Well yes its about the media and eduation being corrupted in our age. I agree that it is very similar to pink floyd, it may have been based on it... you know not quite a cover but a bit of inspiration. I saw this performed live last year and loved it, i was in the middle at the very front of the mosh pit and the band was so connected to their song and the audience! it was kick ass! Yes john -fucking- howard is a fuckwit from fuckville and a george bush cocksucking wannabe! but that doesnt exactly fill the meaning of this song, it relates to it though, the brainwashing part, false promises, ignorance, manipulation through peoples fear, turning the other cheek. its the story of our society, our current situation, our government, our world. |

haha! you know i read the lines "its a quiet lie that makes you want to scream and shout, a pure synthetic sympathy that infurates you totally" written like that, in the wrong order and sligtly different to the actual song, written in permanent marker on the end of the bench at a bus stop near my house. i had heard of Elliot Smith but hadn't really heard any of his work and deffinately not this song. but i really like that bit of graffiti and it stuck with me. then i googled it and the first hit was this site (which ive been a member of for ages) and i was really suprised that it had kinda come round in a circle and joined up like that... so yeah... i think that all of the abpve entries have a point... and yeah people do only care because they think they should. |

Well i think youre all narrow minded dickheads! It doesnt have to be one or the other.! Think about it. hes a skateboarder who spends all his time on the streets skateboarding... you think he could do that without coming into contact with drugs? GOD you guys!!!! there is truth in both sides of it. He may not be dealing drugs but the song relates to it. and he may not be an inocent skateboarder he probubly does do some shit. but that doesnt mean that the whole song is a metaphore for DRUGS DRUGS DRUGS!!!! i think that the song is about how people judge youth. how they are especially suspicious of teenage boys skateboarding in public areas. thats not fair. but there is some truth in it, that drug dealers and adicts hang around those areas as well... but yer i also agree that not everything has to be related to drugs |

Yes its about a psychopath forgetting to take their medication but its more than that. Theres a girl hus in a relationship with the guy whos on medication. and he is going through a rough time... mabey they had a bit of a fight and that got to him even though it wasnt really big... but hes on the edge and it ends up that hes on the edge both mentally and physically (he kills himself) so hes on the edge of a clif about to jump and hes trying hard not to forget who he is but hes batteling himself and he jumps and as hes falling hes all alone and hes still trying not to forget. Then when he is found dead his girlfriend is so upset ("babey, did you forget to take your meds?") and she thinks about their relationship and she thinks about the sex and drugs (as in his medication not ilegal drugs) and the complications (obviously it would have been a very difficult situation and there would have been lots of comlications. |

yer i really love this song. i think it talks about how his childhood wasn't sheltered and wasn't perfectly rule abiding and he wasn't in the "perfect" kind of family that all ate dinner sitting in the same place at the table every night and sang christmas charols together every christmas eve or went to town together on saturdays. his family wasn't "normal" or "typical" but they were well off and they loved eachother. and he had a free childhood with the neighbourhood children and his sister. it talks about "lighting fires in the gutters" and "couple of men in a white van" and the girl down the street had alchoholic parents. it doesnt sount safe and sheltered and loving but it was free and it was his childhood and they are hid memories and he loves them cos they're part of what makes him him. i love this song. |

i think that all the above suggestons and opinions are great . its awsome to read all these other ppls views on a song that i love so much. i think its about drugs a couple are addicted and the girl is dying from it and hes telling her to have another smoke (lite up) as if theres nothing wrong because he knows that she really cant do anything but have another smoke and she doesnt have a choice about it even though they both knoe its gonna kill her. and that knowledge is killing him but he has to be strong for her. soadnot i dissagree with you that its her holding him cos it says that SHE cant raise her voice and have heart my dear etc. yer its an awsome song very sad. |

Great song. no wait thats an understatement. well until i read all these other interpretations of it i just thougt that like the rest of the worlds bands the killers had written a song completely about sex. but what else is new? almost all good music is sex related. but i'm listening to it right now and the drugs thing really does work june star 99 made it all kind of fit together. but jshine"s theory works as well... but whatever it means this is a fantastic song and the whole point of this site is to share your views because everybody sees things differently and thats the beauty of music. that you can love it in your own way for your own reasons, whether you listen to itwhen you smoke weed cos its beautiful, or you dance to it because its got a good beat and great guitar, or you watch it live because the singer is hot it makes people happy or sad and it has a different effect on every one. |

this is and awsome somg. it is one of those rare somgs that you can listen to over and over again and every time a line will stick out and trip you up and make you stop and think. its sometimes the same line that strikes you over and over, or a different line that you haddn't even noticed before. some people say that the " I believe" being used in every line makes the song sound repetitive, but i thing that it highlights the fact that this is someones interpretation of life, that they are simply finding meaning in the world and expressing it in their own way. i dissagree with Love_Burns_Me that they should have written a song about each belief because in this way it leaves us (the listners) room to think and interpret and find our own beliefs. yer its and awsome song. |

well im not in love with Emo actually i dont usually like it at all and im not usually that big on MCR either but i love this song. i think that it does have meaning other than "lets all go and slit our wrists, YAY i hate myself and screw the world" like most emo music ive been forced to listen to. i think that the first bit can be interpreted in many ways, you could think that it is about how strong the free mind of youth is. or you could say that it is about defeating your personal demons and acheving personal goals. or you could say that the "all the non-believers" means that it doesnt matter if other people think your weak or whatever , if you believe in yourself...etc. you've all heard that one. um i could say more but whatever. |
