Modest Mouse – Heart Cooks Brain Lyrics 13 years ago
My brain's the cliff, and my heart's the bitter buffalo

The meaning of this line sort of struck me as showing how the pain in our heart, those emotions we have to deal with, sting, and your brain is the cliff. You're standing at the edge of the cliff and all the emotional stress life brings is constantly pushing your mind over.

I think this song is about the fruitless pursuit of quick sexual satisfaction. You're looking for that magical feeling of fulfillment, but you are trying to get it out of cold, empty sex or porn. The reality of it is that all the sex, porn, shit like that isn't going to bring you to fulfillment, it's deeply loving another person, it's something that takes patience, it's something that you can't just jump into like an animal. "Paint yourself white, and fill up with noise," try to fill yourself up with as much sensory pleasure as possible, download 50 gigs of porn, have sex with 5 girls at the same time, more, more, more, "but there will be something missing."

"Now that you've found it, it's gone, now don't you feel it, you don't, you've gone off the rails." Amongst all this extreme sexual pleasure, you think you finally have reached that point of fulfillment, but once you feel it, it's gone like it never happened. Because loveless sex and porn isn't going to truly make you happy, it's only going to emulate happiness for a little bit, it becomes sort of like an addiction. You think you are so close, like you are reaching out, only inches away from happiness, when you slip and fall back to feeling empty again. Maybe if you took it just a little bit farther, you would reach that point, but that's the trick of it, you won't.

The song also covers the other end of the spectrum, the restrained, guilt-driven religious side of sex. Don't think about things like that, don't explore those feelings, you will go to hell, it's immoral. You must wait until "that moment" when you get properly married and have sex.

Both, in my opinion, are equally flawed. On one side you have animal-like satisfaction without fulfillment, and on the other, you reject those natural sexual urges. I think a balance needs to be found to avoid falling into either of these traps.

Great interpretation.

I like the way you used "applied" as well. Maybe this isn't THE interpretation of the song, but just something these lyrics could be applied to. These lyrics aren't specific or direct, but just capture a general feeling.
