Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics
|
I'm really amazed at how salient this religious aspect is within this song. It's quite cool!! and refreshing and unexpected, when so much other stuff out there is just lust and cheapness. But this is Regina!!
I agree with LovePeaceRachel and will say I definetley thinks this song is a representation of how people mock and laugh at God, taking him and the afterlife as a joke and non existent. Until something wrong happens and we realise that we're all really so vulnerable and affected by everything.
Pretty simple reading but I reckon it's great Regina's written a song on it.
So excited for Far!!

Emiliana Torrini – Beggar's Prayer Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
She's pregnant - "I've got a bottle of your blood inside me". It's within the baby she carries. I think the husband has died, and Chamoses I agree on the concept of her blaming God. And that leaves her mother in the role of comforting her and helping her... to give her hope to survive.
Now she's left whispering the beggar's prayer to be able to survive and care for her child. |

Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
Wow, I'm suprised people are shocked this song was chosen. I just read it was included for the soundtrack and am thrilled as Ive loved i&w for quite awhile... anyhow, I think this was a wonderful choice. Not only is the mood and beauty so prominent but I think there are some links you can draw to vampires (and yes, I agree its about Politics! Just saying if you want to see the links they are there, like most things).
eg. "Have I found you? Flightless bird" immediatley reminded me Edward Cullen's whole flying without wings thing... Plus the repetition of found/lost being a prominent phrase throughout "i don't want to lose you...".
And yes, I know it wasn't written with any thought at all for its presentation in Twilight but frankly I can't wait to be sitting in the cinema and here this come on, not only for the movie and the beautiful music but for the fact that this song, to some degree reflects the whole emotional beauty and torment to the book/film.
Plus, it may get some more people into Iron and Wine |

Kate Miller-Heidke – Out and In Lyrics

I can't believe some of her other songs have more comments than this one... sigh... I love it. tis nice to sing along to too!
Very pretty, but sounds a bit like she's getting shadowed, left behind by the character he is, whilst she is madly in love with him. and so, she will stand, paused and keep breathing and screaming into his ear her feelings to no success...
Just my thoughts though |

Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I'm sayign definetley Christian... Also, I think it's from the Holy Spirit's perspective more than specifically God's or Jesus' (ahh! confusing trinity stuff! ahh well. I trust it's real and works...).
The reason I say this is especially the stanza of
"When you wear your clothes
I wear them too
I wear your shoes
And your jacket too"
So... as God gave His Holy Spirit to us, as Christians, it means that He's given a part of Himself to us. Which is an awesome thought!
Yeah, it's given me some thought... just that He has/does walk in my shoes, not only as He was a man but that He is also part of me now.
Go Sufjan!
Oh, and there's an awesome song out by Xn called the same as this... its very very chill. I think they've picked the base lines up from the opening of the song and extended them. It really grew on me and is a brilliant late night song.. just if you're interested |

Regina Spektor – Woolen Gloves Lyrics
|
Yay! Just listening to this for the first time... I reckon its using the lack of dexterity we feel when we're wearing gloves to relate that back to life, and that desire to go somewhere warm where she'll have an 'ideal' life. But instead she stays where its cold, where she makes mistakes, misshandles things and needs forgiveness. Anyway, they're just my thoughts... New Regina! Yay!! Wonderful day!! |

Laura Marling – Tap At My Window Lyrics
|
Found this in an interview with Marling, with the Telegraph.. she's talking on this song...
"I had to sit my parents down and play that to them and say 'Guys, don't worry, I don't hate you'," she laughs. "That song is based on the Philip Larkin line, 'They fuck you up, your mum and dad'. I bet everyone in the world thinks like that. In fact, my parents were bloody good to me, picking me up from the station at one o'clock in the morning when I was coming back from a gig. Obviously they weren't too pleased about me dropping out of school, but it was just the way things were moving." |

Coldplay – Ladder to the Sun Lyrics

Tis interesting that this beautiful imagery of being a ladder to the sun infers that they're going to burn you to a crisp.
I have no doubt its said in a loving way, but yeah, just a thought.
When he's saying "I had it all and I risked it all".... could that be inferring he risked everything good he already had (friendship or such that he had with this woman) to further their relationship? That he risked that pain in being burnt by soemthing so bright and wonderful, and also losing their friendship/what they had before? |

Such a beautiful, bittersweet song... |

The Weepies – Hideaway Lyrics
|
I got this interview from a blog site... tis an interview between Steve and Deb (the married couple that make up the Weepies) and their comments on their song Hideaway...
~
We had been listening to a lot of old blues songs, where the guitar playing often plays the main melody along with the singer. A lot of acoustic guitar playing is simply chords, over which the melody is sung; we wanted to do that thing where the guitar plays the same notes as the singer sings, so they're both doing it at the same time. The lyrics came out of our experiences of needing some time to hide!
The recording was a real collaboration. We recorded the acoustic guitar and Deb's lead vocal first at home in our living room. Frank Lenz came up with a classic rhythm pattern that worked, and then we sent that whole track via email to bassist Whynot Jansveld in NYC (we were in LA). Whynot came up with a really fun bottom end, and sent it back to Meg Toohey in LA. Meg's electric guitar is the groovy "chunk-a-chunk" you hear that's WAY back off the beat, almost in the previous bar every time. Then we took all those pieces, added those 60's harmonies and some organ to fill it out. It was the last track to make it onto the record. |

Menomena – Gay A Lyrics
|
found this interview on You ain't no Picasso.... I think it answers the question of what this song is all about....
~
Now, just a fan sort of question here. I really love “Gay A” off the “Wet and Rusting” EP and was wondering if there’s any connection between it and Radiohead’s “Kid A.”
[Laughs] No. There’s no meaning in relation to “Kid A.” It has no personal meaning to any of us in the band. A friend of mine went to one of those… like, places where they didn’t want to be gay any more.
Like a religious camp?
Yeah. Like one of those where they didn’t want to be a part of the gay lifestyle any more. It’s based on my misconception about what that was. I was under the assumption that you go to these places to not be gay any more, but that’s totally not what it is. It’s just for people who don’t want to be in the gay lifestyle. You can’t really can’t stop being gay. But the point isn’t to rid you of your gayness, but just to help you if you don’t want to be a part of that lifestyle. |

Jack Johnson – Sleep Through the Static Lyrics

I believe this song is talking of the complacency and violence of our society. The repetition of the line "we went beyond where we should have gone" seems to reinforce this.
Great song by the wonderful Jack. Doesn't seem as catchy as some of his earlier works, but again lyrically wonderful and sweet as ever. Can't wait for the 5th of Febuary! |

hmm... yeah. take no notice of all that new Judas stuff. Its all rot and if you actually look at it from a scientific perspective is total garbage. Why are people so willing to believe a new book claiming to be old disproving the gospel, yet so against believing that which was actually written then and is valid?
Great song. Menomena is a magical and very clever band. Mmmm, I think I'm more inclined to agree with Wrat than anything else personally.... |

hear hear farfaraway. Also, I really agree with the irony and sarcasm in this song. It reminds me of the seperations we put between ourselves and the horror out there. Here we stand... celebrating the new year... insulated from what goes on due to our leaders, our inaction and our ignornance yet we can still celebrate the blessings we have. Which isn't altogether a bad thing. |

i disagree. I reckon that he (being her husband) is on drugs. he's 8 miles high and she reckons that she must leave, despite the fact that she will always love him. She pleads with him to change and threatens to leave and she eventually does, vowing to never love another. What I don't get though, is why she would kiss her son good bye, as well as her husband before she leaves... would she leave her son to that kind of life? Also, in the live version i have she says "good bye my lover, good bye my son" not "good night..". Anyway, thats just the idea I'd always got from the song!
Ohh, and I love the heartbeat and its a great song to sing by yourself! Go Regina! |
