The Mountain Goats – 1 John 4:16 Lyrics

In Christian mythology, "The Beast" usually refers to Satan. Back to what lilotelasserie said, I think it's about Christian's struggle to follow God under all of Satan's pressures. Satan is usually depicted as being surrounded by fire. God is thinking about the Christian, so he's sending rain to douse the fire.
That's what I got from the song. Of course, that's the story. You also have the lesson that, no matter what horrible situation you find yourself in, there's someone who cares about you, so there's no reason to be afraid of living your life. |

The Alpha Male is trying to create a compromise to keep the relationship working. He really loves his wife, and says that he'll do all he can for her if she'll do all she can for him.
Apparently it doesn't work, because the very next song on the album begins the spousal abuse. |

That one line 'I was cold, so I put on a sweater and turned up the heat', I'm not sure how I can put into words what I think that means, so it will probably sound rambly.
I think it means that he can't warm himself up by being close to her anymore, so he has to turn up the heat and put on a sweater. Just in a sentence, "I have to turn up the heat and put on a sweater as opposed to cuddle with you." That's kind of what I think it means. Thoughts? |

the low-hanging fruit is a reference to the Greek mythological character Tantalus, who was punished by the gods to exist eternally in a pool of water that he could not drink, reaching for a fruit that was forever out of his reach. |

I think by 'said all their names three times' he's trying to give his old friends a sense of reality. 'They were real, these are their names.' Like they once were but are no longer, he's trying to convince himself that they're still with him. |

I took it as a song about illegal immigration. That they're sending him back to where he comes from, but he somehow escapes the border patrol, and becomes arrogant saying all their threats are empty...
Then again, the entire album is about drug addiction, so it wouldn't make any sense to throw in a song about aliens. |

I like to think that this is the song Quenton and his friends were listening to in RHAPAW in John Green's book Paper Towns :) |

Well, John said that with this song he just threw words against a wall and hoped they stuck, but I think that people could develop infinate meanings from it :)
This is the first Mountain Goats song I ever heard, and I've been in love with Darnielle's work ever since :) |

The Mountain Goats – Going to Georgia Lyrics

Every band has one song that everybody loves. :)
This song means a lot to me personally. My best friend, Lindsey, if I'd never met her I'd be nothing. She moved away six years ago after knowing each other for three years. Three months ago I found her on Facebook. Before that I was extremely depressed, thinking about just ending it (it wasn't caused by missing her, just really depressed). She brought up my life again, and now I'm feeling great.
I found out that she lives in Georgia now, about forty miles from Atlanta :) |

I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I normally listen to every Mountain Goats song I have on one playlist (takes about an hour and a half), and whenever this one comes on I'm like 'Oh god, not this song :(' and then it gets playing and I start enjoying it more, and by the time it's over I'm sad.:( |

I think that the 'wild creature' line is both an expression of his freedom while he's with the girl, and a retaliation against his stepfather's violent oppression. Kind of like saying 'You've pinned me down, I've got back up, and now I've got you, and SHE'S got whatever's left of me to get.' |

What about this line 'before red cape and foil come closing in for the kill'? I absolutly cannot figure out what that means...
I mean, I know a foil is a sword used in fencing and that a red cape is what matadors use with bulls...but does that have anything to do with it? |

@Mockingsmile.
I've been confused about those particular lyrics too, though I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean he hung himself since it's an autobiographical song and obviously he's still alive.
I think it might be that this 'the last best thing he's got going' (let's call it 'Jackie') let him down somehow, and it wasn't really all that gentle. Maybe she dumped him? Who can really see the inner workings of the mind of John Darnielle? |

@Serilliant: If so, do you think maybe the last best thing he had going was his mother?
In the live performances, he sometimes says "And, Jackie, you're the last best thing thing I've got going." So unless Jackie was his mom's name, it's some person named Jackie. |

Obviously this song is about his stepfather and all that, but what about those LAST few lines? Where it says 'we' hold on? Isn't it strange that his stepfather would be included in that? Or is it talking about someone else? His family as a whole perhaps? |
