Band Aid – Do They Know It's Christmas Lyrics 7 years ago
I can see that "let them know it's Christmas" means not only what it says literally, but also to enable them to really feel it, both through first world generosity and through generally being able to celebrate and experience the Christmas spirit.

Lorde – Royals Lyrics 8 years ago
I think the minimalist instrumentals are intended to reinforce the meaning of the song. Lorde is portraying herself as a regular, down-to-earth kind of girl, and the song's down-to-earth sound is intended to reflect this.

Bruno Mars – When I Was Your Man Lyrics 8 years ago
It's interesting that, rather than wanting revenge, Bruno wants the best for the girl who left him. Even though she's gone, he still loves her, enough to want her to be with somebody who will treat her well.

@[Pixillate:5941] I think that "party like it's 1693" would have made much less sense to the average listener, who would recognise "party like it's 1699" as both a parody of the Prince song and a reference to the turn of the century as a momentous occasion. Maybe Amish see turns of centuries as momentous occasions just as we would.

Weird Al Yankovic – Word Crimes Lyrics 8 years ago
It said "You would not use 'its' in this case" - I've just corrected it to "it's". The video will help you to see why: it shows an example wrong sentence, "Every dog has it's day". The point is to show that "it's" is wrong here - you should be using "its".

Jermaine Stewart – We Dont Have To Take Our Clothes Off Lyrics 9 years ago
It's generally about not rushing into sex. While an AIDS epidemic might have been the motivation for the song, it's worth looking at it at face value as well. The singer is wanting to have fun with whoever in other ways, and leave having sex until ready. After all, sex isn't something to be taken lightly.

CATS – Memory Lyrics 10 years ago
On the literal level, it's about the dead of the night and the looking forward to start of the new day. At the same time, it's about a pining for times gone by and a desire for a new start in life. In the end, Grizabella sees happiness again, the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.

This song makes me think about my troubled life, but at the same time gives me hope.

Jason Donovan – Sealed With a Kiss Lyrics 10 years ago
Taken at face value, the song is about student sweethearts parting ways for the summer holiday, going to miss each other but safe in the knowledge that they'll see each other again when the summer is over.

But then I noticed a problem in that the song doesn't make sense in Jason's homeland! I then discovered an interpretation that makes sense. He has come to the northern hemisphere to study, and it'll be a "cold, lonely summer" because back home in Australia it is winter.

Eartha Kitt – Santa Baby Lyrics 11 years ago

Metal ribbons - what source are you going by? I've just listened on YT to a few versions performed by Ralph himself, and he sings "medal". Doesn't seem to be faking an American accent. Moreover, "medal ribbons" makes more sense to me than "metal ribbons"....

Donna Summer – MacArthur Park Lyrics 12 years ago
I came across this song only the other day. While I didn't take in the words of the verses, I quickly interpreted the cake as a metaphor for a broken relationship. They'd been together for a long time and worked hard on it ("took so long to bake it"). But now she is heartbroken, and feels she will never be able to love someone in quite the same way ("never have that recipe again").

Chris De Burgh – A Spaceman Came Travelling Lyrics 12 years ago
No, whoever submitted these lyrics, he had the face of an angel, not an angle. Also, from what I can make out it's "love for a child" rather than "the child".

But it seems a handful of lyrics sites, and even one YouTube video, have copied each other and so ended up with these errors in them.

Spice Girls – Christmas Wrapping Lyrics 12 years ago
Waitresses' version:
"Had his number but never the time"
This version:
"Met some guys but never the time"

Yet further references remain to _one_ guy.

Waitresses' version:
"Christmas by myself this year"
This version:
"Christmas with my mates this year"

Yet further down, it's almost the same:
"'I'm spending this one alone,' he said.
'Need a break; this year's been crazy.'
I said, 'Me too, but why are you? [...]'"

If they're going to change the words, they ought to look through the new words properly to make sure they still make sense!

Spice Girls – Goodbye Lyrics 12 years ago
According to WP, it was written as a tribute to the victims of the Dunblane massacre. Going by the time gap between this (13 March 1996) and Geri's departure (30 May 1998), my guess is that in 1996 they wrote it but didn't get round to releasing it. And so when Geri walked out, while looking at what to do for a first single as the four of them, they dug this up and changed some of the words.

But I'm not sure anybody still souls (or soals) these days.

Johnny Rivers – Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Lyrics 12 years ago
There are too many versions of the lyrics! But the basic premise is always the same. Long ago, young girls picked all the flowers. These girls have since grown up and married. Their husbands have fought in the war, died and been buried. But now we can't find their graves, because flowers have grown over them. But this just brings us back to the question of where said flowers are.

You could look at it another way, in which the final verse provides an answer to the original "where have all the flowers gone?" question: they're now over the graves of deceased soldiers.

Christmas Songs – Mary's Boy Child Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd like to know at what Bible reference Jester Hairston found the statement "Mary's boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day".

But there seem to be many versions of the song, which vary in which sections are included. "Oh a moment still worth was a glow" - this seems to be someone making a mess of the Boney M lyrics. I've also noticed the omission of the "Trumpets sound and angels sing" bit, which I assume is in the original though not in Boney M's version.

Lily Allen – Everything's Just Wonderful Lyrics 12 years ago
Both lines are there. The first part of the verse is essentially in four-line stanzas - "And it's inevitable" is the last line of one, "Now don't you think" is the first line of the next. See my comment.

Two corrections:

It seems to me
We're spiralling
Outta control
And it's inevitable

Now don't you think
....

("And it's inevitable" is not INSTEAD OF "don't you think" as two people have said - the line's simply been left out of the posted lyrics)

Oh yes, I'm fine

(booklet says "yeah" instead of "yes", but the next word is "I'm" not "so" in any case)

Lily Allen – Everything's Just Wonderful Lyrics 12 years ago
Happy/sad conflict seems to be a recurring theme in Lily's songs. She rants about the problems in her life and the wider world, but at the same time she is trying not to feel too let down.

Oh yes, I'm fine
Everything's just wonderful
I'm havin' the time of my life.

This might be not so much sarcasm as exaggerated optimism - like "my glass is full" instead of "my glass is half full". Or maybe she's telling people she's fine because she doesn't like to keep on about these issues.

Grease – Summer Nights Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't help but wonder whether the double meaning of "It turned colder" was intended.

The weather turned colder - after all, it's about an affair that happened in the summer.

And the relationship turned colder.

Good if they've managed to stay friends in any case.

Jason Donovan – When You Come Back To Me Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is ambiguous in an interesting way.

Maybe the lovers are geographically separated because one has gone away on holiday or business - in which case "oceans apart" might be literal.

Or maybe they are just on a break from each other, in which case the "oceans apart" is a metaphor for the emotional separation. He wants to get back together, but there's an overriding sense of needing to let the break run its course. I've felt this myself while torn apart from a special friend.

For a long time I heard the fourth line as "I need you, and my arms need you to hold". I still like this better - the arms themselves are being assigned a sense of need for this affection.

Madness – House Of Fun Lyrics 13 years ago
Some of you have pointed out that people believe the song to be child-friendly because they don't know its meaning. But that might be by design - the uninitiated listener, especially a young child, is expected to take the song at face value, while the hidden meaning is something for those in the know. The shop assistant didn't understand the boy's euphemisms - you can hardly expect the average member of the general public to understand them!

Crash Test Dummies – Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics 13 years ago
There's that, and there's also the possibility that the boy had promised his friends at school/wherever that he would bring them in, and so the embarrassment lay in having to break the news that he no longer has them.
