Depeche Mode – In Your Room Lyrics 15 years ago
To Martin Gore love, desire and religion are just three different incarnations of one underlying human need, a craving to overcome the profound loneliness of every human being.

In this way many of his songs can be interpreted on different layers: love, sex, religion - anything that makes you feel being part of something.

But consequently Martin goes one step further into total surrender and oblivious self-abandonment. It's the ultimate state of peace of mind that corresponds with the deathwish that's resonates in many of his songs.

In Your Room perfectly fits into this principal theme, but does so in the most sensual way of all Mode songs.

BTW: The live version on the SOFAD live album is the only good reason to buy this one at all. Listening to it at 3 o'clock in the morning gives me shivers down my spine and makes my skin crawl.

Depeche Mode – Halo Lyrics 15 years ago
A friend of mine claimed it's about the love between a priest and a nun because of the religious connotation of the title. Well, it really made me laugh. But then, the lyrics don't really disprove his perception.

Nevertheless I favour an angle of view a bit wider than this. Generally speaking, it claims that love itself outweighs all consequences that might come from giving in to it. Simple as that.

Depeche Mode – Dressed In Black Lyrics 15 years ago
The unique thing about the album "Black Celebration" is that rather simple, but beautiful songs like this one (along with Sometimes, It Doesn't Matter Two, Here Is The House, World Full Of Nothing) make a great counterpoint to those classic Mode anthems like Stripped, A Question Of Time, Black Celebration, Fly On The Windscreen.

They add up to a well-balanced mixture that IMHO no other DM album achieved - even though it's not my top favourite one.

Depeche Mode – Dream On Lyrics 15 years ago
Like in many others of Martin's songs this one, too, is about the ambiguity and difficulty of coping with the most fundamental human emotions and needs.

It's about the longing to feel alive even if you ruin your health by the means you use in the course of it. It's about the desperate need to receive love and affection and the deep fear of being turned away. So you're not daring to open yourself to someone, to give something in return. Desire comes like a sickness over you because of the moral implications, the implanted guilt in you.

Like in a self-fulfilling prophecy you expect to get hurt and so you act in a (self-)destructive way that allows no other outcome. But feeling pain seems to be better than feeling nothing at all. Thus instead of pursuing your own free will or dreams you yield to something you call fate (or karma in this case). You're like a martyr for your own philosophy - it's pointless.

After all this you're then left with one last question that may lead you out of your gloomy existence: Are you still able to feel that bit of love, to live that bit of dream that will keep you alive and give you at least the hope on happiness? Or do you settle in your darkness, find some modus vivendi.

Sounds depressive? Well, it's Depeche. But I think in many people's lives you will find aspects of those conflicts Martin's songs describe. Love is a many splintered thing.

Depeche Mode – Easy Tiger Lyrics 15 years ago
Being one of my favourite instrumentals by DM I thought it deserves at least one comment.

To me it's an example of DM's ability to create wide and detailled acoustic landscapes of melancholy, yearning, hope and even humor.

I especially recommend the Bertrand Burgalat + A S Dragon version featured on the Maxi of Dream On. It's a hilarious conversion to a kind of 70's porn soundtrack with a driving rythm and kinky wahwah guitars.

Since there are no lyrics, a word to the title: It seems to me that the phrase "Easy, Tiger" comes from a movie or TV-show, meaning "Calm down, man", or so. If you know more please feel free to post a comment.

But it strikes me that in the title there is no comma between Easy and Tiger. So I find there is a little shift in the meaning, maybe having a sexual connotation, too. Again, if you have more information it's welcome.
