sorry, but i dont think this song is sad in the slightest. he says "And now it's 55 years later
We've had the romance of the century" which should clearly imply that they have been together since that first kiss 55 years ago. His tears are tears of joy for having found someone who shares such a powerful childhood bond and with whom he can live happily forever with. If thats sad, than i dont understand the word sad. The only sadness in this song is that both characters seemed to have been left with emotional challenges that stem from their childhood. Overall, it seems to me to be a beatiful, uplifting, and optimistic song. |

Another huge thumbs up to sulkowski - Your analysis completely answered all questions I had regarding this song. I just want to reiterate to what seems like nearly everyone else, that I'm 99% sure that the end of this song is not ambiguous about whether or not they stay together. The end of this song is not sad in the slightest. The line "And now it's 55 years later//We've had the romance of the century" should clearly imply that they have been together, romantically, for those fifty years. |

i didnt read them all but from what i read... most of you obviously dont know much abotu the white stirpes, or you just dont understand. meg is refering to herself in this song, she and jack are ex's and they divorced because meg thought the marriage was too fraternal. also they call themselves siblings for public reasons, they arent, but they feel for each other that way, MEG LOVES JACK LIKE A BROTHER AND A FATHER BUT NOT AS A LOVER. i also am not too fond of the song and meg doesn't have the greatest voice but it is kindof catchy and not their worst song |
