Kathleen Edwards – Oh Canada Lyrics 16 years ago
It references the Jane Creba killing to criticize larger problems in Canadian society. We often forget that even Canada has problems of racism, pollution, and cultural sexism. It's a provocative song.

Crystal Castles – Tell Me What to Swallow Lyrics 16 years ago
I totally agree. It does seem to have a pedophilia/incest theme. It's very pretty but very dark, and stands out so starkly from the rest of the album, like the whole thing was a put-on until the final track. Incredible.

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Everything I Cannot See Lyrics 16 years ago
The chorus has such an incredible melody. Best song on the album maybe?

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Nothing and Nowhere Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the imagery she uses with places symbolizes times of our lives. She uses a lot of imagery with apartments and houses, it's interesting. The song really examines the past, lost innocence and the impermanence of memory, and how nothing is how we want it to be.
She's a true poet.

Beirut – Nantes Lyrics 16 years ago
Does anyone know the source of the French vocal sample that occurs in the middle of the song?

Charlotte Gainsbourg – AF607105 Lyrics 16 years ago
It's the most glamorous plane crash ever, clearly. It's interesting that her character feels complete once she's about to die amongst strangers, it certainly implies a lot.

submissions
Charlotte Gainsbourg – The Operation Lyrics 16 years ago
Certainly among the sexiest songs ever, I like her metaphor of love as an operation, it's at once disgusting and charming.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite from Kala for sure, it's a shame radio would never touch it becuase of the gunshots, even when she performed on Letterman they edited that part. Still, the song is my jam.

Malajube – Étienne d'Août Lyrics 16 years ago
The title, Etienne d'Aout means Stephen of August, I have no idea what that may signify. The video for the song is really poignant too, of a viking burial.

Justice – Tthhee Ppaarrttyy Lyrics 17 years ago
This is such THE party song! It's really cool how they used the Three Six Mafia 'Stay Fly' sample right after Uffie says fly.
I love Justice, they are the new Daft Punk!

submissions
Phoenix – Rally Lyrics 17 years ago
This is such a sexy song, and catchy too! Kind of like a French Shins, but more fun.

Patrick Wolf – The Magic Position Lyrics 17 years ago
I really love this song, it's all about fixing you life, setting it right in the magic position, and getting happy so you can live in the major key

Battles – Atlas Lyrics 17 years ago
There's more lyrics to this isn't there? What's here is kind of witty in an ironic way, but I swear there is more there. The vocals remind me of Animal Collective, but the whole thing is so dark and propulsive. Strange and Amazing song.

LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics 17 years ago
This is defeintely my favourite song on the album, and probably my favourite LCD song ever.
But who is "someone great"?
I kind of beleive the mistress interpretation, "you're smaller than my wife imagined / surprise you were human"
But the death aspect makes a lot of sense too, the part with the phone call:
"I wake up and the phone is ringing,
Surprised, as it's early.
And that should be the perfect warning,
That something's, a problem.
To tell the truth I saw it coming,
The way, you were breathing.
But nothing can prepare you for it,
The voice, on the other, end."

That could be someone calling James Murphy, telling him his friend died, he should've expected it becuase his friend was sick (the way he was breathing). Then the weather part is about how perverse it is to have nice weather at a funeral.

Also, in the CD liner notes he dedicates the CD to Dr. George Kamen, 1942 - 2006.
So yeah, I change my mind. He is talking about this guy who died. Sweet song.

Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks Lyrics 17 years ago
The video is almost too cute. The animated characters, good god! If I were more cynical I would hate it, but I'm not so I LOVE the video. And yeah, patagon, buy the album. I did and nearly every song is great.

Peter Bjorn and John – Paris 2004 Lyrics 17 years ago
It's such the love song, completely sentimental and overwhelming. It's about the sweetness of love, and how you give up a part of yourself for others. It is the counterpoint to the rest of the album's break-up songs.

submissions
Peter Bjorn and John – Objects of My Affection Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is certainly about growing up and maturing, and using any life experience as an opporunity for growth, even seemingly bad ones. My favorite lyrics are:
"and the question is, was i more alive
then than i am now?
i happily have to disagree;
i laugh more often now, i cry more often now,
i am more me."
It is the perfect life philosophy about ending relationships of any kind. I also like that flesh is flesh part, we really are all the same.

submissions
Peter Bjorn and John – Let's Call It Off Lyrics 17 years ago
It's a song about breaking up (as is most of the album) but the Girl Talk remix is killer! Seriously, if you are a PB+J fan go out and get that Girl Talk remix.

Peaches – Fuck the Pain Away Lyrics 17 years ago
Has anyone ever seen the video for this. Peaches goes to Mayberry and causes some havoc with ol' Andy and Barney. That's what old sitcoms missed, sleazy and gratuitious sex. Hell, even Peaches crashed Ray and Deborah's place it would break their moronic teidium.
I used to think it was "Check out my pussy and behind" but the "Chrrisy behind" lyric is a witty reference.

Tapes N Tapes – Insistor Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the chorus, "Like Harvard Square holds all inane", it reminds me of being there in Harvard square. It is an apt description, and I like that the narrator is willling to be her badger, like support and fight for her. Such a wierd kind of love song.

submissions
Nico – These Days Lyrics 17 years ago
Nico's voice is just phenomenal, she fills the song with such a sense of prespective and wisdom. My favorite lines are the last two, definitely they are relatable.

submissions
Fischerspooner – Cloud Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the poem is an allusion to the Wordsworth poem, with the line "I wandered lonely as a cloud", the sue the same metaphor of a cloud ot express the same idea of loneliness and apartness. I really like the bass and guitar touchs in the song too, one of Odyssey's better tracks.

submissions
Miss Kittin and the Hacker – Frank Sinatra Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the sound of her laughter after she says "He's dead", but if I were one of Frank's illegitimate children, I would feel a little offended, I mean the man is dead! He doesn't even have the chance to laugh about Miss Kittin's eventual death. Unfair!

Ratatat – Seventeen Years Lyrics 17 years ago
This song says more without words than the entire album by The Rapture (I like them, but their lyrics suck). Ratatat is great because there is no filler, or unecessary words. I do think Cherry is a defintite highlight in the album, it's really emotional and romantic, without any lyrics.
Plus, Ratatat is possibly the coolest band name ever, it's liike the sound of a drum or gunshots. It definitely sums up the sound of the band.

Air – Le Soleil Est Pres de Moi Lyrics 17 years ago
The sun is ready for me (If I remember my high school french).
The video for the song is quite good too, all black and white. I love how moody and atmospheric tyhe song is, its timeless, borrowing from every decade, and sounding completely unique. ONe of my Air favourites.

Hot Chip – And I Was A Boy From School Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about alienation and not fitting in. Any teen feels that, especially at school. "We try, but we don't belong", and in the end our innocence is lost. It speaks to disaffection and rebellion in our lives. It's defeintely their most cerebral song. Great beat though.

submissions
Hot Chip – Over And Over Lyrics 17 years ago
I respectfully disagree with the above comment. Hot Chip is the shit! I love the repitetion of the song, and it's totally self-aware. Plus the monkey imagery is great. The spelling bee breakdown at the end of the song makes me wish I could get into spelling bees, their the hottest thing on earth.

Hot Chip – (Just Like We) Breakdown Lyrics 17 years ago
The DFA remix of "Breakdown" is amazing, the best DFA remix I've ever heard. I also think it's 'a pox on your heart'. I like the oblique, cyclical lyrics, "he end is the start". A great party beat.

Björk – Oceanía Lyrics 17 years ago
This song really works as a plea for peace, which fits with its usage at the Olympics, because Bjork just states that we are all the same to the ocean. It really is a beautiful message that every kind of life, whether it is a snake or a person, is equal. The final lines, "I am why" is a great reminder that we all descended from the ocean. Also the remix with Kelis is fantastic, her verse is really good. The Kelis remix works as a kind of love song between the continents and their mother, the ocean. Their voices are perfect together. It's Kelis' best work since 'Milkshake' at least.

Mates of State – Like U Crazy Lyrics 17 years ago
This song inspires me to believe in the majesty of love, in an almost unironic way. PLus, the song has a really great retro pop feel. I love Kori's super-high pitch chorus, it's understated and beautiful, like the rest of the song.

Fischerspooner – Just Let Go Lyrics 17 years ago
Umm... Or all fischerspooner lyrics are about partying. Either interpretation, this is a really great song, reminescent of 'Emerge'

Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song so much, it's like the perfect pop song. The rythm and beat are amazing. I love the dual vocals too, having both lovers represented is really ingenious. The whistling is really unique as well. I like how the song is filled with intensity and is almost uncomfortable, like beggining a new love affair is. I would definitely agree that Scandanavian music is huge now, PB and J join Shout Out Louds, Annie, Royksopp, and Jose Gonzalez as huge Nordic acts. This song is amazing, and PB and J show a really great understanding of making the perfect pop song.

Ladytron – Seventeen Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about how our society is so disposable. Society exploits teenagers as a commodity, manipulates us into being a resource, purchasing whatever Corporations are selling. This song serves as an indictment of our exploitive society, which views teens merely as sex objects and pocketbooks. I myself am 17, and I'm glad there is such a great song dedicated to my age. 17 is the best year of you life becasue it's the end of childhood, the last year of innocence and vulnerability. Ladytron totally realizes this and crafts an amazing teen anthem. I love the robotic vocals on the track, everytime I hear thissong I just imagine a futuristic, robotic, society, where they harvest youth and discard them in human dumps. Then again, that;s really creepy, so I just like to dance and sing along to this track too.

Tokyo Police Club – Be Good Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the lyrics "ways of the samurai /perry thrust do or die". TPC's energy is infectious, like a disease. They really capture adolescent energy, I'm 17 and If I had a band, it'd probably sound like this (I can only wish).

submissions
Tokyo Police Club – Nature of the Experiment Lyrics 17 years ago
I love Tokyo Police Club because they are from the 905 too! The Suburban Wasteland of Toronto rocks! These guys are a total inspiration, one day they were working in a Value Village (Canadian Used Clothing, really ghetto) and the next they are international rock stars! They make me want to drop out of school and start a band, if only I could play an instrument. It's so cool how the song equates falling in love with an experiment, science as a metaphor for life. If you ahve grown up in the bland min0numbing barrens of suburban Toronto, then this song is your life. TPC will be huge in the future, can't wait for it!

The Knife – Silent Shout Lyrics 17 years ago
Silent Shout is such a dark song, from such a cold, dark, but really beautiful album. I think the song could be about confronting one's own inner fears, she "now knows fragility", before she was unable to speak, only "mumble randomly". But she has a dream and sees her fears, and is ahunted by them for the rest of her life. She cannot escape what she fears most. Although, I also would understand some gender-bending theory ebcause the song does use the octave filter, so it sounds like Karin Dreijer is a man. The song certainly deals with the inability to communicate, she cannot speak, and even the title "Silent Shout" reflects that theme. Congratulatiosn to The Knife on having Silent Shout named the best album of the year by pitchfork. The song is the soundtrak to my nightmares, lol.

Cat Power – He War Lyrics 17 years ago
Perhaps I'm reading a little literally, but the chorus, "He war, He war, / He will kill for you" sounds like an indictment of violence and war, which to be honest, is always perpetrated by men. On the other hand, the verse "I'm not that hot new chick.." sounds more like the infidelity interpretation. This is ceratinly Cat Power's most aggressive song, and is a intersting change in style.

submissions
Cat Power – The Greatest Lyrics 17 years ago
The song speaks to the failed ambition inside all of us. When we accept that our dreams and gaols and ambitions will never be acheived. Chan's submission to fate and circumstance is poignant. Life humbles all of us at some point or another.

Annie – The Wedding Lyrics 17 years ago
'The Wedding" reads as a sort of little girl's fantasy of falling in love and getting married. Annie allows this almost trite sentiment to be rather dark and sexy. The lyrics may not reflect this, but her delivary of them, with her whispered proposal to herself, is bold and sexy. The beat, which samples The Knack's "My Sharona" and adds a lot of synth and handclaps is really infectious. At Seven and a half minutes long, it's Annie's opus.

submissions
Annie – Heartbeat Lyrics 17 years ago
This simplicity of this song is fascinating. At first ti's just a pop song with trite 'heart' metaphors. Once you really listen to it and get inside the song you realize it's about a lot more. It describes that dream of any partygoer, or perhaps anyone in life, to find that perfect stranger, and have one perfect night. She feels the shame, the reluctance, but just fully embraces the spontaneity of life. That's all that anyone can ask for, to forget their life for one perfect night.

Bloc Party – Banquet Lyrics 18 years ago
This song changed my life. "Banquet" is so overwhelmingly infectious, sexy, and it really lingers with you. Bloc Party is an amazingly awesome band, and I cannot believe I hadn't listened to them until now. Surprisingly their other songs are strong too. I love how "Banquet" is so powerful yet catchy, and is definitely about breaking up with some one who still sets you on fire. It burns, like this song.

Metric – Monster Hospital Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe the song is about one being held agianst their will, as Emily Haines says that she is being held tight, and fighting a losing war. I love the darkness of the song, which is so well complimeted by the stunning video. Emily Haines intense delivery of the lyrics and the insane clash of the guitars creates a really dark and powerful image. It is truly a awe-inspiring song.
PS: The MSTRKRFT remix is phenomenal, giving it an underground disco treatment that actually works.
