The Kooks – Vicious Lyrics 15 years ago
Is the "I do want to go to Chelsea" a reference to "I don't want to go to Chelsea"? Seems like a pretty large coincidence otherwise.

Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics 15 years ago
Does anyone else think that the riff, especially at the beginning, sounds a bit like See No Evil by Television?

The Beach Boys – I Just Wasn't Made For These Times Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe it does take maturity to get the full scope of this song, but I'm fourteen and I feel I understand it pretty well. I live in a time which, certainly musically, but in many other ways too, does not feel right for me. I often wish that I was able to be this age at some point in the 20th century, either the 70s or the 90s. I totally agree with the last few comments. The music (in my mind) was best then, and at the moment music is the most important thing to me.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Crush Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so beautiful. I don't love this band, I have to say, but I was told to listen to Rhinoceros and as this is the one after I heard it too, and I like both, but this is the nicest. I'm not sure it's a drug song, but it does have a lovely hazy feeling to it. It just makes me think about bright swirling colours...which is interesting...

Totally agree with blackestwhiterose. It's a great song, but don't listen too late at night.

Suede – This Hollywood Life Lyrics 15 years ago
I saw an interview with Brett where he said that this song was actually about a male friend of his if I remember correctly, who lived in Hollywood and tried over and over to get famous, but never succeeded. He said it was a sad life. So maybe it's just written like it's about a girl so that his friend didn't realise it was about him (though it does seem pretty obvious) or just because Brett thought a woman theme would make the song sound more glamorous?

Suede – The Power Lyrics 15 years ago
This is such a Brett song. Not that I don't love him, because I do, and he's a genius, but he can be kind of arrogant. And this song is no exception. From what I can make out he is basically saying he can make the world feel what he wants them to feel if he is given the power to do so. It's a song about ambition. In my opinion. I may be way off.

Suede – By The Sea Lyrics 15 years ago
Just discovered this song. It makes me want to cry, it's so lovely. I agree it's sort of wistfully optimistic. It makes me depressed, though, because it's another wonderful Suede song that I'll probably never see live.

The Smiths – Barbarism Begins at Home Lyrics 15 years ago
Me too. I'm a fourteen year old girl, and have got my two best friends into the band, but all my other friends dismiss Morrissey's voice as "boring" or "annoying" and are fed up with me constantly quoting songs at them. My favourite doesn't change every day, although I do go through periods of addiction to certain songs. For me the best is always How Soon Is Now. They are (were) a phenomenal band and I'm gutted not to be able to see them live. My only chance is for them to reunite, but it seems very, very unlikely. I'll just have to wait and hope...

Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics 15 years ago
When I first heard this song I hated it, and I was ranting to my mother about what a stupid topic for a song, how boring just to be saying, "I'm thinking of getting a maid to clean up for me..." etc. Then she said she thought it might be deeper than that, it might mean that he is saying that he only needs a maid to look after his house, but he is looking past the fact that he actually needs someone to love him. I don't know if I agree, but I love this song now, and find it very moving.

The Only Ones – From Here to Eternity Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this song. Very depressing but beautiful. I love the burst of guitar after "dreams that won't come true". Can't say I "get" the meaning of this song, but I'm not sure there is a meaning to get, so much as a general feeling, and I certainly get that.

I'm an Only Ones fan! They're amazing. Why has nobody commented on Oh Lucinda??

I always thought it was "it's just that neon light"! Huh, I think I prefer my version to the real version now.

Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is definitely bittersweet. I've always thought of it as something that really was perfect, but then it's over and you're left wondering what there is to live for anymore. His voice is so perfect for this song. When the chorus comes in it sounds really desperate, almost like the narrator is trying to flatter the person/drug whatever that made their day so perfect into staying a little bit longer, like "I've had such a good time...does it have to end?" I personally do feel like this song is at least slightly to do with Heroin, though obviously as with most songs that could be about drugs it could also be interpreted as a complicated relationship, I guess because (not that I know) that's what a relationship with a drug is like.

Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 15 years ago
I LOVE Perfect Day, and There She Goes. Why are good songs always about heroin?? Golden Brown, Another Girl, Another Planet, Beetlebum and loads of others that I can't think of now.

Teenage Fanclub – The Concept Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so beautiful. I think it's about a sort of groupie-ish girl who followed them around, i.e. always there at gigs and offering to drive them home, but after a while the guy singing, whether it's actually from the point of view of the real singer or not, began to realise that he really liked, her, but he had already treated her really badly because he thought that as a "rock star" that that was what he was meant to do. By the time she's gone he realises how much he misses her. That's just what I thought. I'm probably wrong.

Suede – Breakdown Lyrics 15 years ago
Out of the three you mention I only know this one. I would be honoured to know this was written for me! I think Suede is their best album, and this is one of the best songs on it.

If that's true, it's incredible. This song is so beautiful.

That is the weirdest thing ever. Literally just before I was reading this I was listening to Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. And I had no idea it was J Mascis singing.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 15 years ago
For some reason I had always seen the "two lost souls" line as a couple who genuinely loved each other but were miserable with their life and were clinging together because they were the only good things they had. I have no idea why I thought this, it's just they way I always felt.

The Smiths – Handsome Devil Lyrics 15 years ago
Very interesting way of looking at it. I don't know if I agree but you might well be on to something. I have to say the "Licking lips and ready to pounce" image is really very disturbing but quite funny.

Television – Prove It Lyrics 15 years ago
I bet that Elvis Costello's Watching The Detectives was majorly influenced by this song. Both great songs. Apparently my mum used to dance to this when she was my age, which is pretty weird to think about.

Me too. He really does have an incredible voice, and this is such an under-appreciated song.

The Kooks – She Moves in Her Own Way Lyrics 15 years ago
I try not to do this too much because as everyone says this is a lyrics website where you are meant to give opinions on meaning not rant about how great a song is etc but OH MY GOD THIS SONG IS SO BEAUTIFUL, it's my top favourite song EVER and that means it comes above How Soon Is Now and The Drowners which means it is absolutely incredible. Favourite song, favourite band. And lovely people too. I hate the fact that they get so much stick just because they don't try to act incredibly tough and smash up studios and so on. Rant over. Sorry.

Suede – The Wild Ones Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is sad, but has such a summery, holiday-ish feeling to it in my opinion. It's probably just the line about the plane leaving on a sunny day, but I think it's also the general dreamy mood that makes me feel relaxed like I do when I am on a Summer holiday. Can't wait for July!

Suede – Heroine Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that as the band liked to give out a sort of slummy, low-rent glamour type of image, it's no coincidence that the song is called Heroine. I presume they wanted to have this kind of thing associated with them, and have an obvious link, whether or not the song is actually about the drug or not.

Iggy Pop – The Passenger Lyrics 15 years ago
Lou Reed is amazing. Iggy Pop is amazing. Everyone I like musically seems to be inspired by Lou Reed, it's true. But this song is true genius, just as much as Perfect Day (my favourite by Lou Reed) is.

Aaaw...I got really excited when I thought The Vines had covered a Rolling Stones song. It wouldn't be too unlikely, they do seem to love British music.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is the story of my life. I'm too young to really say that, but it feels like it and I'm an angsty teenager so I have a right to! My dad put this on a mix CD for me and I thought it was awful, too long and too dreary, along with most other Smiths songs, and then it suddenly clicked with me and there are barely any of their songs which I don't love now, but this one is still my favourite. The beginning guitar gives me shivers every time.

The Smiths – Reel Around the Fountain Lyrics 15 years ago
Do you think it could possibly be "Tame" by Pixies? I don't know, but it has similar-ish drums and then a very Pixiesesque bassline. I don't know much Sonic Youth and that's the only Pixies song I could think of that starts that way.

The Smiths – Reel Around the Fountain Lyrics 15 years ago
I always felt that "Take me to the haven of your bed was something that you never said" was meant to indicate that although the person in question is happy to have a relationship with M, it's perhaps not as deep a connection as the connection M has with this person. So although they're happy to see him in a more casual way, they don't care enough to view time spent with him as a special, almost sacred time, i.e. they would not think of his bed as a "haven". As usual I may be talking complete rubbish though.

The Smiths – Sweet and Tender Hooligan Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes that's definitely what I got from it too. It reminds me of Stop Me... because of the theme of someone apologising and promising not to do what they did again, but it's kind of clear that they will. Am I making any sense whatsoever??

The Vines – Country Yard Lyrics 15 years ago
Does anyone else feel that the "aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhiiiiiii" bit is quite similar tune-wise to the bit from The Drowners by Suede (One of my all time favourite songs) where it says, "So slow down,"? I had this pointed out by my mother, who hates Suede and loves The Vines but has to endure both being played loudly and a LOT by me. I wouldn't have been so sure of it if I didn't also know that Suede is one of Craig's favourite bands too.

Television – Guiding Light Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey RettAlexis, is that a reference to Radiohead's Creep?? Anyway, this song is really beautiful. It's the one that caught me from the first listen. It's sad, but sort of hopeful. I think so, anyway. Maybe about letting go of something bad that happened in the past and looking forward.

Television – Venus de Milo Lyrics 15 years ago
I went to Brighton today w. parents and a couple of mates. We were looking in an old record shop because I love vintage music and I was looking (in vain, sadly) for a New York Dolls CD. My Dad showed this to me and said, "Buy this. I think you'd like it. It's sort of Indie/Punk." I liked this description, took a risk and bought it. Listening to it for the first time now. Loved all so far, which is so unusual for me. It's incredible. Well, another band nobody else aged fourteen will have ever heard of. So annoying, the best bands were from the 70s/80s.

Big Star – Thirteen Lyrics 15 years ago
I wrote a song for my friend called Thirteen when she was thirteen and in love with this guy who was leaving our school a few days later. She's fourteen now, and still in love, but she has never seen the guy again. I hadn't heard this song yet - mine was named after the Teenage Fanclub album which I also love. And the Teenage Fanclub album's named after this, so when I heard about this song I had to listen to it. It's lovely.

Suede – The Drowners Lyrics 15 years ago
Whenever I hear this song I get shivers! It's so beautiful. (Yes I know people are hated for just going on about how great the song is, but I have to say it.) His voice is so, so lovely. Even though my entire family hate it. Meaning wise, I think what people have been saying so far is pretty right.
