. Well written, interesting chord changes. Fun song to sing and play. The late great David Bowie his talent will forever be missed. RIP

With the current refugee situation this song has new meaning. The refugees are fleeing there country to find a safer and better life. Somewhere somehow someone must of kicked you around some. She's fleeing from a past relationship but Tom is telling her she doesn't have to (we've got something we both know it) they've a good relationship and she doesn't have to live like a refugee.

I saw a you tube video and Cat was introducing the song and he said this song I think is about me really. Not sure if he's referring to a relationship were he had to let someone go or if he's referring to himself going out into the world as a very young man to break into the music business and learning how wild the world can be. I think it's the latter but like all great songs it's open to the interpolation of the listener.
