Tom Petty – To Find A Friend Lyrics
|
The lines about "it changed their lives/it changed their plans" seem to be about children getting buffered by all of this, and are achingly sad. Very well painted by a guy who never got enough credit for his lyrics. |

Kanye West – New Slaves Lyrics
|
Blacks (and everyone else) might be more beholden to the whims of corporations than we'd like, but for a rich and famous hip hop star to draw an analogy to being a "slave" is an insult to anyone who ever felt the crack of a whip or wore chains, and like so much bad high school poetry.
Great riff, though. |

Veruca Salt – Seether Lyrics

The Beatles were at least tweaking their fans with that line from the song "Glass Onion." You might also know about the "Walrus is Dead" prank that caused people to think McCartney had died, which the Beatles naturally thought was hilarious. If you look at the meaning for "Seether" offered by walternate on 2/4/13, it kind of does make sense for Veruca Salt to name-check in the same way. Bit of a stretch but not ridiculous. |

The Traveling Wilburys – Like A Ship Lyrics

One of Bob Dylan's best tunes of the '80s, as were most of his Wilbury's contributions ... I think his participation in this group gave him a second wind when he needed it the most. |

Bob Dylan – Jokerman Lyrics

Given that this came out in 1983, it's a lot more likely that he was talking about the smooth-talking bullshit artist who was president at the time. |

Son Volt – Straightface Lyrics

Can't believe no one has commented on this awesome song, although I have *no* idea what it's about. I do like: "You demonize what you don't understand/
Darts surround your heavy, heavy hand" ... reminds me of a few talk radio hosts. |

Paul Simon – Graceland Lyrics

There's a documentary on Netflix right now, and Paul Simon definitively says Graceland was a filler word. He also says this is his favorite song out of his whole catalog. I can see why! |

III is a sometimes overlooked album. Quieter and more introspective but quite possibly their best. |

stoneo68 and MyPrivateAltamont are both correct on their lyrics corrections. Evidently written out by someone too young to know who Rod Carew is ... |

I don't know it for a fact, but I can't think of another Willie he would be referred to other than Nelson.

The Replacements – Answering Machine Lyrics

@Robot Rock, which is exactly how I found Westerberg in a NY lounge bar the one time I met him in person back in 1990. Approachable guy, did not mind at all being chatted up, maybe because the "friends" he was with didn't provide much in the way of conversation. ;) |

The Kinks – Black Messiah Lyrics
|
The "Black Messiah" is probably former Ethiopian ruler Haile Selassie, revered as a deity by Rastafarians and scorned as a Marxist by others, as underscored by the reggae beat.
Aside from that, the lyrics seem a little jumbled and confused ... "white's white and black's black and that's that," and then a verse later "everybody's got to live with a little less hate." Come again, Ray?
Challenging everyone to think about their "racist tribal tendencies" as mycology101 suggests is timeless. The gratuitous use of ebonics ("they brown and I white"), not so much. |
