All of Dan's songs are about sex in one form or another.

Arcade Fire – Empty Room Lyrics 13 years ago
This song makes me think about someone who is not able to relate to most people, lost in youth, or possibly unable to 'grow up'. (Not in a negative sort of way)

Specifically I think about being younger, and relating to someone who you can 'play' with in a way that disconnects to reality. Your pal that you play with moves on, gets the whole 'being grown up' thing, leaving you behind.

You can no longer be yourself around that person, because you haven't 'grown up' or lost that fire.

You know you will go the same route eventually, but in the mean time, you can still be yourself when alone.

The whole track relays this message. Reread it.

Arcade Fire – City with No Children Lyrics 13 years ago
To me, this song is incredibly cathartic and teeming with conviction.

I believe it is completely about being 20-something and lost as can be.

Officially a man, but still not quite there, just caught somewhere in the throws of well above the legal age, but still not recognized by contemporaries. Its tough, and you want to be recognized by your coworkers, but it just can't happen. Its tough to relate to people outside your age group, and all of which are above you, and have no understanding of what exactly you are.

Trying your damnedest, you try to live up to an old generation's standards, but simply can't, its like being a child in a city with no children in it; the people you relate to.

The childhood hope about the letter, or even the millionaire (C.E.O. type figure with the same sort of inspiration) who has the same disconnect, just screams the meaning to me.

The thing about this CD, is personally I see no political allegory. Past albums seemed to say that to me too, but as I get older, I actually tend to relate to the arcade fire more.

The New Pornographers – Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk Lyrics 13 years ago
When I first heard it I wondered about the 'Byzantine' also.

The way I put it together is saying 'Byzantine' is a reference to antiquity. (i.e.- The byzantine empire of approx. a thousand years ago, obviously this isn't addressed to someone from that age, just kind of a way to show something ridiculously out of date)

Note the 'simpler then' and blast from the past. Selling meaningless 'Sweet Talk' than substance. Sounds like its being addressed to someone who is old school.

I believe they are talking about simplicity of the older generation's approach to each other, love, and relationships.

Maybe just social commentary of the times.

Arcade Fire – Half Light II (No Celebration) Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this track. In fact, the whole new CD is pretty excellent. The premise of the Arcade Fire has always been coming of age, and this song just is about already coming, and returning to what you were so many years later. Its sad, a little sweet, and absolutely true.

The National – Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks Lyrics 14 years ago
When I hear this song, the thing that stands out to me, is 'I'll explain everything to the geese' As in 'the geese of beverly road'.

Of course geese of beverly road is about innocence, and setting off car alarms all down a street. Its looking back, somewhat disappointed at what you are today, and trying to make sense of what happened to get to this point. Theres no regrets, just a bit of a story to explain how and why things didn't turn out as planned.

The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio Lyrics 14 years ago
I think of this song as somewhat of the opposite of 'Theory of Crows' from their debut. This song focuses more on the dread of returning home. Being 'Carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees' reminds me of a person running away from a swarm of bees. Metaphorically this relates to running from creditors and a myriad of other issues why he has to be returning home. Upon returning home, its realizing that not only things have changed, but his original running away has not gone completely forgiven, and has accumulated 'interest' in a sense, to the point where he owes time on top of the time he missed, a debt that he might well never get even on.
