Tom Waits – On the Nickel Lyrics 11 years ago
As others have said "The Nickel" is Fifth Street in LA -- skid row. It's to all the little boys who never had anybody to help them or to want them to be someone: "when your mamma's dead and gone, I'll sing this lullaby, just for you."

Whenever I think I might have something to tell the world, about the beauty and the sadness, the joy and the pain, I hear Tom Waits, and it's all there, said, once and for all. He is up there with Beethoven, when it comes to making sense of the human condition. I can only sit in awe.

The Pretenders – Night In My Veins Lyrics 11 years ago
Chrissie Hynde watched most of her friends die of heroin overdoses. It's not about heroin. Losers on the internet think everything is about heroin (Tiny Dancer?!?!), when, really, rock stars often have regular lives, too.

Joni Mitchell – Raised On Robbery Lyrics 11 years ago
Wow, you seem pretty angry at a fictional character. Did a woman leave you or something? This tune is a jam, more proof that Joni Mitchell is a musician's musician.

The Cowboy Junkies – Cowboy Junkies Lament Lyrics 11 years ago
It may be the best CJ song of all, but it was written by Townes Van Zandt. He toured, opening, with them for a year, and he wrote this for them. What an honor, to share the stage with Townes. One of the great songwriters of all time.

The Cowboy Junkies – To Love is To Bury Lyrics 11 years ago
This was recorded as part of "The Trinity Sessions". The whole album was recorded in a church in Toronto, in one day, with the band standing around a single ambisonic microphone. It is legendary now. They are such a good band, technically and melodically, and nobody has the same philosophy as they have in their songwriting.

That is beautifully said. Dear god in heaven, I wish I were Tom Waits.

Steely Dan – Midnight Cruiser Lyrics 11 years ago
"I am another gentleman loser". Fagan is the kind of guy who would make me honored to call me that. To be a loser is easy -- to be a gentleman loser is to know the sweet and the bitter.
