Belly (US) – Angel Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[StarEyed:31283] I looked up the symptoms associated with borderline personality disorder, but I'm just not seeing the connection to any of the elements in this song. |
Veronica Lake – Threnody Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song pretty clearly drew inspiration from Dorothy Parker's poem of the same name. The refrain "Lips that taste of tears, they say, are the best for kissing" is taken directly from Parker's poem. This song also seems to use a similar rhythm and rhyme scheme to the poem, to the extent that you can sing the poem using the song's tune. Kind of an interesting tribute. |
Belly (US) – Dusted Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[descendent:17805] I always assumed this was about drug abuse. The question in my mind being: Is the person just "playing" dead in the cellar? Or passed out in drugged delirium? Or is it implying that they are actually dead, and that the singer is in denial about that fact? |
Belly (US) – Angel Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Funny, to this day I'd swear the lyric is: "I'd still rather have a name." In my mind the whole song is kind of a lament to the futility of human desire before the divine will (or, if you like, the vast uncaring nature of the universe). The singer is begging for this one seemingly simple thing (a name?). God dispatches powerful cosmic forces to literally reshape the geography instead. The world is dramatically altered, but the singer isn't complaining that the alteration was bad, just that it wasn't the little thing they wanted. As a theist, this isn't an unfamiliar feeling: "But this is the thing I wanted! Why did you go to so much trouble to give me this unrelated thing instead?" |

I don't know if my attempt to transcribe these lyrics from singing are perfect. Truth be told, I wasn't even going to bother doing so. But I felt kind of obligated after looking them up on other websites and discovering they've been pretty much universally mistranscribed in really blatant and obvious ways. If you know I've made a mistake and have corrections I'll try to amend this entry. |

Murder Beach – The Cheat Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Just generally love this song. Because of the title it makes me think of the identically named character from Homestar Runner though. |
Murder Beach – The Cheat Lyrics | 7 years ago |

The Receptionists (Vassar NY) – Soren Loved Regina Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song seems to be about Søren Kierkegaard's relationship with Regine Olsen. The last verse I didn't really get. But recently figured out it's probably a reference to the "Knight of Infinite Resignation" element of Kierkegaard's philosophy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_of_faith#Knight_of_faith_and_the_knight_of_infinite_resignation |
The Arc Lamps – Good Friday Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I wasn't sure about the lines starting: "Tea towels..." and "Just scanning..." Suggested corrections welcome. |
This Is the Kit – The Turnip Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I think this song might be about pregnancy and giving birth: "There was a time and there was a place when we were one." "And it was so still and it was so dark and the place was my tum." - Baby was in my belly. "And there came a time and there came a place when the bun was well done." "We had waited the time. We had counted it out. We had done all the sums." - Baby was past the due date, time to come out. "So they tried to coax with the needles and smoke." "And they stuck in the pins and they burned my toe." - Doctors induced labor (unclear) "And the moon was pink and then the moon turned dark, you had started to start. (etc.)" - Labor was taking quite awhile. "Oh, and your power! Oh, where should I start?" "Start to explain how lucky we are." - Being in the delivery room when the baby is just born can be irrationally euphoric. Even afterward, despite hardships, there can be a feeling of intense joy and gratitude about this new little living creature in your life. "Cause he stayed with me and he stayed with you, holding on all the the time." "And he stayed awake and he didn't sleep and the next day we cried." - Possibly something went terribly wrong. But possibly just a reference to the first few months of massive sleep deprivation from having a crying infant, which can be surprisingly and mind-alteringly awful. |
Shoestrings – Theme from Kiss Me Goodnight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Didn't know you could edit these. Should be fixed now. |
Shoestrings – Theme from Kiss Me Goodnight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
N.B. - Didn't notice it at the time, but the title of this song appears cut off. It should actually read: The theme from Kiss Me Goodnight. Maybe the parser choked on some punctuation or something. |
The Owls – Afternoon Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Update: The lyrics to the Afternoon Song were written by Stephen Burt and the music arranged and performed by The Owls as part of the "MPR: Songs From Scratch" project. During this project other musicians also used the same lyrics to create their own songs.
