Spoon – Written in Reverse Lyrics 13 years ago
First, here's a powerful song...partly 'cause it's ambiguous. It's a cliched interpretation but, it's hard not to see it as about the end of a relationship "hearse", light bulb going off and on. He's confused by the death of what he thought was a sure thing; betrayed 'cause he was left for another guy

the third verse and the choruses seem to hint at the idea of crusades/driving people out of their land.

Sondre Lerche – Modern Nature Lyrics 15 years ago
I take it as two people discovering each other. They know they're not perfect, they're not looking for perfect people and now they're ok with that. I take "Forget all your technicolour dreams" as saying "forget about movie-star couples", we're real, we're natural. "Being straight" is being honest and forward.

good point, supposablethumbs. I hadn't thought of that but it makes perfect sense. You wait to grow up, you wait for what you want, but just be patient.

The Velvet Underground – Oh! Sweet Nuthin Lyrics 18 years ago
I found out a very weird coincidence/inspiration: in Philip K. Dick's book, "Flow my Tears, the Policeman said", the main character is Jason Taverner, a singer. His biggest hit is a song by the same name. The book was published in 1975, by the way.

Madeleine Peyroux – J'Ai Deux Amours Lyrics 18 years ago
This is about loving her country, the US, but also loving Paris. It's also a play on words, like have two loves (people). Like another of her French songs, La Vie en Rose, beautiful!

Portastatic – Little Fern Lyrics 18 years ago
this is easily my favorite off Bright Ideas, the guitar solos rock and the lyrics are great. anybody know what it's supposed to mean? i always thought that it was a lovingly complementary song, but i read harder into the lyrics and it seems to be saying "shoo! get away from me...its for your own good" and then he changes his mind. either way, its beautiful

Daniel Johnston – Speeding Motorcycle Lyrics 18 years ago
great lyrics. the Yo la Tengo cover is pretty great, as it is more "polished" than Johnston's version, but retains his lyrics, in my opinion his greatest asset.
"We can do a lot of tricks
We don't have to break our necks
To get our kicks" i like that part

Daniel Johnston – Some Things Last a Long Time Lyrics 18 years ago
great song, sad and sentimental. check out the Built to Spill cover on The Normal Years, it captures the same feeling with added anguish (and electric guitars), and Doug Martsch does a great job singing this one.

great song. so carefree. This is just about the joy of life and making music. Easily the catchiest I've ever heard. Good luck getting it out of your head after a listen.

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
to clarify the "kicked it in the sun" i read somewhere that early in their career, a few tapes from a recording session were left in the car. the tapes melted and they had to rerecord the entire album. this seems to have irritated everyone, look back through other lyrics: most of the time the songs with allusions to the sun have a sort of angry tone.
in this song, i think "kicked it in the sun" refers to someone disregarding what someone says or does. like leaving mix tapes in the car, it obviously doesn't seem too important to them.

Built to Spill – Carry the Zero Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree with iani, i think the second verse it all about this "mask" people put on when they're uncomfortable about themselves. Then they overcompensate. Like for example: many middle aged women tan in tanning beds or overuse makeup because they want to stay "young" looking. But in the process they lost the beauty they once had. like from "Took it with you when you moved and got it broke". The person the speaker is talking about has changed radically from what they originally believed, and he's trying to show them that. No one can help because They're so close to having a breakdown "And now we can't even touch it
Afraid it'll fall apart ".

In all i think its about being constant in what you believe in and honest. oh and it rocks very much. great intro, guitar solo, everything. im glad the band is getting the recognition they deserve, but i think they still probably think pretty humbly of themselves. buy their cds!

Built to Spill – Still Flat Lyrics 18 years ago
the religon thing makes sense, but to me its about the how stubborn everyone is. people see and believe whatever is inside of them, whatever they've always seen and believed. "it's gonna take some dedication" to change that. I recently read orwell's 1984 and its a bit like that: every person has their own reality and its just as real to everyone of them. in the book it takes some serious psycological and physical torture to change what he believes. The mind can overcome senses so that "no matter how round it feels it's still flat". anyway, its one of the better, more polished songs off the normal years. I'd like to see if Bts ever uses any other brass instruments in the future (trombone in this one, i read that that part was originally played by guitar but Netson decided to switch it up a little)

Halo Benders – Bombshelter Pt. 1 Lyrics 18 years ago
It's a pretty catchy tune, I like the catchy rhythms and simple pop guitar lines. As for the lyrics, they're pretty obviously about the cold war/communism hysteria in the 50's but i think its just as applicable now, 10 years after it was written. People waste their time being cautious and forget to live a little (the unpopularity of flying after 9/11 & anti-arab sentiments) afterwards, they look back on it and see how stupid they were and all the time they wasted.
