When you heard the story of Orpheus and Eurydice when I was younger, it's always such a frustrating story because you're left wonder why he didn't just wait until it's over. He's given simple instructions and he breaks them and therefore fails and that is very unsatisfying for a younger audience. The climax of the song, however, is where I think the song gets across its main point: "Now that you're older/Then you will discover/It's never over" The song somewhat cynically arrives at the conclusion that Orpheus isn't at fault for turning around, because the ascent from the underworld with a loved one is never-ending, and his quest was doomed from the start. I personally like this take on the myth, as it maintains its tragic element and perhaps expands upon it with a more modern take on love but leaves the reader with less frustration with its protagonist. |
