Beyoncé – Ave Maria Lyrics 14 years ago
She was lost in so many different ways
Out in the darkness with no guide
I know the cost of a losing hand
There but for the grace of God go I* (this is the actual lyric)

...this verse is all about the complications that come along with living (especially feeling lost and without a place in this world). The last line is very famous and can be interpreted in many different ways but I think here the meaning should be taken as something bad has happened to someone else have happened to you (very biblical and helps to bring all human beings together and on the same level).

I found heaven on earth
You were my last, my first
And then I hear this voice inside* [actual lyric]
Ave Maria

...this is a very simple verse that is talking about finding love and it being the most important and superior thing in this persons life. Ave Maria = Hail Mary. The Hail Mary is a prayer that is to be said by one person on the behalf of another person and then there is a belief that God will answer accordingly (Perhaps she is thanking God for answering the prayer to find love).

I've been alone
When I'm surrounded by friends
How could the silence be so loud
But I still go home knowing that I've got you
There's only us when the lights go down* [actual lyric]

...the speaker is related herself to the character that was sung about in the first verse but relates her new found love to the feelings of being alone which ultimately puts a positive spin on the sadness. The love affair keeps this person going and has shifted all negative emotions into positive ones.

You are my heaven on earth
You are my hunger, my thirst
I always hear this voice inside
Singing Ave Maria

...the speaker is giving direct thanks and praise to the person she loves. By the end of the verse she is giving direct thanks and praise to God

Sometimes love can come and pass you by
While your busy making plans
Suddenly hits you and then you realize
It's out of your hands, baby you got to understand

...this verse is all about destiny/fate. These people were meant to be together and fall in love. the speaker is directly acknowledging God as the ultimate supreme being. Some things are just meant to be.

You are my heaven on earth
You are my last, my first
And then I hear this voice inside
Ave Maria

I think that's too literal. Justin loves him some metaphors....I posted a reply on the 2nd page (I think).

I think skinny love is meant to be taken as disappearing love.
Look at the song a little differently...picture him looking in a mirror singing all of these lines to himself.

Blood Bank (the song) has the theme of living in the present...do you think this theme is also carried out in this song?

couldn't have said it better myself! kudos!

In terms of whether or not they knew each other...I think they actually met in the blood bank (it's the randomness of it all that makes this song so beautiful). They clearly exchanged names...so, that's how she recognized his blood and his brother's blood.

Living in the present...not worrying about the past and/or the future is what's important. If you don't live in the present you might miss out on something amazing...something like finding love at the most mundane place (yes, I am aware of the significance and the beauty of them meeting at a blood bank...but it's random and unexpected like the supermarket).

"Cause it's runnin' you with red" definitely means that she's blushing...oh, so beautiful!

Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire Lyrics 15 years ago
before I give my analysis of the lyrics here is just a little background information...

the original lyrics to the song were about two people who hated eachother but had fantastic sex together and couldn't stop - then the 2nd version was way "too explicit"....so, these lyrics are the medium - which could most certainly help one to understand the song more.

pretty neat interpretation...

In an interview, Justin has said that the song is in fact about past relationships ruining present/future relationships - so, you're interpretation of that line somewhat works

(I think it's the same lyrics over & over...no variations)

SEEMS LIKE HE'S MEDITATING...very mantra-like feel! (also reminds me of "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap)

I believe this song is a reflection of his last album and how he actually felt during that cathardic process...(I know, seems so unlike Justin - but it works for me!).

...although this EP seems to be somewhat distant from his first album it's almost as if he is mediating on past life experiences - specifically demonstrating that he learned a lot from spending time at his cabin in the woods of Wisconsin.

from these particular lyrics, I get the impression that ONE of the things he learned during his "excavation" was to simply STOP, TAKE A DEEP BREATH, THINK, AND LEARN ABOUT HIMSELF.

I must agree with selfishisgorgeous in terms of the overall meaning of the song being "I WEAR MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE."

I think he also touches on his feelings of isolation and displacement within the world around him, and the danger that comes along with falling in love.

Bon Iver – For Emma Lyrics 15 years ago
on a side note...in an interview with Justin he said this conversation was NOT between he and Emma -- but a different girl. Which is interesting...totally goes with the setting of "Skinny Love."

I think this song is furthering the lyrics of "Skinny Love" and showing how much his pain from past relationships contribute to ruining present ones. She is paying for the pain that Emma (and whoever else) brought to Justin.
...she is essentially saying SPARE ME - I can't take this anymore. He tried, but because of his pain that still haunts him from the past he's fucking new relationships up.

This song is about past love ruining present and future loves.

skinny love = disappearing love

HE is the cause of his present "love" not working out because he is so fucked up from his past love.
...this is him talking to himself

"Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here"
...this is him telling himself to stop fucking this new relationship up OR just forget about it and start a new day (by pouring the salt on their relationship he is saying he's willing to just forget it all & have it disappear from his life.

"I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall"
...this is him clearly at fault for ruining the relationship. this scene signifies a great disaster and willingness, by him, to no longer participate in the relationship.

"I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind"
...this is him talking to himself - he is stating HIS faults within the relationship

"In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines"
...THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND --- HE IS SAYING THAT THEY ARE STILL TOGETHER AND IN A RELATIONSHIP BUT HE IS SO FUCKED UP FROM PAST RELATIONSHIPS AND SHE (HIS CURRENT GIRLFRIEND) IS THE ONE "PAYING" FOR THEM.

"Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere...Sullen load is full; so slow on the split"
...he is wondering how he got in this fucked up situation - who would have thought that heartbreak from the last (perhaps it was a VERY long time ago even) would contribute to so much present heartbreak when it should be pure bliss. their relationship is dwindling...skinny. they are SLOWLY breaking up - they are so irratated and there is so much hurt along the way.

"Now all your love is wasted?
Then who the hell was I?
Now I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines"
...Justin likes to play with the characters in his narrative and here I think there is a switch between speakers - the girl is lashing back at him and showing him how much he has hurt her along the way.

"Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?"
...this could be her telling him that she was willing to give him her all and make things work - and he'll never find another like her ---- OR this could be him talking to himself and saying you're so fucked up, there's no hope for you, you've gone and ruined another good thing in your life...and so on. personally, I think it's the latter!

After exploring the album a lot more I take back saying "but I believe this first song sets the precedent for the rest of the album, which I believe is supposed to be played in the correct order in which he lists them on the album; ultimately each song is part of a narrative that starts with Flume and ends with Re: Stacks (which is his liberation)."

...It is in fact LUMP SUM that sets the mood for the entire album (you can read what I wrote about Lump Sum on that page if you'd like).

anyway, the songs are in no specific order like I believed them to be!

Was one of my least favorite songs on the album...mainly because I couldn't understand what he was saying/all the metaphors seemed to heavy to decipher. It took a lot of looking up words in the dictionary (ahh embarrassing!) for me to truly "understand" what he was trying to say.

After all of my head work and word/metaphor searching, this song is now one of my favorite songs on the album!

Initially, I believed the whole album to be a long narrative; the songs were purposefully in the order they were because he was telling a chronological story. I NO LONGER BELIEVE THAT...and understanding this song/learning from BraveNewWorld that this was the first song he wrote it now makes much more sense!

"Sold my cold knot
A heavy stone"
...I think he is referring to his getting rid of a complicated problem that was weighing him down for far too long.

"In my arbor 'till my ardor
Trumped every inner inertia"
...this is such an optimistic thing for him to say - really beautiful. Essentially he is showing his devotion to "recovering" from the mess he found himself to be in. He's looking at the cabin as his only option to overcome his heartache.

"Balance we won't know
We will see when it gets warm"
...Yes, this is very literal. The first line suggests that he's taking a chance because he can't live the way he is living and he's sick of the "coulda, shoulda, woulda" lifestyle he's living. The last line (the literal one) is him being hopeful the by the end of his journey (when winter/the cold is over) he will become liberated.

Ave Maria is Latin for Hail Mary. This song is more religious than anything...but it can most certainly be applied to actual love on earth.

Bon Iver – Creature Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe it is most certainly "so many torahs." The definition can be simply understood as "law or instruction." I believe Justin is talking about the different roads in life that we can take; the abundance of options in life can lead to confusion and ultimately mistakes are going to be made along the way. There isn't necessarily a right or wrong path in this situation, however, he is certainly writing about the "wrong" and all the negative aspects of it. He is specifically writing about relationships gone bad.

I believe this song has no political ties at all. I think people read/heard the word "foreign" and tried to run with it.

I must agree with selfishisgorgeous; you're definition of creature fear was right on!

Garment, in respect to this song, simply means "an outer covering." I think Justin is demonstrating a wall between he and everything else in this world. He feels alone and perhaps betrayed by people he once surrounded himself with (whether it be his former band mates or girlfriends from the past) "I am my mother's only one, it's enough."

I believe he is using the British definition for maroon, which is a "firework used as a danger or warning signal." By doing this, he is showing us how the word love (and all that's in between) can in fact be sour.

I get lost in the rest of the lyrics, but I believe this first song sets the precedent for the rest of the album, which I believe is supposed to be played in the correct order in which he lists them on the album; ultimately each song is part of a narrative that starts with Flume and ends with Re: Stacks (which is his liberation).
