wow, this is a great song! wonderful lyrics inspired by a sad story. Agree about Gabriel's singing, not to mention that punchy organ by banks, and collins with the awesome fills. Guitars fit in so well, such a well constructed and crafted piece of music sigh, wish there was more music like this written today... maybe there is but I just haven't found it. Any recommendations? I really doubt this is about something as simple as a relationship between the singer and love interest... to me it's about dissention; the first portion is about being overwhelmed by the news media and the Bush administration at the time of 2003-2004 creating a climate of fear that way too many people bought into. The second stanza is about the relationship between USA and England, England bought in big time. The rest is resistance to keeping dissention down... This song was written just post the start of the Iraq war, after the Bush administration whipped up the idea that Iraq had stores of WMD. LouisaG., totally get the idea about sulphur man being the devil; sulphur was referred to as brimstone... but here are a couple more ideas: sulphur man is a man on drugs as sulphur is a major pharmecutical feedstock as well as being used by itself for treating diseases or Sulphur man is called that due to his skin tone? such as caused by jaundice, often a side effect of heavy drug use, disease, etc. or Sulphur man was a coal miner who survived a cave in (fate brought you next to ghosts... his coworkers who died next to him? and they are looking for a way out...) Sulphur is common in coal excavation, some grades are high in sulphur, and england has a lot of high sulphur coal... any thoughts? J |

Hmmm SteelEdge, I do not understand your use of the word "dogma" From Wikipedia: "Dogma is the established belief or doctrine held by a religion, or by extension by some other group or organization. It is authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted, or diverged from, by the practitioner or believers." Neil is one guy, no where have I seen him establish a doctrine or belief that was self-declared as authoritative. Have not read a lyric where he say's your wrong and I'm right. He IS saying keep YOUR dogma and leave me alone to figure my own way, which by the way is just as valid, fulfilling and moral than the way of Dogma. While I can't blame the sheep for a wolf hiding in sheep's clothing, it would be a lot easier to spot the wolf if there were no sheep, so to speak. Cheers! |

First comment for this song! I am surprised... love the energy and vibe of the song, kinda anthemic. Not sure I get the meaning tho... I love the quote "the only thing that I've ever found that's greater than it always sounds, is love", but mixing it with the chilly similes kinda makes that sentiment sad... maybe thats what makes the quote even more powerful? hope to hear more from these guys. |
