I believe the line actually says

"I hid in the clouded warmth of the crowd but when they said, "Calm down," I threw up"

Kanye West – Monster Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not really into Nicki Minaj at all, but as everyone has pointed out, she fucking kiiiiiills it in this song, and it's impressive.

@havissard: Yeah, she might not have written it, but she performs her part in the song really fucking well.

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 13 years ago
Has anyone considered the fact that this song might not be about romantic love at all? I know there's a music video (which I have watched), but a lot of times, music videos are created for commercial value as opposed to actually corresponding with the song.

Nowhere in the song is the word "love" mentioned, though the word "heart" is. Yes, maybe it's metonymy, but I'm not entirely convinced that the entire song is about romantic love (though the first part might be).

The second half seems to be more about entering the adult world, finding a job but then finding yourself in a shitty situation (head over heels). The idea of one's heart breaking could be associated with the idea that people's hearts die when they get older (The Breakfast Club, 80's, y'know).

Owen Pallett – Adventure.exe Lyrics 13 years ago
While a lot of what you say may be right (and regardless of whether it is or not, it's very enlightening!), I would like to shed some light on the part regarding the last stanza.

I believe that I have heard Owen Pallett's boyfriend, Patrick Borjal, is actually Filipino, which could explain it. As for what you said about a Filipino having no business dating a Mishimia-worshipping homo...

Well, the Filipino culture loves its gay people... a lot. So, I feel that last statement you made could be put up to some debate.

Lady GaGa – Speechless Lyrics 14 years ago
The very first time I heard this song, I started crying and sobbing.

I could tell from the first few lines that it was a good song, so I had immediately looked up the lyrics (were up remarkably fast considering that the album wasn't even out, yet, so kudos to the songmeanings community!). I found out while in the middle of the song that it was about her father and reread the entire song before it was done. My father also has a severe medical condition that has been plaguing him for a few years, so I instantly empathized and... yeah.

That's my story. Favorite Lady Gaga song. She's amazing.

Minus the Bear – Into The Mirror Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm personally trying to figure out it's relation to the song "Animal Backwards." I think the two songs are meant to go together, the second one being a continuation to "Into the Mirror," which is why they flow into one another so seamlessly (other than for the sake of album cohesiveness).

First of all, this song is awesome.

Second, and this is about to sound really dumb, but it reminds me of Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen.

Arrah and the Ferns – Southern Comfort Lyrics 14 years ago
I know that Arrah and the Ferns is a Christian band, so I'm thinking this song may be about someone singing to a friend or parent who refuses to accept Jesus? Like, they tell them that there's a better place in heaven than the earthly houses their friends and parents build.

BUT it could also be about suicide. The first half of the song until "For you to find in New Orleans" is the person who is giving up and looking to kill him/herself. The second half until the end is the friend or close one being left behind.

Or this is how I see it.

It was written when he was nine.

Against Me! – Unsubstantiated Rumors Are Good Enough for Me (To Base My Life Upon) Lyrics 15 years ago
For me, this song was always about the "scene" that surrounds punk music. All these kids join this scene because they don't think anyone else can understand them, can understand this feeling of 'non-conformity' or whatever bullshit. But in the end, it all gets fucked up because the scene is just as pretentious and conforming as the people they think they're fighting against. And you're so pumped to fight against something, to stand against authority or whatever, and this stuff builds up and when someone pushes you, you just as easily push right back though you're supposed to be on the same side.

"You have no where to go, so you found someplace
You have nothing to say so you start lying"

You thought you found someplace, and you realize that you don't really belong here because maybe you're not radical enough or whatever. So you start lying about your views to be like them and in the end, the hate, the love and revenge are all blurred and you don't know what you stand for anymore because it doesn't even matter. The scene is just as bad as everything else.

Just my interpretation.

The Black Keys – Things Ain't Like They Used to Be Lyrics 15 years ago
That's the first thing I thought when I listened to this song. In fact, before I looked at the song title and heard the lyrics, I thought they were about to cover "Don't let me down".

Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics 16 years ago
No offense, but I feel like Shanef's explanation of the song, some of it just seemed like it was a bit too much. While there is a big possibility of it being about drugs, I feel the reference to white tuxedos and beating the heat is just too much of a stretch to be attributed to cocaine in the nose and the police.

Now, while I can't really offer any better insight than he can, I sort of the get the image of Gatsby from The Great Gatsby when listening to this song for some reason, though I used to get an image of a soldier waiting to go back home, too, though the latter makes less sense (unless you listen to the "Honey, when they gonna send me home" part, I guess). It really gives me an impression of the writing of the authors of the Lost Generation.

Kate Nash – Foundations Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pretty sure the line "My fingertips are holding onto the cracks in our foundations" means that she is having trouble letting go of problems they fight about. Cracks usually aren't assumed to be very large, so I think that it's like she's holding on to little things, like when he comes home wasted or says something embarrassing in front of their friends, and the foundation, obviously, is their relationship, which is breaking apart.

And instead of letting go of these problems, she keeps holding on to them because that's the kind of person she is, nit-picky and such, and in the end, she finally realizes that this is wrong and that she's only sticking around in the realtionship to make the guy miserable, because she enjoys fighting. Hence, the whole, "Everytime that you're upset and I smile" thing.

Regina Spektor – Oedipus Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that this song does not actually have anything to do with the Greek myth of Oedipus, but rather uses it as an ongoing metaphor to support the character that Regina creates.

I see it that, if thirty second is to be interpreted as the number 32, then this child is searching to be appreciated and noticed by his mother. Then, if thirty seconds is to be interpreted as a time span of thirty seconds - as in half a minute - then perhaps the mother of the child had had a lover (the child's father) who had left her. Her lover left and had several other children. The mother was heartbroken and would retire to her room in depression, paying little heed to her child. The mother regretted seeing that child because it reminded her of her old romance, and she was saddened by that. She was disgusted with herself for having been foolish and being stuck with a kid. Yet, all the child wants is to be noticed by his mother, to excel and make her love him.

That's how I see it.

I think I'm her. I'm the girl. I'm the one who needs to get a grip, who needs to call it quits, the one who's hurt and angry and frustrated.

And still in love.

Christina Aguilera – Reflection Lyrics 17 years ago
Um, actually, the lady singing Mulan is probably up to par with Christina. The lady who did the version of the song for Mulan (which, by the way, has different lyrics, but that's obvious) is named Lea Salonga, and she performed AS Miss Saigon and Eponine (spelling?) in Les Miserables on BROADWAY. So, yeah, stfu.

Josie And The Pussycats – Pretend To Be Nice Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, Tang Me, that's a tad hypocritical, seeing as how in your correction, you used the word "your" when the word "you're" should have obviously been used.

I think it is "confidence", not "comfort", though, right?

Anyways, yeeeeah, I totally know how she feels at this moment. I'm not going to try to explain the song; it's been done. I'm going through something similar, it feels, with those innocent eyes.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society – Tattoos Fade Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that I agree with inferno midsummer's analysis, but has anyone thought that there may be a bit of correlation between this song, "Tattoos Fade", and the song "New Heart" by Terricloth's old band, "Sticks and Stones"? New Heart talks about the Queen of Hearts having several tattoos and the song was written about the newfound passion that the bandmembers had about Sticks and Stones, about making the band work. However, in time, they ended up breaking up, and perhaps Tattos Fade was about how that ended, and it doesn't last forever.

Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's that, annameech. Have you ever tried to stop someone from trying to kill themselves? I think what he's saying is that, someone can try and influence a person's decision about suicide, but you can't MAKE UP THEIR MIND for them.

Also, I don't think this is just A story about a man who loves a girl and is trying to stop her from killing herself. I think that it's all one huge metaphor about the people who care about those who want to commit suicide, and about as well as a message to the people who would want to kill themselves. He's not PHYSICALLY going to buy her a ticket; that would be foolish. It's about wanting to somehow take the pain from that person and helping them escape for a while so that they can be happy. Annie is just a stand-in for all those hopeless people (as in, they are void of hope, not that we should stop hoping for them).

Anyways, this song has kept me from killing myself several times, and I can relate to it. I know what it's like to be so fed up with life, to just want to throw yourself off a building, to take the gun to your head. I know what it's like to be in the position where someone you love wants to kill himself and you have to do everything you can, even pin them down so they can't hurt themselves.

and i'll lead you home
if you let me
she said "forget me"
but i can't

These lines, also, don't necessarily mean that "Annie" died, but that when people love a wretch, no matter how many times that person will tell you to go away and leave them alone to die, you just can't forget about them and you can't let them die. You need to fight with everything you can to help keep them alive and don't forget them. That's what this line means to me.
