I think that your interpretation hits the nail on the head. It is the closest to what I tried to express, but I think that your words put it across a lot better.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 12 years ago
I've read through a few of the higher rated comments, but don't really agree with any of them, especially the ones that refer to a third person, i.e. Goteye's ex (refering to the part in which he is hung up on somebody he used to know, according to Kimbra). I think it really obvious that this is just between the two of them.

I think that pain is a theme of this song, and maybe the blame for the end of a relationship. The song starts with Gotye telling his point of view, and obviously, in his version he is the victim, and he got hurt by the girl completely avoiding him after it collapsed. But the song then makes a complete turn around and Kimbra tells us her part, like "All the times he screwed her over". We see the other side, and see that she was also hurt and angry (from her tone of voice).

The following chorus also reveals a lot via the singers' voices and the music getting louder and stronger (?), leading me into an illusion of an argument. I think that Gotye sounds more defensive and less... well, weepy, than in the first chorus. Also I find the fact that all Kimbra can get in there are oooohs and aaaahs (some angry ones while others are just sad) indicative of her disagreement with him and his interupting her, almost like Gotye doesn't want to listen to her side and wishes to be the only victim. After all, maybe she did need to cut him off, because he hurt her that much.

I also think that their tones troughout the song support this because Gotye sounds sad until confronted, while Kimbra's part is that of rising anger, perhaps from the frustration of explaining her side to deaf ears?

Overall, among other things that I haven't approached, I think that this song tries to illustrate how there are two sides to every story, but maybe when the story is so close to the heart we, being true selfish egotists, do not wish to see the the other side. It is difficult to pin blame in a relationship because both sides are so intimately involved and in the end both sides are hurt, much as we would like to see it as otherwise.

Um, well that's my take on it. I haven't focused too closely on the words, and this is definitely a song loaded with meaning, mine being only an interpretation of one facet. :)
