St. Vincent – Cheerleader Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think its about a relationship, but not necessarily a romantic relationship between two people. That interpretation is far too simple. Perhaps St Vincent is singing about a relationship between two nations? The line that suggests this is: "I've seen America with no clothes on." Who has seen America naked and exposed? Who doesn't want to be its cheerleader anymore? Perhaps it is a country in Latin America/Asia/Africa/Middle East that's sick of "eating dirt" and "playing dumb" in order to appease the Imperialist power. Thoughts? |
Oh Land – Alive/Awake Lyrics | 12 years ago |
In the first stanza, I believe its "'cause there were maggots in that CORE" instead of care, because it makes me sense. I think she was going for a fruit analogy. Really enjoy the lyrics to the song, by the way. "I was strong I believed, now it takes nothing to disintegrate me" is just lovely. |
Oh Land – Lean Lyrics | 12 years ago |
@roland44 I think yours is a great interpretation. It seems to me that the singer is trying to persuade a reluctant person who helped her in the past to accept her help now because s/he needs it. I can easily imagine that the song might be addressed to a father, as fathers tend to have a lot of pride when it comes to something like this. Beautiful song by the way. |
Rebecca Black – Friday Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Hahahaha. Brilliant. I agree that this song reveals the tragedy of our human condition, especially the whole 'front seat-back seat' dilemma - too many choices, got to make our minds up. Poor Rebecca Black is consumed by her indecision! |
Coma Cinema – Business As Usual Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I can't make out all of the missing lyrics to this song but this is what I hear: The sad queen of everything, buys her way into your dreams Burn the evil palace down, drag the corpse out of the ground ??? at heaven's gate, to purify this holy weight Drag your claws across the sea, crying over everything you eat Held apart, begging your fear, to hold your hand for one more year Prostitutes for hope align the bad ideas inside your mind You turn your thoughts away from love towards slave driving comic blood Giving birth and in the prison pit, no cares 'cause its easier to quit No one cares it's easier to quit (X4) |
Lykke Li – Rich Kids Blues Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I agree that that the lyric is probably "wild-eyed" ways. Also, I'm positive its: "FOR delirious gestures are so easily misread." Otherwise, looks good! |
The Sounds – Diana Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I love the reoccurring "nobody's fool" lyric. I think its key to the meaning of the song. Being nobody's fool (not allowing herself be used or tricked) and refusing to play by the rules is the mark of a social rebel who does things her own way, perhaps because she fears manipulation and wants to be in control always. That is Diana in this song (Ooo Diana you never play by the rules/cuz you're nobody's fool). However, if Diana is adamant on being 'nobody's fool' then she will never experience real love or happiness. Refusing to trust others and not letting herself be used ever gets her nowhere - Maya indicates that she knows Diana is still unhappy even though she fakes she is not (Full of grace that is not what I see/I see a girl full of misery). Maya already discovered this herself and so she's giving this advice (I told myself now I'm telling you/this is the last time I'm nobody's fool). There's more to the story in this song but I'll leave it up to others to post :) I wrote enough... |
The Sounds – Yeah Yeah Yeah Lyrics | 13 years ago |
My guess is BFI = "Big Fucking Idiot" (source: urban dictionary) |
Lykke Li – Unrequited Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Some of lyrics to this song are incorrect/missing. This is my best stab at interpreting them; can't figure out one line. Someone help me out! Once again it's happening All this love is unrequited Twice the pain, the suffering All my love is unrequited All my love is unrequited That must mean I live again And get back what I gave my men Get back what I lost to them All the shame, this crying game All my love, I've been denied it All my love is unrequited And I know it so well I could play it by ear Looking back at myself While the violin plays ??? Another stitch to my wound Another inch in this thread I know it all too well, when Once again its happening All our love has gone divided All my love is unrequited All my love is unrequited |
The Ropes – I Don't Like To Get Dirty Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I feel the need to defend this song a little bit. First of all, the narrator of the song (assuming s/he's female) is conveying that she hates living and hates people, but also that she doesn't want to die either, because she imagines she'll experience discomfort although she's dead. Since she's still around, then, she's willing to help other people out with whatever they need even though she feels nothing but contempt for them. I always interpret the lyrics as honest (and I mean REALLY honest) self-criticism. This is how the singer really feels, but she recognizes how absurd and seemingly contradictory the feeling is when spelled out. |
Natalia Kills – Zombie Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'm excited that I'm the first to comment before Natalia Kills and this song explode onto the airways! I guess I should say something about its meaning, even though its so obvious I almost don't see the point. The zombie is a boy the singer falls in love with, presumably while they were fucking (or perhaps dancing). She wants to know whether or not he's truly into her the way she's into him, because his blank expression - not to mention, habit of ignoring her - suggest that he's not. |
Eliza Doolittle – Skinny Genes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
She has said in interviews that the song is all made up (but it could just as easily not be). If that is true, then the train line is kind of like a fantasy within a fantasy |
Phantogram – 10,000 Claps Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Sounds like the song is narrated by someone who is weary of touring and being on the road. More generally, the lyrics speak of being bored with life and the superficial novelties of a well-established routine, to the point of wanting to die. Better to die (go home) than become a crazy cat lady (or artist) who only watches time pass - I'm not sure if that is Phantogram intended for this song but that's what I get out of it lol. |
Orchid – I Am Nietzche Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Thanks, that was very helpful and thought-provoking. I find that this song's message continues to be relevant. Sometimes, you have to be open to experiencing new, painful, foreign ideas to truly grow. Sometimes, to learn from the other is not easy; it is a struggle, requiring us to put aside our egos for a second and try to meet the other halfway. At my liberal arts college (not Amherst lol), they now teach us to write for the reader - to produce according to the tastes of the consumer. What happened to the give and take between the reader and the author? What happened to friendship? Btw, I also completely agree that when interpreting a work of art (and this song definitely qualifies as a work of art, no?) it is inimical to ignore the context, in this case the album's song order. |
Chiodos – Caves Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song definitely is in part a reference to the Greek philosopher Plato and his Allegory of the Cave. The Cave is the world of ignorance, illusion, and shadows; outside the Cave is the real world with real knowledge, true beauty, and deeper meaning. The song is saying that people need to get out of the Cave and stop hiding in their fantasy and ignorance, even though to due so is to risk pain and ridicule (as ignorance is bliss), because reality offers them so much more: it is better to risk it all and fail than never take any risks and spend the rest of time wondering. |
Innerpartysystem – American Trash Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm American trash and I know it. |
Bright Calm Blue – The north bottoms Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Sounds like a critique on urban planning. The power involved; the asymmetrical distribution of services in a city based on socioeconomic factors; the aesthetic blandness of a designer city. |
Dragonette – You Please Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I agree with alomaxrawwr and IGETAROUND as to the meaning of the song. I think though its "You're up there, WITH SOMEBODY finally getting over me" instead "some believe" cuz this would make more sense for the song. Its suggesting that her ex-lover now has a new girlfriend - which complicates things further =D |
Alesana – Hymn For The Shameless Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Like many of the songs on the album, the artist is reflecting on his growing insanity; a part of him recognizes that he is going crazy. He knows he is letting his passion for death take him over. He is starting to love killing more than he loves Annabel (if she suddenly was alive, he thinks he might kill her too). |
Circle Takes the Square – Disclaimer To The Self Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that CTTS is describing their own music here, first saying what its not (ie romantic, beautiful, angelic) then saying what it is: an emotional catharsis (therapy) with chicken-scratched lyrics by demons. "this is the new cutting edge"= pun, CTTS avant-garde and it cuts you, so deep! |
Orchid – Stagnant Lyrics | 14 years ago |
critique of privileged intellectuals who do nothing, know nothing because they are isolated from the world in the comfortable "ivory tower" |
Transistor Transistor – A Sinking Ship Full of Optimists Lyrics | 14 years ago |
On one level the lyrics are saying when you're dead, that's it. You are reduced to a physical body; your identity's gone. We're in denial about it though because "we swear we're not like this" - no one wants to accept this conclusion. I think it could also be a commentary on the futility of martyrdom. When you are alive you can speak, you can explain yourself, and by this you can change things. When you are dead any words you could have said are dead as well. No can really speak them for you. |
