Personally this song identifies with my life in the sense of rejection leading into worse thoughts. Once rejected... fear overcomes you and that makes it even harder to try again, and again. The more you fail, the more you blame yourself, hence the great below. It's yourself making yourself go lower, and lower, yet you can still feel the pain lower and lower. Once you hit the Great Below, or sever depression, its so hard to climb back up. This brings sadness because of the loss of confidence. It's about a kind of death, but not actual death. I believe it's a part of you dying and it keeps getting pulled away until it hits rock bottom. And the roots of how your mentality got there are still apparent, hence why you can still feel the original source of the disease. I thank Trent Reznor for expressing his emotions, ideas, thoughts and accidents through his art. I can connect and identify on so many levels that I don't know if I'd be any better than I am now after hearing his talent. |

Ok, search depper. Interperet how you want, but at least have a good explanation as to why you believe what you want. Mr. Fuck Bush, seriously. In my opinion, this could be about a relationship. Possibly one of those ones where one pours their heart and soul into it, and the other pushes away, leaving the other empty inside. I don't need to go further, but that's what I think... just listen to this or read the lyrics and think about one of those relationships where you begin to hate the other because they wont take advice and they keep everything inside and wont let you in on aiding them. That's where I start to hate them, and threaten them that it can't go on any longer, hence, teaching them fear (You taught me hate, I'll teach you fear). That's just what I think... and the eternal winter thing is well, we all know winter can really suck and put one in a bad mood, and when a relationship just stays like that where one isn't interacting with the other as far as talking or being assertive, that can really put you down as well and then in the end begin to piss the fuck out of you. |

I looked at this song differently than it's video and sex. I believe this is a song about someone with some problems, very confused, and constantly trying to figure out what the fuck is going on in their head. Depression sucks, and sometimes it's so heavy you have to really work to get back to your normal self again. I believe Trent is actually speaking to himself, trying to get out of a depression, or problematic state by digging deep inside of his head trying to unlock whatever the fuck is wrong and get back on his feet again. |

I think it's about pain. Rejection... Feeling shitty because of it. It happens again, and again, as hard as you try to be a good friend. "Hey, Your weak will won't help her heal her heart" Eventually it becomes a big hole inside and it's your weakness which wont help another in a relationship - I think. That's how I think Layne felt, and that's certainly how I feel. I don't think it has to do with rape... it's just the cycle of rejection again and again and again. |

Ok well... you guys forgot to comment on the instrumental part of the song. To begin with.. after Randy's first tid bit. That's when all of the people are frantically running in confusion and then when the non-stop bass drum comes in that's when machine guns are going off and the guitars are portraying the work of the planes.... right after the dive bomb of the guitars is when the planes fly in and carpet bomb the shit out of the place..... then more machine gun fire and shit going off while the planes are carpet bombing elsewhere. Then when it slows down is when the cease fire.... and the other place that was bombed is just all smokey and there's burning debree and bodies.... then it's just confusion and silence, but right when the guitar solo comes the first time is when there's people shaking, shocked at what just happened... people bruning... people dying... people suffering... people missing limbs... The second time the guitar solo comes is when they start realizing what just happened... and have to start moving on with their orders and continue their parade. This song is terrifying... it's a work of art... you have to really picture the madness... What I wrote above is What I was thinking while listening to the song. My own interperetation. |
