How I see it is that the narrators realize that they have didifficult occupations or undesirable qualities that make them hard to love. The Engine Driver can never be around because he has to, obviously, drive a train cross-country cconstantly. The line man is not wealthy and his job is likely to get him killed. The money lender is cruel: "I am torture." Each of these narrators are telling their lover to get out if they can't handle their occupation. Then we get to the writer who has already been left and now he's longing to forget his lost love. Just my interpretation. |

| Instead of a miscarriage, I would tend to say it was more of a stillborn that they lay in the water which could also have led to more abuse because they finally got pregnant only to be let down in the end. | |
