Actually I think this song is about a guy who is losing his girlfriend, he knows that she will leave at any giving minute and he is scared. Those are words of desperation, basically threatening her. He doesn't want it to end. They expected that their relationship would get better with time, at least better than before, but it didn't. But he still wants to make it work. "Do you really think you can just put it in a safe behind a painting, lock it up and leave?" always sounded like "Do you really think you can just put our relationship in the past, get over it and just carry on with your life?". He threatens start a war if she leaves and that's because he's scared of losing her. "Whatever went away I'll get it over again, I'll get money I'll get funny again". When you are young you never feel like you can really lose something. You always think that everything will be alright sometime. This is like denial, you don't accept that something can definitely go wrong, no fix. "You were always weird but I never had to hold you by the edges, like I do now". She always had that free spirit, some people like to have their own spaces in their relationships, but now it feels like she's really trying to leave. Now he needs to constantly hold her, because he knows that she'll go away sometime. Well, if she does, he's gonna start a war. |

I don't think this song is about sex. I think that it's just about the girl that left him and he keeps remembering everything they went through together. Milk is because he remembers her problems with drinking milk, and that's normal, when you break up you keep recalling those small things that the other person had that you particular remember most. Like, I had this girlfriend that lived near a river and that river had a terrible smell and after we broke up, I kept remembering her whenever I felt a bad smell (that's really fucked up, I know, but still, love works with association most of the times). He keeps listing stuff that makes him remember the girl: Her hourglass body Her problem with Milk How she used to bartend her friend's parties, How she used to loan him her toothbrush, Their drinks, their matinees, everything... And by the "Kill me" and "Said his on his own, but his own is you", you can see that it really hurts to be away from her and that all the memories are only torturing him |

Following the concept of the album (the death of a relationship) I believe this is that part that most that have lived there went through: the re-enconter. After everything that happens you star feeling good again, you realize you are better off without that relationship and now you can do whatever you want (Safe Without) but suddenly you go to a party and you meet her. She's there and you can't help but feeling bad again. Then you just can't avoid a conversation and then the worse that can happens: you kiss her. If you ever lived that situation, you will understand the confusion that he is going though: "Please explore my love's endurance And stay, stay Please endure my love's exhortations " - You beg to her explore the moment of weakness you are having and take you back. You didn't what to be with her, but what the fuck, you are already there. But of course of listen to a lot of " No fucking way"s and No's "On this side You wanna see that There's no change And somewhere to stay On this side You're gonna see that There's no change Nowhere to stay" - You are reasonable enough to say "If you stay with me, baby, be aware that I didn't change and nothing change and everything will be just the same fucking way", but you are 100% reasonable, you still want her to Try It On one more time. I've been through this lately, it was awful, you are not sure what you want, you were certain it is good for you to stay away, but once again, you can only think about getting back together again. Also, "All of the ways" is a great continuation to that, since you can see that she tells him that she already is dating another person and she won't go back to him. |

Well, I understand the meaning of this song just like it was previously explained, however I think it's not about losing faith. I think it's about still having faith, but feeling let down. Like "nobody loves you anymore and I'm having hard times in loving you because this word is crazy and you don't even tell me your name! How can you live with that?" - Like if Ezra had this close relationship with God and he is sad that God is not showing himself never and that he's watching the whole word losing their faith, but he still wants to believe, he just doesn't know how anymore. It's like Ezra is discussing his relationship with God "I made my mistakes and you made your mistakes and we only let it go". And somehow, I think that Ezra intended to show that even those who say they love God, they don't really love God, everyone wanted him, wanted all the miracles, but they don't really love him. It's a really REALLY deep song and as every great piece of art, it can be seen by several perspectives :) |

I think the whole album is about breaking up, each song follows each step of breaking up with a girl you really love and how you react. In Summer Well, he betrayed his lover with another girl and was playing games with her, but she found out and they are no longer together. Now, in Memory Serves it's just how he is ashamed and resented for what he did. Just like everyone who make something bad to a person they love, he keeps trying to please her "It would be so nice to take you / I only ever try to make you smile". So, just like everybody who feels guilty, the memories, even the good ones, only serves to make him feel worse and more guilty about what happened. He is learning the fact that it's over, that he fucked up and there is no going back, but he sure has hopes that she will eventually forgive him and get back. Since everyone have the same opnion about the song, I assume I might be wrong, but I always had a different point of view of this song. My vision of it: Andy is not the greatest athlete, but he has potential, and his friend (the lead singer) is the only one who gives him support to keep praticing. "Hey shut up" would be to those who didn't believe in Andy's potential for sports. But a stalker girl appears, and the lead singer knows she is around everytime, just watching him, and that she is no good. In the end, this girl gets Andy and the lead singer feels disappointed since it will be on the way of Andy's athletic carrer. In the second part, I see like Andy is getting away of his friend, and the lead singer asks his phone, because he wants to tell him to leave his "legacy in gold" instead of giving it away for a bad girl. I know it may sound crazy, but since it is my favorite song by The Killers since I know the band, I had time to think about it hahaha |
