Elliott Smith – Rose Parade Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about his view on the world. how he sees everyone being so involved in mainstream and shallow, always trying to have a good time. Never apreciating the small stuff. Like what phx411 said.

i think the last line is just him thinking that maybe he's the wrong guy. He seems to be the only one who thinks like this. So he looks dowen on himself sort of.

I Love the lyrics in this song!

"Elliott Smith sucks."
Are you kidding me? He happens to me one fo the most, if not THE most, talented song-writers of his generation. You made yourself a fool just now.

Elliott Smith – I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me of how I feel until after "frontier". After that the meaning drags away from me personally and I don't quite know what he's talking about. but that's so Elliott and a big reason why I love him. Say, can anyone show me a link to this song. I haven't actually heard it (blush). Just read the lyrics.

Elliott Smith – I Didn't Understand Lyrics 16 years ago
I think is about a girl who used him, or something like that. he probably thought she liked him as much as he liked her but it didn't turn out that way and she left him. Now he's blaming himself in a way. I dunno. I have a clear picture of what this song means in my head...well a clear enough picture. I have trouble getting things into words...

Wow, no one's commented on this song for a while. but no, Good Will Hunting came out bfre this song was written. or at least released.

I think it's about suicide. id on't feel like explaining myself or anything but yeah, I think it's about suicide and how it can kind of pass on to other people. How depression and sadness can become contageous. And there's really no antidote but death.

Elliott Smith – Junk Bond Trader Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with Lloyd but i think I wanna dd a bit to it. i think it's also about how people just don't appreciate the small stuff. Going thorugh everything so quickly. Like when you see those people digging their fork into their food even as they're chewing another piece. You just wanna tell them to slow down.

I don't think this song is about drugs.

I love this song. And yes stcintown, I think it could have done well in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. I've always thought it deserved to be in a movie of that style. I never actually thought of Pulp Fiction before though. Kinda cool.

Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics 16 years ago
Every line in this song is the beginning line of a song. This song was written during the cuban missile crisis. Bob Dylan didn't think he'd live long enough to write all of these songs so he combined them into one. Haha I have no opinion on this song as of yet but I thought that was a cool fact. Makes it harder in a way to come up with an opinion.

Elliott Smith – Waltz #2 Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure this song is about his mother and his abusive step-father. Mostly about how his step father really abused his mother and how he's glad he can't really remember it. It mkaes a lot of sense reading the lyrics.

The Decemberists – The Bagman's Gambit Lyrics 17 years ago
I got the impression that this was about rule under bolshvism. Like Stalin and such. This guy and girl are in love and the girl is captured and 'dissapears' (to heaven or siberia...either way...) and it might have been because fo the actions fo the guy or not. Not sure but I'm pretty sure it's got a whole USSR thing going on.

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 17 years ago
I totally see a sort of Romeo + Juliet styled theme here. Except sort of changed. Like im guessing its a working class girl and a rich boy who fall in love. The boy has been sexually active, the girl...not so much. So he says that it doesn't matter what happens, they'll stay together. I think the 'We both go down together' line is more like the 'you jump, I jump rose!' thing from titanic. Only if necessary type thing. NIce song though.

The Shins – When I Goose-Step Lyrics 17 years ago
When you're riding the rails with those wide open eyes,
Well, there's one old south paw you will always fight.

Sorry about posting three comments but I also think this line is a good reference. It could be how the soldiers and what not of various regimes ride rails to get to different parts of the country to help spread propaganda. The 'south paw' I think refers to the people who oppose them or at least don't agree with them. A south paw is a left handed erson--->A person who sin't the norm (right-handed).

I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that lol.

Just some thoughts :)

The Shins – When I Goose-Step Lyrics 17 years ago
And keep them all checking their watches
When you're out tonight
...Curfew

All your mother's old-fashioned ways
...Conservative--->right wing--->Fascism

Why we blind-footed toddlers ever started out.
...People following juts because its popular. Such was the case in the Nazi and Fascist regimes of the 1930s

And tonight you go to bed and dream
All the world to be what you want it,
...Double meaning. Both how you want the world to be a better place with more freedom and how a person in power wants the world to be 'perfect' and the way he sees it.

Those are just a few of my interpretations of the lines in this song.

Just some thoguhts.

The Shins – When I Goose-Step Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about totalatarian governments and fascism; how they brain wash you into thinking the way you want, punish the 'undesirables' and just rule over you. They are conservative and they limit your freedom, you don't know what's out there because you don't know it exists.. Thats what I think this is about and the whole 'goose-step' thing seems to be a good symbol to use as it was used by many traditional armies and many countries that tend to brain wash their citizens today.

The Decemberists – Billy Liar Lyrics 17 years ago
A second opinion is that Billy Liar hides himself from other people. Others regard him as just a shy, boring individual and he is unwanted but in reality he doesn't want to let others know who he is because he is a closet homosexual and perhaps ashamed of it and he may be a sadist. I got this from the third lines of the first and sixth verses. I dunno. Im having some trouble figuring this one out.

The Decemberists – Billy Liar Lyrics 17 years ago
So I think this song is about a boy 'Billy Liar' I guess, whos unhappy and confused with his life. He has a shitty job and he is just too depressed. I think the sixth (or last) verse before the final chorus explains the meaning the best

As he drifts to sleep with a moan and a weep
He is decked by a Japanese geisha with a garland of pearls
How she twists and twirls!

So that basically says how he is crying when he goes to sleep because of his pathetic life but when hes dreaming, he's in his fantasy life (having sex with a Japanese geisha) and he's happy.

I also think the chorus helps explain it

Let you legs loll on the lino
Until your sinews spoil
Will you stay here for a while, dear
Until the radio plays something familiar?
Plays something familiar

So its just explaining how he wants to sleep all day and night. So long, that he'll leave his clothes out to dry, and when he comes back to retrieve them, theyll be all ruined because they were outside for so long (if that all makes sense). Then the lines:

Will you stay here for a while, dear
Until the radio plays something familiar?
Plays something familiar

talks about how the lady who is in his dream is asking him to stay (in his dream' with her. She wants him to stay until the radio plays a familiar song which wakes him and he realizes he's in his shitty life. Perhaps he likes music well so music is the only thing that wakes him up.

Just some thoguhts.

Elliott Smith – Clementine Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a man and a woman who are sort of having trouble in their relationship and they haven't seen eachother in a while because of it. Like the relationship isn't officially over but it's hanging by a thread. So the man is scared that the girl actually thinks it's over and he just drinks up to keep the pain and anxiety of it all away.

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 17 years ago
I dunno. I'm not so good at interpreting stuff but I think this song is just about moving on from past experiences and being sad about it. Like wanting to go in a different direction but not really having a choice. As well as just missing your old times, good, bad and ugly.

I just thoguht that about the whole 'red, right ankle' thing and how it sort of pleas with the leg to take it back when it is damaged. Maybe even torn off.

And then about the Uncle who 'you never knew cause he was dead'. Im less sure about this one but I think ts just probably about how you wanted to be a traveller or free perhaps. Like it could be speaking of the direction in which you want your life to go or just maybe your in a new city that u don't like but u have no choice but to be there.

The last verse or whatever you call it I think is just about the people that you remeber from a long time ago who you miss. All of them: your friends, enemies, aquaintances, people you don't know, poeple you fell in love with and people you loathed. You miss them all.

I dunno, Im in a city I don't want to live in right now and I just think this song decribes it well in a way. Especially the last verse.

Big Star – Holocaust Lyrics 17 years ago
Perhaps this song is actually about the Holocaust. I mean I know that seems to forward and is unlikely but there is a lot of lines that seem to resemble events that happened during the holocaust.

Such as "Your eyes are almost dead, can't get out of bed
And you can't sleep " maybe talking about how the people in the camps probably werent able to sleep because of all the people in thier beds and various other reasons

and

"Everybody goes, leaving those
Who fall behind " perhaps referring to how all of the jews in the camps who were not fit to work or had become to weak were gassed - They 'fell behind'

I dunno. jUst some thoughts.
