On the Live gigs, Cooley often tells the story before he starts this song. The story goes that he used to live in a crappy apartment above an old guy who wouldn't mind him throwing wild parties, being up late, the television blarring loud and openly breaking some laws but "the second he so much as looked at a guitar", the old boy below him would call the cops. He could be playing really quiet so Cooley himself could just about hear it and somehow the old boy was able to hear and call the cops. There are some excellent youtube videos of him giving a full explanation before he plays the song which are worth watching just because cooleys so funny... add to that a kick-ass song and this is one of my fav live performances by the truckers. |

In the late 60's Dennis Wilson picked up a couple of female hitch-hikers and took them back to his house for sex, afterwards, he left them in the house and went off to the Beach Boys recording studio. Returning to his house around midnight he was met in the driveway by CM and after a brief discussion went inside to see the house full of charlies followers and decided the open relationships and drug use suited him so let them stay. They crashed his car, wrecked his house, basically took money from him (apparently he lost about $100k in a few months back in the 60's - that would be the equivelent to around $750k in todays currency) and Dennis paid to clear up all of the groups STDs (described as the "largest Gonorrhea bill in history"). Charlie wanted to be a musician and played some songs for Denny who in turn, put him in contact with Gregg Jakobson and Terry Melcher who took some interest but eventually decided that they wouldn't offer him any kind of contract. During that period Dennis was growing worried about Charlies increasingly erratic behaviour and left them in the house, knowing they'd run out of money and have to leave, which ultimately they did... eventually. Dennis stole one of Charlies songs and re-worked it and released it as the above song (creditted to him) and that really pissed Charlie off. From what I've heard, he was okay about Dennis using the song but was unhappy about not being creditted as a writer... and furious that he changed the words ("you can mess with anything by me but you don't mess with my words" - CM). As Dennis moved about and Charlie, still hopeful of a recording contract, found it harder to find him, he made some of his followers go to Terry Melchers House (now being rented by peadophile Roman Polanski) and "kill everyone inside". All the talk of Charlie being the most evil man in history is probably backed up by the fact he had people killed over a few lyrics. I believe Dennis later returned to his empty, smashed up house. |

Agreed, Most of his songs are actually about love and women. Why does everyone think that because someone takes drugs every song of theres are about drugs? Look on the rolling stones comments... "this songs about heroin", "this is about Keiths drug use" etc, etc, etc. I smoke weed buy none of my songs are about drugs. People with little information and a platform to make comments is a bad mix. |

Amazing song about soldiers returning home with injuries. I know this is a cover of the Tom T Hall original but I just love this version. Truckers have always been story tellers so I guiess it makes sense to use the ultimate story tellers songs themselves when putting together a covers album. Probably more relevant today then ever. |

I actually like this Beach boys version. I, like most people, will pick an original over a cover any day and I still do with this song but the BB version isn't bad. I like the sax solo.

When director Nick Broomfield sent a working edit of the film, I was so disturbed by the subject matter that I couldn't even watch it. Aileen Wuornos led a tortured, torturing life that is beyond my worst nightmares. It wasn't until I was told that Aileen spent many hours listening to my album Tigerlily while on death row and requested "Carnival" be played at her funeral that I gave permission for the use of the song. It's very odd to think of the places my music can go once it leaves my hands. If it gave her some solace, I have to be grateful.

I was probably about the same age when I saw it on MTV - can't believe it was that long ago. This song always reminds me of Aileen. Normally I'd want murderers put to death but I can't help but think she was raped and beaten by the first guy, Richard Mallory and was so troubled by what happend that her mind convinced her that anyone who made a sudden movement, maybe tried to bargin a better price etc was about to attack her again. She really was crazy. Wish I could listen to this song and try to picture what Natalie Merchant was living when she wrote it... but always I think of Aileen and the way in which she was killed unlawfully by the United States. |

Yeah, I watched it again last night. Very sad what happened to Aileen. Can't help but think she probably was raped and beaten by the first guy and killed the others in a diminished mental state. I'm not against the death penalty, for it in fact, but she was crazy and the United States murdered her. I love this song but can't help but think of Aileen when I hear it. Sad that such a beautiful song reminds me of such wicked deeds (I'm referring to her muder rather than those people she "murdered"). |

THANK YOU!! I've come on to pretty much say exactly that. As a song MEANINGS website, I'd expected everyone to have written that but instead people are leaving comments such as "great song", "Amazin' solo" etc. The only thing missing from your meanings is that he had no intention of going into the pub but wanted to take shelter from the London rain... but that's not really relevant except it directly addresses the line "Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down".
BTW, (for everyone else who may have been offended) I'm not suggesting this isn't a great song or an amazing solo as I've just finished learning it on guitar but that's not the really the point of songmeanings.net |

I don't believe that Neil was a Pall Bearer. It's one of those rock star myths that the public seem to have accepted without any real foundation. My understanding is that the fued was real to start with but Neil called Ronnie to straighten everything out and they got talking and realised that they were both on the same side and became relitively close thereafter. I love the line in Sweet Home Alabama that goes "In Birmingham they love the Governor, Boo, boo, boo" in reference to George Wallace. At first I didn't pay attention to the Boos but listen to it again, they are clearly boos for the Governor and his racist stance against intergration. Ronnie is wearing a NY T shirt on the Street Survivors album cover - It's believed that Neil personally chose to wear the t-shirt to quash the story of a fued. Sadly 3 days later, we all know what happend. Of course, I can't be completely sure of any of what I've written as I've gained this info from numerous sources, none of which were Ronnie or Neil. |

Excellent song. Love hearing this live on the Live from Austin and the dirt Underneath Albums.
"I can dance on my own grave, Thank you!" - Love that line, Think I may get it tattooed on my body somewhere.
This song is about Greg Smalley - I'm sure the link above explains but I can't open it for some reason. My understanding of Smalley is that he was a fantastic guitar player who was in many bands. He was diagnosed with HIV (AZT is a HIV+ Drug) and spent his last few years doing almost a show a night in the hope (as Paterson Hood explains on the Dirt Underneath CD) that doing what he loves might make him live a little longer, or at least a little better. |

On the DBT website Hood says that someone asked Cooley what this song was about and his reply was "It's really hard for me to find a suit that fits me right." I have no idea how the song is about that but that's the only explanation I can find right now.

I have no idea if there's any back stories to this song but for some reason I see this as a father telling his daughter that he'll always be there and be supportive but it could be a wife, girlfriend, mother or just a friend (I assume female because of the put a smile back on your pretty face" line). No where near the best DBT song but I love almost everything they do. |
