First of all, Dark Tranquility is famous for their lyrics having quite strange lexical combinations which can make one find difficult to understand (especially if they are not native speakers, which I am), though it doesn't make their songs any less cool! :) So, as for me, I did not understand some lines at all, they just don't make any sense to me, but from what I DID understand is that maybe this song is about a person, who was summoned to war against their will to a certain death? I mean, if we look at the chorus of the song with the very name of it mentioned, it tells us that the person is confused/sad/angry with the fact that it was not him who decided his own fate ("Where did I sign? Did I miss the auction?" etc). He was simply robbed of any choice. Now about the lyrics: "If I wake up dead to the world with the helm at my command" suggests us that those who are sent "there", don't come back and considered dead, plus the phrase about the helm (helmet) strongly suggests that it's about war. "Oh, faced tomorrow in the eleventh hour beckoned closer" means that tomorrow at 11 he is to be departed to war, and this hour is approaching, though he doesn't want it obviously. "Went the half mile, wondered when the resolution would come" - I think he went only half a mile across the battlefield and expected that courage or confidence would come to him, so it suggests that it is a person who has nothing to do with war at all. Some young fella of 18 or something like that. "Life became too solid" - not quite sure, but maybe "solid" means "rough" or "hard", assuming the present environment he is surrounded by. "diluted by the essence of denial" - his senses become mixed and it is hard for him to face the reality. "caught in fire's eye" - he finds himself in the center of some warfare that has just begun. "my lip was venom, words formed in my mouth" - here, I think "venom" means "spite" or "malice". Maybe he wanted to say something or even curse, like "holy f**k"... "and hid beneath the tongue" - but he didn't. He didn't have time even to say something like that... "never to be, never to be seen" - because, well, at that moment, he died... |

Well... First of all, I'll say that I heard the Eminem cover before the original song (weird to some) and, I dare say I'm not an Eminem fan (quite on the contrary), but the 'chorus' tune caught me right then. And only now, when listening to a newly downloaded playlist 'Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time', I've heard this so familiar tune and I said to myself "shit! that was not eminem song at all! It's Aerosmith!!!" And again... the song got me so deep... As for me, it's always great when I discover for myself some new song like this (old/modern - whatever!)... I'm eager to listen to it for hours! As for its meaning, I can say that every song which is worth listening and which meaning is worth discussing so much had been written on the basis of a writer's personal experience... Be that his personal life, his attitude towards something or just his speculations. Once, a friend of mine said to me: "dude, to write and compose a song in such an emotionally deep manner you must go through such a situation yourself..." And this is exactly one of those songs... Of course the author went through a hard time in his life. Otherwise, the song wouldn't have been so great. Particularly, I think the song is about never abandoning what a person dreams about. Whatever happens dream on. And of course, according to the chorus it is clear - live for the day. Do everything in time. Never postpone for tomorrow what you can do today. Don't be lazy to do what you really want. Because tomorrow may not come. You can lose the right moment... And be sorry for that for all your life. itsaboutdrugs88, are you another meathead who does nothing but flood? how can it be about Dimebag's death if it had been written and performed many years before his death? Anyway, Pantera rocks! And this song is another prove to this. Pity about Dimebag.... The lyrics speak for themselves. I hardy believe it has metaphorical meaning. It's about a girlfriend's death. But whose exactly - I really don't know. I like the very last part of the song when Phil yells the word "Gates!" and then Dimebag repeats the same note but by means of his guitar (artificial harmonics). Some musicians call this part "harmonics sermon" and so do I :). |

I agree with you both guys (I mean DarkEternal and Ocelot923). But to sum up the two of your opinions I would say that this song IS about a breakup or rather a reciprocate love: So, the guy is in love with a girl, but she cares no account for him and in the end he surrenders and stops trying, but some time later she falls in love with him, but, "as everything goes numb" he tells "the war is over". This is just how I personally see it, because this is exactly what happenned in my life recently. In my country in such cases they say "The train has gone" Cool song. |

| I can repeat one or more of the above mentioned comments, but this song was firsrt performed on the concert in Budapest in 1986, and I love this more than the original one... I always think that the songs which are performed "alive" are greater than the ones made in the studio. So, for me, to listen to Budapest version of this song equals to have sex with two young 21-year girls in one bed.... may be I speak too nasty, but those who understand me - it would be clear for them what I am talking about. Of course this song is about love and how long it can be... Pity that it's not forever... One day the flame has to fade... The flower has to wither... the felings have to pass away :( | |
